Man, Mark Philips is such a great person. He has acomplished so much and yet he is still a man, which means that just like everyone else, he will eventually pass away... this makes me so sad, if i could give him all the years that i have left, i 100% would. He is not only a martial arts instructor that manages to make Wing Chun look good, he is more than what we all know. Bless you, we all love you

I feel like the only reason he doesn't get more views is because this guy wants us to actually be able to defend ourselves in a real fight and not just a tournament where everything is comfy and cozy as opposed to a real scenario where it it ugly and you could die. If people wanted to actually learn something valuable they would watch this guy instead of all that other nonsense, but people want to be lied to, they like to think that their opponent will just conveniently stand there and wait for them to finish their unnecessarily complex and fancy looking moves. If only people could appreciate what they need more than what they want, life isn't a fairytale, if only more people were aware of this, then people like this guy would get the recognition they truly deserve. It's always a shame seeing people flock to mediocre glittery content, glitter will always sparkle more than a raw diamond, this guy is a diamond.

You need to learn to think for yourself. Is this really outstanding? What if he has other pals waiting to kick the sh*t out if you from all angles? Is dropping to the floor really a good idea? He could have kept it simple by just using a free hand to strike the groin, finger jab eyes, or stomp an available foot. Think for yourself!

This is where most people will panic, it can feel like your slowly going to be suffocated having been in the headlock before but it can actually be to your advantage if you get out the bad guys arms are away from you as you will end up behind him , the bad guy can still turn though or elbow you. Just try and avoid fights.

I like the realism in his work. Even in this vid. A lot of other self defense vids and instructions out there focus one a specific move or technique for a specific scenario. What if the scenario changes, and then you find yourself in trouble cause you havent practiced it like that. What I like here, he gives you a strategy that can be applied in several similar situations, so if the attacker varies from situation to situation, you can still apply the strategy to your advantage. Not just specifically trained moves that needs to change with every scenario. It makes 100% sense, and free your mind up to be more over all situationally aware. Good work, no, great work.

When I learned rear naked choke(RNC), of course I tried it on my friends and they on me. You mentioned face bar and offered some alternatives. If you are face barring it's because your RNC is blocked. I solved that, at least in play fights. To RNC you need to get to the neck. If you are face barring, what I learned is Core strength is way more powerful than Arm or Neck strength. If my right arm is trying to get the RNC and they duck their chin, we are at a stalemate. Here is how I overcome that. If I use my Core to overpower the neck muscles, my arm is around their chin and not the neck, use that face bar as a lever to pull their head back and immediately switch from a right handed RNC to a left handed RNC, snake the other arm in there as I lever their head back, exposing the neck. I've never seen anyone talk about this so I'm sharing with you guys. Summary, if you have a face bar, consider using you core body strength to create an opening where their neck is exposed, and switch hands quickly
@mattjack3983
@mattjack3983 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah thats actually a fairly common way to complete the rear naked choke. But if you are on their back, with both of your leg hooks in, and you have them in a face bar, its MUCH easier to pull their head back and snake your other arm in if you first stretch them out on their stomach. And the higher up on the face your arm is, the easier it is to pull the head back too. Once they are stretched out on their stomach, and you have the face bar kinda around the middle of the face, its really easy to pull the head back to sink a choke.
@Krebstar100
@Krebstar100 2 жыл бұрын
Wrist wiggle can help you get under the chin as well as using your non choking hand to dig under the nose with your wrist. My preference if we are training with strikes is to punch the side of the head a few times, as they reposition their head you can snake your choking arm in. Also keep in mind you don't actually need to be under the chin, while it is preferable, you can still cut of the carotid when they have the chin tucked, it's a harder finish but still doable.
@xmateosx
@xmateosx 2 жыл бұрын
@@mattjack3983 I'm so glad you said that, I thought it may be basic, I'm not a genius. I am coming at this as we are on the ground wrangling and I do not have my legs wrapped around you and you are not on your face. It's just continual motion, ready to take punches, but if I can get that neck, and make this foolishness stop while rolling around on the floor. Keep rolling, it's harder for their friends to kick your head, but if you keep it for a few dangerous seconds, may the odds ever be in your favor.
@mattjack3983
@mattjack3983 2 жыл бұрын
@@xmateosx one of the best pieces of advice I ever got in training: POSITION BEFORE SUBMISSION. Secure your position on his back, with the leg hooks in, and get him stretched out, and the choke becomes MUCH harder for him to fight off. Position is everything in grappling. Not just for chokes, either. ANY submissions you want to lock up, you want to first be in a secured position of dominance. Like, sitting on the chest in a full mount. Or on his back with a seat belt grip and legs hooks in. But if you are talking about a fight against multiple attackers, thats a whole different conversation.
@mattjack3983
@mattjack3983 2 жыл бұрын
@@Krebstar100 yes! Thats a good one! Using the non choking arm to dig under the nose. That will definitely get him to move his head. In a self defense situation on the streets tho, I'd be leaning more toward using strikes, or hard slaps. That will almost always create the head movement needed to sink a good choke, especially for a untrained street thug.

But he never pressure tests anything for real or wearing protective armour. Anyone looks good against a compliant dummy. BTW dropping to floor and grappling with opponent is a terrible idea. What if he has pals trying to kick or stab the cr*p out of you from every angle? It would be 100% more effective to just aim for primary targets such as groin, eyes, or stomp toes.
@3nertia

@@francdubois7832 Yes, judge him on the 5% you *do* see ... You're going to the ground 9 times outta 10, might as well practice being there. You're not supposed to *stay* there lmfao but how can you practice getting up from being tripped or taken down if you don't ever get on the ground, ever? Does it just hurt less when people miss the point? If he told you everything you need to know in *every* video, then every video would be 3 hours long. It's almost as if you don't actually *follow* this channel ... Clearly you've never actually tried to hit a pissed off man in the groin, eyes, or tried stomping someone's toes who's wearing boots lmfao Your advice is even less legitimate than the advice you're critiquing yet you fail to see the irony :D

@@3nertia Umm, if he was legit, he’d have his students really unload on him - even if, as I said, he was wearing armour. But he knows he’ll end up embarrassed so doesn’t go there. Secondly, if you’re ending up in the floor 9 times out of 10, then you have serious problems. There’s no time to lose mobility in a fight, esp when faced with multiple opponents. And you doubt that finger jabbing the eyes end a fight instantly? A man might have a granite chin, but the eyes are incredibly sensitive (same as groin). Without the eyes your opponent cannot see, and without his feet he cannot walk. Watch this YS marine instantly end fight with finger jab to eyes. Could show these against resistance from someone who's decent at throws? I used to love the "T position" from wing chun, but I've learned from judo that you need to really be sure you have postural control before T-ing up or you'll get thrown. 0:25 particularly caught my attention since I love to do harai goshi or uchi mata into a scarf hold/kesa gatame from Nick's position there. While the video cut to Sifu Mark trapping one of Nick's legs at 0:47, that's a tough move if you've just been thrown and put into a solid pin...

Glad I found this site. I have a question (and sorry if it's already been covered). If you see a guy attacking his wife or girlfriend in public, is it best to hit the guy as hard as you can? Calling police takes valuable time. Intervening verbally can result in your becoming the target of one or both. Of course, hitting anyone is a last resort, but letting a woman get hurt is not an option. People hitting dogs is also enough to make anyone feel murderous.
