In this list, number31: find reliable tutors such as this channel and actually heed the instruction. I did that ole, "looks easy, I dont need that advice". It showed too. I sold my art previously and thought moving to watercolor would be a breeze, half heartedly listening, and had a poor attitude. So my watercolors looked like finger paints compared to my former medium, pencil. I went back through these videos and listened and learned. I got humbled.

Although I am not a highly skilled watercolor artist, I am also not a beginner. Of all the tips, I think the two most important ones for me are learning to draw, which I already love to do, and using a limited pallet. I have bought many, many colors of Daniel Smith watercolors, and some others, just to really see what they look like, and want to to the limited pallet style of learning. Mostly, I do what I want. Also, your tip about not letting your watercolor brushes sit in the bucket of water is VERY important. Thanks very much for such a concise and useful video!

Michele you are the best teacher on the planet. I do look at others' videos & many of them are really good, e.g., Emma de, Hannah deWinton, Diane Antone and others, but coming back to your studio is like coming home. Your drawing course has me drawing things I never thought in a million years I could do & now I am just starting your Landscapes course. Thank you for all you do, for sharing your immense talent & for being encouraging, helpful & authentic.💕💕💕

As a raw beginner, Michele, I found all these tips invaluable. I’m intent on practicing my drawing as I’m ‘blind’ to certain things like, for example, angles. I have trouble working out whether an angle is going up or down. Especially with things like bay windows which stand out a little from the building or church buttresses. Very frustrating. Thank you for these tips. 👍😃

I love your content. I've been attempting watercolor for 2 years now. As you described, I was in a hurry to produce a painting and wish I had taken time to swatch the paints I already had and practice mixing on separate paper. I do that now and don't consider it a waste of time. Also, the importance of allowing the paper to dry between stages!! You address this more than a lot of instructors and I've found it critical. (Not that I don't push thru still when I should wait 😵💫). I will do more mixing on the paper - thank you for these tips and reminders!

Ahh a wonderful set of watercolor tips & tricks for beginners. I really appreciate tip #8 Storing similar colors together. I just realized that was an issue for me when deciding what color of the primaries for a recent painting. Also tip #24 not buying the huge sets of paints & brushes. Although recently I have been making some great texture brushes out of some of those old large sets of brushes now. Thanks for sharing this delightful video with us.

Michele, you always manage to pack so much info into the video! What I would find most welcome would be more advanced tips. Perhaps "Beyond Beginners!"? But I do realize you want to put out as much info to the audience that is most likely to watch, hence the glut of beginner videos on YT. So thrilled to see those subscriber numbers ever increasing, as no one could possibly image the years of experience, work and time that goes into even the shortest of videos.

7/10/23 the tip that I liked was the one about not adding black ink to your drawings when they are finished. I will try to have more contrast and not so many black ink lines. Thank you.

we also don't leave brushes in water if they have wood handles because it soaks up water and swells which may loosen ferrule and flake off paint in your painting

I definitely can't start a new painting unless I have wiped out my palette to start over. I see so many people using palettes that have old paint in them and they just keep remixing over that paint and I know some people can't stand the thought of wasting paint but I just can't do it. I have to have my colors pure and not mixed in with whatever colors I had been using in the previous project.

I know you are not supposed to stand your brush in your water. I use a tip I got from my first acrylic teacher. I put a chunk of plastic webbing in the clean and dirty water jars in the bottom. This is the stuff your vegetables and fruit come in when you buy a bag full. This not only gives your brush a bit of resistance to help clean it but it also is soft and keeps from hurting your bristles in the short run. I don’t leave my brushes in for very long but this does allow me a bit more time.

I do paint very small. I use the tiny brushes and paint very small details like eyelashes lol. I use many uses of brushes and I more often paint small than large. These are good foundational tips to be reminded of even as more of an expert. I crafted air dry clay into long snakes with dips and then painted 5 coats of acrylic, to hand make brush holders they are paired and I let the brush dry horizontal and flat ! They are great not sure why this isn’t a standard thing?

Very helpful tips. For #25 -- use a limited palette: the sample painting looks like the beginner lesson for some class--do you have a video on that one? It's what comes to mind when I think of Watercolor. Other tips that I hadn't heard before that I plan to try: #4 do the drawing as you go; #6 Use a large brush; #14 start with a clean palette, and #23 get a toothbrush. For #14--clean your palette--I've been leaving a lot of paint in the "mixing" well and don't want to waste it; perhaps I need to be more economical with my mixes, and maybe try #21: mixing on the paper.

Hi Michele. Do you find it hard to look at a painting without casting a critical over it? Or do you still get the same joy and wonder you had as a youngster. I ask because I loved driving, bet when it became my career, I found myself finding mistakes in other peoples driving, ( and not looking for them), and that took some of the joy out of it.

Unfortunately I often see art as work. On the one hand being a professional artist was all I ever wanted. On the other hand, I'm like oh good it's Saturday I can do some sewing (or other hobby). I go through long periods of time where I either don't want to paint or don't have time to paint because I am building courses or making videos. I then, after a break find myself wanting to paint again. I am just leaving one of my 'don't want to paint because it's work' phases and will start painting again soon. It's important to be grateful for my job, it's impossible to do any job and feel the same way as you do about a hobby.

Wonderful video! I'm a beginner and Tip #24 got me! I've wasted a lot of money listening to too many videos and purchasing everything what they suggested. I'm thinking if I buy all of these supplies, it will improve my painting.....it doesn't!! Question: In your $2.99 membership, do you cover steps on digitizing and/or editing your art in Photoshop ? Loving your Etsy shop!
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Жыл бұрын
Thanks 🙏 no the lower membership is just a donation level the upper level is colour mixing videos. My Etsy shop does need an update, I am actually going to stop selling prints as it's just a lot of trouble and postage is so high. My work is professionally scanned and printed by a local company. I haven't had a lot of luck with online companies, can't get the same quality.
@3534538 Жыл бұрын
#24: As I was starting I bought one of those "watercolour plus brush"-sets and I could have slapped myself for the wasted money. A friend suggested to "donate it to a child" but I could never do that to an innocent child 😐 And your point about exploitation is especially important, more people should consider this. When I hear "I can't afford this" I ask if thy get coffee from S. or the likes and usually they do - often daily, on their way to work. Just skip that for one month and you can afford a decent student grade set of paint and a brush. For good paper you may have to forgo that coffee for another month, though 🙂 Thank you for another helpful video 🥰

The one thing i wish is that when you go buy your art supply item online it wont tell you where the country the product was made in.. for example telling a person where the irem was manufactured in description could really mmake a difference between buying a item that supports workers making decent pay or supports a corporation making higher profits corporation are always honest like i used to buy princeton brush think8ng they are made in usa then i received them from India and china that was frustrating.i mean are these workers getting paid a decent salary or working under harsh hours or in bad factories conditions..yeah no thank really disappointed in my just trusting a art supplier so princeton might have some type of brush made in usa but not everyone of brushes are made in usa disappointing, i wosh i could start a brush making business from recycled plastic barrels and synthetic recycled bristles..lol all the joys of dreams...so now i said im deftly calling operator and have them tell me where supply is made your so right artist need to be careful and consider where supplies are coming from like another example micca sometimes can be supplied by children working in bad condition mining in india..sooo its better to really research your art supplies..this is a great video..ive learned so much from your videos over these last four years and its really nice to see your channel grow..🎨👩🎨✍🇨🇦🇺🇲💛
