(30-06) Norma 170gr TipStrike Expansion Test

The most recent item off of Norma's catalog that we've got our hands on is the 170 grain TipStrike and today we'll be testing it from 100 to 500 yards through our Tika T3x Lite in 30-06!

I think two factors are at play here. A mild cartridge with a heavier round. High BC started at a moderate velocity so you stay in the ideal performance window from muzzle to 500 or so. I’m ready to see either the 175 7mm gameking or the 200 gr 308 gameking.

I can tell you I have shot some of my best groups ever with the Norma Bondstrike. I just purchased some Norma Tipstrike for my 7mm-08. It comes in 160 grain which I am excited about. Can't wait to give them a try at the range. I also can't wait to shoot a deer or elk with the Bondstrike should the opportunity present itself.

Really liked this video… I just found a great deal on these (tip strike and ordered a good amount) I’ve done some initial testing, both in 30-06 and 308. The 06 pulled a 3/4” group at 100 yards while the 308 was just over 1”. I’m still working the loads and playing with different powders but these look promising. One thing I was not impressed with was the variance in weight. Now I realize that these are for the most part a close range bullet. Out of four boxes (400 bullets) I had a spread ranging from 168.8 to 170.5. I weight sorted in groups of point three. This was my break down for 394 bullets. (168.8-169) x 25 (169.1-169.3) x 191 (169.4-169.6) x 97 (169.7-169.9) x 25 (170-170.2) x 5 170.5 x 1 I’d be curious to know if anyone else has experienced this much spread, again i understand it’s a hunting bullet but from my experience other brands don’t have this much of a spread.

I purchased some Norma bondstrike and tipstrike bullets during the great ammo depression of 2020-2021. I did find the tipstrike to be about 25% less expensive than the bondstrike. Norma does advertise the tipstrike as a deep penetrating bullet. It confused the heck out of me as I didn't understand how a non-bonded bullet could penetrate deeper than a bonded one. Your explanation does make sense though. The key to understanding how such a thing is possible is the differing metallurgy of the lead core. I didn't know until just now that a bonded bullet had to use a nearly pure lead core which of course is much softer than some lead alloys a metallurgist can create. So yeah it does make sense to me now. Thanks for sharing!

Ran Norma's non-bonded offerings in my T3x 7-08 and vintage Savage '06 last season. Accuracy was fine in both. Only took a deer with the '08. It did what it was made to do 👍 Haven't tried either of their bonded loadings yet.

Thanks, from Scotland. I use the 06 for red deer. We are however being pressured to change over to non lead bullets for hunting. I also use the 6.5x 55 and the 22-250 for hunting deer, but the 22 is only legal for hunting muntjac and Chinese water deer in England and roe deer in scotland. Roe deer The largest, but probably around the same size as your coyotes.

I just bought this ammo, I haven’t had a chance to shoot it yet. I’m impressed, I will probably use this for deer season . I thought it would come apart more than this. I would use this for whitetail and Bondstrike for elk.

Hard to beat the ol 06' at practical hunting distances. Love the vids. Im a bullet wierdo myself and love finding lead and copper mushrooms.

For 06 longer distances a 200 grain accubond .588 bc is hard to beat At 2650 mv. Stll has 1478 ft lbs of energy at 600 yds

I have an older Tikka in 7mm Rem Mag. The Norma 120 gr all copper Kalahari load, shot just under 1/2" three round groups. When I hit 120-150 lb deer with it, it sent a shock wave through them as they jumped. It seized them in mid air. Course, both shots were 40 yards 70 yard... so.... but anyway I love those loads but can't find them.

I wonder how the 120 gr. 284s from Barns would perform? If they work just as good, I keep the rig set up as is. But if not, I'm pulling the barrel and going w a 26" light varmint 7mm prc. I have a 2nd 7mm rem mag, so I'm not giving up on one of my ol' favorites. I have too much brass and dies to do that. Thanks for your videos!

Hey Guys Just found your channel, Keep up the videos... I was very impressed with your review of BOND STRIKE . It would seem as though this was your favorite bullet ? This is currently not offered in 7 mm ? Do you know if Norma plans on offering ammo or components in 7 mm in the future?

The Bondstrike is probably my favorite bonded bullet, I tend to shoot the Accubond a bit more though just because Nosler sells it in a wider range of grain weights. According to Norma's website they do mention a 165gr 7mm Bondstrike being available.
