A tip I learned in speech therapy school: if you want to break a child from their pacifier, but don’t want to be the “bad guy”, just start by poking a hole in it when they aren’t looking. Then, every day make the hole bigger or cut just a little more off. That way they say to themselves, “ this just isn’t doing it for me anymore!” Then they spit it out and you aren’t the “bad guy” taking it away!

My son didn’t take pacifiers and doesn’t take them now (he just turned 6 months). He also refused to be swaddled at all. It was so frustrating to see my friends’ babies (couple weeks difference with mine) sleep so well in their sleep sacks while mine was fighting to get out of it. I still feed him to sleep. Honestly, I thought it was something to be ashamed of, but well… it works for both of us. He will never be this small again

Hey! I know this comment is super old, I hope you and your bub are doing well! I have an 8 month old and I still feed him to sleep every single night + day. When did your little one stop feeding to sleep? And was it hard to stop the habit? 😊

Every kid is different. I don't think there's any kind of general truth that would apply to them all. Ours never slept in a swaddle either, she just hated it. But she slept well enough without it. If I learned anything during those three years I've been raising my daughter, it's that I should take advice as a tip. Try it out, it might work or it might not. Observation and adapting to my kid's needs are my best friends here. :)

@9393farah My daughter was the same. And unfortunately once we stopped breastfeeding she was sucking her thumb. It was OK at the beginning, we kind of allowed her to do it but later on it bacame an issue. It took us ages to get rid of this habit and cost us all (her, me and my husband) a lot of stress. She is 7 now and still sometimes sucks her thumb unconsciously when sleeping in the morning... like it is deeply programmed in her sleeping habit. I have another baby now and... he refused to take a pacifier so I breastfeed him to sleep. Looks like I am doing the same mistake but I hope that once we switch from breastfeeding to bottle we will find a way to calm him down and definitely we will keep his thumb far away from his mouth.

I still feed my 16 month old to sleep to be honest. I've weaned him off of milk during daytime, but he is currently in a phase where he wants to be fed to sleep again, I think it will just pass naturally with some time.

I lasted two weeks with new born twins until I gave in and bought them. I was trying to avoid it as I know my parents kept them until we started school. I didn’t want them to be dependent on them. But it helps so much with self soothing and sleeping when they are babies.

Halo ftw. Hands down the best swaddles, both of my babies have slept so much better with Halo than any other swaddle. Also, on pacis, we just don’t offer the pacifier unless baby is genuinely wanting it. I’ve had family members try to put the paci in baby’s mouth when he isn’t cranky, or even try to put it back in his mouth if he drops it while sleeping. If he’s content, we don’t try and force it on him. We did the same with our oldest and he decided he was over the paci at about 4 months old, so fingers crossed it all works out the same this time around.

Glad to know that I should stop fighting the catnaps with my 4 month old. I feel so much pressure to have him nap longer and I spend too much time trying to resettle him. Good to know that this would change when he is a bit older!

Every child is different too. I have 2. Neither would take a pacifier. I offered many kinds at many times to them. Neither had anything to do with them. My first swaddled and fell asleep well but woke up a lot in the night. Didn't stop until i sleep trained him at six months. My second only falls asleep to nursing and is tougher to swaddle, but slept 6+ hours by 2 months. Just have to go with the flow i think

how do you train them?
@Lillireify
@Lillireify 9 күн бұрын
@@malamikica9591in a nutshell: you take their sleep crutch away (pacifier, boob, rocking to sleep etc), lay them down in the crib and wait for them to figure out how to fall asleep without it. Then depending on your preference you either sit with the baby, pat them & sing, leave them and occasionally check them or just leave them alone until they fall asleep on their own. :)

Funny enough, my son doesn’t care for swaddling or pacifiers. What saved me with napping is contact naps!! He LOVED them until we made the final transition for all sleep to take place in his room when we’re home. I loved them too ): sleep “training” was also a life saver- we did exclusively nights and a month later incorporated the naps. We started at a little after 6mo of age.

Thank you for these tips! These will definitely come in handy. I found the nap segment interesting because I just read a neurology study showing about a 20 minute nap can give you plenty of energy because you haven’t yet entered REM sleep and about a 1:30 hour nap also has the same benefits because you’ve completed a REM cycle. While this was a study on helping to prevent Alzheimer’s, it does help to make some sense as to why the 20 min and 1:30 hour naps are so helpful to new borns.

My husband said to me "your the only one I know that don't give baby a pacifier" 🤣 My daughter has always taken cat naps and I had no problem with it. I always do what my baby wants. I always go with the flow so I don't stress myself. Now my baby is 7 months and her sleeping patterns changes almost every 2 days. I just go with it. Whenever she taking a nap I go down with her. I leave all the house work alone unless I am not tired. I don't stress myself over anything when comes to my baby. Stress is not good for your health.

Another round of excellent advice, thank you, Emma :) When you mentioned transferring the baby from hands to the crib, reminded me to share my best practice - we use pillows for babies (at least this is what we call them in Croatia) :) There are different models, some are softer, and some are firm (more firm the part where the baby's back & head are). So this is perfect for keeping her in arms while breastfeeding or when daddy is putting her to sleep :) And then is so easy to transfer her to her bed, without making her startle.😇

First time mom here and good to know I haven't made these mistakes. I've swaddled her since her first days in the hospital and I quickly use a pacifier especially during a diaper change when she gets fussy. It stops her from kicking. I'm not sure about naps though for the most part we just feed her and then put her to sleep.

Thanks for the video! My second baby is due in Jan, this time I'll still breastfeed but will also not put too much pressure on myself, I'll go with the flow and see what works. If the supply keeps being low even when pumping, I'll supplement as needed rather than feeling miserable and guilty.

Congratulations on your pregnancy. ❤️ I hope you are feeling well and not too tired with another child to chase around! Great advice to not put too much pressure on yourself! Breastfeeding can be difficult and we can make ourselves feel miserable if we feel we are not doing it "right". Remember to link in with a lactation consultant if your feel that would be helpful and always be kind to yourself.💕

I tried using pacifier with my child, he is nearly 5 months old and all the attempts were futile. He just spits it out. Tried various designs. Still no luck. Just gave up. It's okay though, I just built my day schedule around his sleep: several 30-40 minutes sessions of sleep while eating during the day, longer sleep in the evening and even more sleep during the night. So I get to read, answer emails etc during the short naps, work on my laptop and prepare food in the evening. Pretty neat and tiresome but works for me

I have four young children. My oldest is 7. My youngest is 5 months old. All of them did well with swaddling but my youngest did not like the swaddle much so I let her sleep (well) on her tummy. It makes her most happy. I didn't allow anything else in the crib. She was absolutely fine. My others did love their swaddle thingies though. Also, all of my children stopped using their pacifiers (other than car rides) after 6months of age. They didn't really care about it so I was glad to eliminate it.

I used a dummy with my first purely out of desperation. I was an isolated first time mum, completely overwhelmed. I never wanted to use them at all for many reasons including the ones you listed. we pulled it promptly at 6 months and it is one of my biggest regrets/ lessons as a mum. For me the benefits do not outweigh the drawbacks, though it's different for every family! For some families its an amazing tool, for us it caused more problems than it fixed. Due with #2 shortly and will not be using one again. we co-sleep and babywear and that is honestly just as good for soothing, if not better!

I wish my babies would have taken a pacifier. My first two spat out the pacifier from day 1 and my third only used one for about 2 months. Those were a glorious 2 months. Luckily he discovered his thumb a month later and has been happy with it since

My baby is 15 months now, she never liked any pacifier, any bottle, nor any swaddling ever. Never sucked her fingers either haha. She would spit the pacifier out instantly no matter what we tried, and I guess a part of me was glad because I learned at the time that it can lead to dental problems and it can be hard to wean them off of it, so wasn't going to look forward to that if she'd been okay with it. The "downside" to that is my breast ended up being her pacifier instead, which isn't a bad thing as it's extremely beneficial for babies to soothe at the breast whenever they need to (and good for mama too), so I also felt it was my job as her mama to do it for her whenever she needed me anyway, and it felt right, too. Feed and soothe on demand is what they teach here in New Zealand, and I love it because it's how it should be and it's just natural and pure love. ❤️ It was impossible to swaddle my daughter, she disliked any kind of swaddling or being held down by anything (including car seats, so rides in the car were impossible). When I pumped to keep my milk supply up, I tried giving that milk to her in a bottle but she wouldn't have it, so I ended up not using the milk I pumped (I didn't pump to use the milk as I mentioned, but felt like a waste half the time). I saw a comment on this video from someone who said that they wished they'd pumped early on on day 3 or so, and I absolutely agree, you should. My milk was a bit late when I had my daughter (only had a tiny amount come through) and I had to use donor milk at the hospital until it did come through a few days later (which broke my heart), and they let me use the hospital pump while I was there to help my body get started on the milk production and it really helped. Thing is, you have to feed your baby on demand even if you pump, and then just feed her what you've pumped every now and then. It is absolutely, irrefutably beneficial for the baby to be close to you at the chest, at the very least the first few months. It keeps baby warm as the mother's chest is programmed to be a few degrees warmer than usual solely to keep the baby warm, and it relaxes and destresses and soothes the baby as oxytocin is released for both baby and mother and this is very, very good for the baby's development. So if you're planning on not even offering the baby your breast at all, please reconsider, all the baby wants is to be at your chest and be close to you, you are your baby's safe haven, the whole world and everyone in it is scary and unfamiliar except for you, their mama who is all they have known for 9 months. ❤️ I never liked freezing milk, although having emergency milk isn't a bad thing. The reason I never liked it is that women are designed as such that the antibodies in the milk change based on mamas and baby's health and needs that same day, which is so remarkable and humbling and amazing, so that's extremely beneficial, and you won't reap those benefits at all with frozen milk from a completely different day. Just food for thought for anyone who's interested or considering it. I would pump as well as feed though, at least initially as I did, as it does help keep up milk supply so you don't have to worry about having enough milk (feed baby, wait an hour, pump, then an hour later you have enough new milk in your breast for your newborn to drink from). Also eat oatmeal every morning and/or incorporate oats into your daily diet, make cookies or smoothies or protein bars/balls with oats, they help A LOT with milk supply. Pineapple helped me with milk supply too. Make sure baby keeps sucking from the same breast for a while (30-40 min) before switching to the other because if you don't baby won't get the hindmilk which is the fatty milk that has all the important nutrients; the baby gets mostly watery milk when they first start sucking and only after sucking for a while does the baby get the hindmilk. One thing I wish I'd done differently is getting a baby carrier to wear the baby from the get go instead of carrying my daughter around in my arms for hours on end. Because I carried her in my arms directly for so long everyday I developed "mommy's wrist" and dealt with the pain for months. This also lead to me bedsharing with my daughter for longer than I needed and now she has a sleep association, which is once or twice a night she still wakes up and wants the breast to fall back asleep, and we still bedshare. Loud white noise helps newborns settle and sleep as the noise mimics the sounds inside of mamas body when the baby was a foetus - they say white noise as loud as a vacuum cleaner is about the right volume as that's how loud it is for baby in your belly when pregnant. Learned that as I went and eventually bought a Bluetooth speaker and connected it to a spare phone I had and got the "Atmosphere" app and played constant rain noise for my baby (highly recommend that app btw, free). I also got a portable white noise machine for on the go, really helped. Lots of tips really but those are a few, hope they can help someone out there! 😊

All terrific tips! I'm so glad we already had the baby carrier at home from our firstborn (who we only carried on it when outside, strangely, it never occurred to me to use it inside the house doing chores back then. Oops) because second baby was so clingy and desperate for attention as I had to now split my attention between two kids who needed me. She definitely was a koala just hanging on me daily and I got to take care of our toddler at the same time. Now it's more difficult as youngest is walking and wants to be semi independent but in her mind i'm not allowed to have her big sister on my lap, the wail of betrayal and despair she demonstrates as soon as I even hug our eldest is - - something else. But up until she started walking, she was very content in the baby carrier. Would definitely recommend baby wearing.

@@Lifeisbutanillusion aww, I definitely understand. We were going back and forth on deciding whether to grow our family or not as well. I finally made up my mind by thinking about my childhood (I was an only child until my stepbrother was born when I was already 15 years old so alone all my childhood) vs my partners childhood (who is an older brother and their uncle was in the mix as well a lot, their uncle is only a few years older than my partner so three young ones growing up together) - I thought that maybe growing up with a sibling would be better? I mean yeah, there'll be fights and split attention but hopefully they'll grow to have each other's backs and have a great bond, too. The newborn phase is quite boring for the toddler, though, as we adults were excited about our eldest having someone to play with but then baby sis arrives and it takes her like 9 months to even move on her own, so no proper playing with the toddler, like we exclaimed... Youngest is learning so much from big sis, she practically sprints or gallops to our eldest, learned skills faster like crawling and walking and now a sprint-ish fast walk. Hard to keep up with the both of them and indeed, the look and wail of betrayal when our youngest wants to be the one held and cuddled by me. But I guess it takes time. Toddler is pretty excited that baby sister understands a bit of hide and seek now and can come seek when big sis runs somewhere. Sharing toys is hard, some days toddler is very gentle and sharing and guides baby but mostly it's "no! don't touch!" and toddler wants to have what baby has in her hands, to take even baby toys away. It's a process for sure. But some parts are easier: like the baby fell into our toddler's day and night rhythm pretty well after the first 3 months -ish. Toddler likes to do night routine and fall asleep with dad, I get to put baby to sleep. Definitely less time to even catch up with my partner about his day, though. Oh boy and intimacy, what's that... ? But we make do and try our best to remember us as well in the mix of it all. This is temporary and it'll be a blink and they're already starting school. Next blink, they're moving out. Sorry this turned into a novel, length-wise. I advise anyone thinking about having a second baby to look up other's experiences, too, here on youtube. Video searches for "what I wish I knew before having a second child" or something similar was what I watched as well. All the best to you!

My son never wanted a pacifier, so we never used one and its ok, even though there might be some disadvantages. Swaddling he also hated. Also, every child is different, and if some things you didn’t do with your daughter, it does not mean it would have been different or better.

I gave my baby a pacifier the very first night we went home (something I wouldn't do again but I didn't know better) and by about 11 months he had grown tired of the thing and refused to take it. ^^ Let's see if his younger sibling is going to be just as easily weaned off a pacifier. (I doubt it, I think I just got lucky the first time^^).

Hello:) my little Mary is 4 month old. She is not convinced to the pacifier, she is removing it after some time. I realized that she loves to suck her fingers and I was told that it is normal and even beneficial while she is producing sounds during this activity. But I am a bit concerned when she sucks only the thumb without vocalisations, she sucks mainly right thumb and it happens when she wants to sooth herself. I offered her a pacifier instead a thumb, but she prefers thumb.. sometimes breast helps, Mary eats quite often, she is only breastfeed. I will be thankful for bit of advice. I find your channel very profitable for not experienced parents as I am. Greetings from Poland and have a lovely day:)

I do not regret not using a pacifier, but I wish I would have used a baby carrier much earlier and often. And I wish I started using the haakaa pump as soon as my milk came in, because my son wasn't strong enough to remove milk efficiently. Most of the time when he was fussy he was actually just hungry...

I know a toddler who stopped using the pacifier at 3 years of age and now, being pregnant, I am scared my little one won’t want to give up a pacifier untill that age. So me and my husband want to try not to give baby a pacifier…but seeing this video makes me reconsider this. Also, swaddling is not such a popular choice in my country. They descourage swadlling…but I guess those types of swadles where the baby’s feet aren’t constricted much are pretty safe?…

Hi! Firstly congratulations on your pregnancy! In regards to using the pacifier, do whatever you feel comfortable with and your baby is willing to do. Some babies just don't accept pacifiers and that is also completely ok. In regards to your concern about using a pacifier, I just recommend stopping the pacifier at 6 months. This way it's impact on sleep would be limited and the risks are extremely low. In regards to swaddling. It is recommended that if you are swaddling, then you should make sure the baby can adopt the "M" position with their legs. This is the healthy hip position. If they can do this then swaddling is fine. And it is great for their sleep too!

I think temperament is a lot too. My daughter didn’t take a pacifier but did just fine without it. She would suck her hands and dropped that at 10 months and sleeps just fine now. 3 yo. My son, wouldn’t take a pacifier but definitely needed one. He’s a bit of a fussy baby. Needing to be carried and held close. Needs to nurse to sleep. I’m sure if I hardcore “sleep trained” that would be different but becuz he is so different and needs me, it’s becuz he needs me. My daughter was very independent early on and did just fine with a little bit of rocking and put down.

I've read that you should stop swaddling when baby is able to roll over. Baby will need their arms to help them breathe in the case that they roll over. A swaddle at that point would be dangerous.

Oh no! Now I wish I had used a pacifier for my bub, who is now 4.5 months old. She is such a sucky little bub but can't get used to sucking on her thumb or fingers - she gags on them, and that upsets her. I tried (feebly) a couple of times with a dummy, but again, she gagged, or it just dropped out of her mouth. I, too, was worried about dependence, so I didn't persist, but I really wish I had given her something soothing as she too hates the car and can become quite hysterical. Too late to try again at 4 months, I am guessing??
