Matt, you are my ukulele guru ! Love when you cover these topics and so inspiring when you share the experiences from your own personal journey. I've been playing ukulele for about five years now. Three things I thought I'd never be able to do.... 1. Strumming and singing together. 2. Actually singing in front of an audience. (done it 8 times now) 3. Learning a few jazz songs with their challenging, but beautiful sounding chords.

I enjoyed this video so much ! I can relate in so many things, lol. I picked the uke at 55+ and NEVER thought I could achieve my dream music at all (I don't read music, just work on tabs and with videos). I mainly picked the uke to accompany myself singing and improvising, which I could do pretty quickly, with just a few chords (ukes are so great for that !). But the further I went on, the more I was excited about the many things I could do with a ukulele. I am an ancient music lover (medieval, renaissance, baroque) and when I discovered the campanella style, I was totally blown away. I HAD TO play like this !! And now, only 3 years later, I can already play a few easy ancient music pieces, and I am so immensely grateful the ukulele opened this door to me ! Patience is the key. Learn step by step. When I absolutely want to play something, I try to divide it in small pieces, and reduce it to its main lines. And with time, I add complexity. I have been staying on one music piece for 1 or 2 years before I could entirely play it. Of course, I also enjoyed playing easier stuff in the same time, not to be discouraged. I just kept coming back to my most beloved "unachievable" songs until I could play them. For some reason, it happens that we reach a plateau and we are stuck for a long time with no improvement. And all of a sudden, "something has secretely matured in the background" and we can overcome a difficulty, and our whole technique is improved almost magically from one day to another ! In my case, what totally surprised me was the fact that my fingering literally "roots itself in my brain" when I sleep : I learn a new tab line in the evening, try to place my fingers, find it terrible, and go to bed. The next day, it is as if my brain had built the connexions in my sleep, and my fingers find their way to the strings, lol. Thanks for your great videos that encourage us to go on, and your sweet personality and lovely smiling eyes ! 😊

Thank you so very much - I am starting to play the ukelele at 87 and your breaking the task up into manageable bits helps me so much. I love your classes.

You had me at "this [waves hand up and down over uke strings] is a consistent relationship." I have always appreciated teachers who think like that. Students (especially very intelligent nerds) get hung up on things, and good teachers see exactly where that is, and point out the datum that makes the hang-up melt away. Rhythm has not been my hang-up, but I have seen so many people try to teach rhythm without getting basic enough. They are skipping steps and aren't imagining how to go basic enough to turn the light bulbs on. You obviously have this licked.

LOL at that ending! Those silly side comments and editing are the best! 😂 This is such a lovely video, man. Don't want to go too over the top but..........I cried. Just the reminder that we each have our own journey and each person is unique in their journey is something that's easy to forget and very touching to remember. This had the same effect that Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood's (grammar fail) endearing and pure messages of encouragement have on me. That's why I also cry if I watch Mr. Rogers. 😂 Okay I won't say anything else about this, but this really just hit me and meant so much to me right now. Thank you! 😊

Loved your comen5s om S U C K A G E . . . the lovely truth of musical mistakage is that it just disappears. Or at least disappears in disappations, but what the heck, mergers of Black Holes are barely detected across the vastness. So here we are, at a distance from our immediate mistakes. No teven mistakes, just Noise. And NOISE is only unwanted sound, and unwanted sound is usually unappreciated experience. It is all all harmonized in the Huge Emptyness of the present monumental momentum Moment .
