As I have had to go gluten and dairy free your tadka dal recipes have become a mainstay and I’m not sure how I’d survive without it. Thank you!!!!

Your Chana Dal w/tadka recipe, very similar to this one, was the gateway drug that got me into cooking harder recipies from your channel. This looks like a perfect recipe for a first timer, very easy and so yummy. Can't wait to try this one!

@snlarini997 ай бұрын
A neutral oil - here we have sunflower oil or vegetable oil (rapeseed oil). I read US call vegetable oil canola oil

Looks lovely but isn't it better to add the salt towards the end of the cooking and also to remove the scum when it forms at the beginning?
@MrCElk7 ай бұрын
Hi Chetna, I've been cooking Dal for about 40 years. Every other recipe I've ever used has a requirement to skim off the foam or "scum" as some of them say. Have I been wasting my time? Just as an aside I use your recipes for my Christmas dinner 😃
@FoodwithChetna7 ай бұрын
ok so most of the times dal is cooked in pressure cookers in India and I have never seen anyone skim the top off so yeah dont bother with that. So glad you tried the recipes for Christmas.
@MrCElk7 ай бұрын
@@FoodwithChetna Given the pressure cooker thing this makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the reply and your advice.

Do you know why Indian legume stews usually flavor the dish at the end with the tempering method instead of just sauteeing the aromatics and dumping legumes and cooking it all together?

I live in a small rural town on the Olympic Peninsula in WA State. We have no Indian restaurants here and I love Indian food. Thank you for your channel, Chetna, as I now can make delicious Indian dishes for me and my friends.
@peppapig37617 ай бұрын
That’s not how you cook Dhaal. You skim the top when boiling the lentils Also you put the tempered onions etc in the Dhaal and cook. Also ginger. ??? Not authentic.
@FoodwithChetna7 ай бұрын
😂😂😂 clearly you have no idea about dals or indian food otherwise you would have known that there are hundreds i mean HUNDREDS of ways of making dal. You will be shocked when you see dal being cooked without garlic too or any tadka for that matter
@peppapig37617 ай бұрын
@@FoodwithChetna keep your pants on. I’m old enough how to cook Dhaal. What you made would be tasteless because the two most important parts of Dhaal making is that they should make love together the Dhaal and Tempering. You just sloped the Tempering on top of the Dhaal. That’s not love that’s quick time Dhaal. COMMENT FROM A FEMALE BRAHMIN !
