3 Tips For Dyeing Leather Black

Back in the day when my wife had a bridal shop we used to dye the shoes. I could never get the shoes to a good deep black. I asked the shoe supplier and he told me the trick is to dye the shoes a dark green first then black. Problem solved. They came out perfect.

Once I started using nothing but hermann oak leather and fiebing’s products, most of my issues went away. I don’t do little sample pieces like I used to because the results are always so consistent I knew exactly what was going to happen. No more variables.

I used oil first and then pro dye navy blue. It became almost black. But I just rolled with it and claimed that was intentional 😅

But I have seen video where they put the oil on before the dye. I think the argument was that the dye would be more even. What is the difference? Is after best practise?

I guess I've always used pro dye and I use black a lot. Can't remember ever having issues. ??

Beginner question here, would you typically bevel those letters before, after, or not at all?

I’m pretty sure you want to bevel and finish the lettering or item first. Then dye. One leather is dyed I don’t believe you can really alter it or keep working on it

Do you always apply dyes with the leather completely dry?

I’d have a hard time saying “always” and “completely”. It’s probably safer to say “typically” and “mostly”. Haha. Occasionally I’ll start dyeing when my leather still has some moisture from tooling and it doesn’t seem to hurt things too bad. I’d recommend dry leather though.
