If you recall... I told you so... no way were you gonna hit 200 whp through that exhaust. Totally not gloating or anything. ;) OTOH... 170 whp with what you have now is pretty darn impressive! That thing gotta be a fun little toy. I'd like to see just a true dual exhaust on the OEM manifolds before the headers.

Hedman and Doug's show headers for that car. Make sure to use a straight through flow muffler, not a chambered one. The chambered cost power, proven many times most recently on Engine Masters. Walker Super Turbo don't reduce the tube size in the muffler, and are affordable and decent sound with no drone.

Have to say I love the AMX series. I had a 1979 AMX 304 with the 4 speed. I wish I would have never sold that thing. It was slow as hell but still a ton fun. Would love to get one now that I could afford to keep one up. I also have considered doing one as a restomod.

Of all the toy things we have to drive, this is the one that gets the most looks and thumbs up. It's just the right mix of weird cool and quick. Oddly enough it was a GREAT little car to drive at 110whp... what's even better at 170whp 😀 The exhaust is for sure a huge restriction, you just really can't pump any more air through that straw, it will be interesting to see how it effects the graphs. We're HOPING something on the order of 25+ hp... we'll see that may be wishful thinking 🤔

I bought a new 1976 Jeep CJ-5 Renegade with the AMC 304 V8 3 Speed manual in it. You could only get it with a 2 bbl. carb and single exhaust. Replaced the 2 bbl. with a Holly 650 and Edelbrock manifold. Don't remember the jets but it was purchased from a company on 4 Wheeler Magazine that was selling them for the jeep application. Also replaced the stock single exhaust with stock like dual exhaust headers and pipes and Cherry Bomb mufflers at the same time. Never had it on a dyno but it was way more powerful than stock. Ran and sounded great as well. I always wondered why you couldn't order it that way new except for the Cherry Bombs of course. It really woke that motor up.

I 304 swapped a 79 AMC Eagle SX4 from the factory 258 / 5 speed to the 304 / 5 speed. Needless to say that T5 transmission didn't last very long after the built 304 / 4 barrel engine swap. Replaced with a t176 / dana 300 swap. Dropped the axles out of the donor CJ7 I got the trans and transfer case from. So I fabbed in the solid axles on leaf springs and had fun with it for a couple years before trading it for a CJ5

you know a 360 amc has the same outside dimensions as the 304, the rebuild cost would be about the same, and the motor would be a direct bolt in replacement. with a 10 to 1 compression, a mild cam like a comp cam H280, the same intake and carb, with headers you can make a easy 300 hp wheel.

I'll tell you why, these cars came with 2 barrel carbs, and the throttle pedal travel was not long enough for the secondaries of a 4 barrel. Every small bodied amc I have owned, I had to remove and put more bend in the throttle pedal for more travel before reaching floor. For exhaust, I suggest staying with cast freeflow manifolds, which you don't yet have on the pass side, and will require modifying the strut rod bracket, Then 2-1/4 pipe duals. i currently have a 401/727 1971 Javelin, a 401/727 1974 Gremlin (daily driver), and a 304/998 1979 Spirit AMX.

Please consider making a video showing something I think would be very interesting to see. With good lighting, have a camera directly strait above the Brawler Carburetor, with the car idling, and slowly gently gradually start opening the Throttle... it is my "belief" that FUEL will *NOT* start flowing from the primary Main Circuit BOOSTERS until something over 2,000 engine rpms, maybe even 2,500... Up to 2,000 to 2,500 at minimal throttle opening, as-if the car was cruising done a level road at say oh 35-40 mph constant steady speed... It is running on THE IDLE CIRCUIT which at that point is being discharged out of the Holley Transfer Slots. The car drives on the Idle Circuit / Transfer Slots up to maybe 40-ish MPG steady state Cruise. A Video directly above the carb and very slowly opening it and we all can see just when exactly the main circuit comes on-line... Thanks !

Did you shorten the throttle cable so that you had the proper length? Bill had shown that there was excess cable flexing when you opened the throttle, stopping the carb from actually being pulled wide open. IMO the dyno tuning you have been doing is partially wasted not actually having full throttle! Change the high speed air bleeds to 28 from the 31's and that will help keep the fuel curve from going lean at the top of the fuel curve/higher rpm. Holley does show that the carb has 74 secondary main jets.
@LucoreAuto
@LucoreAuto 2 жыл бұрын
Bill made adjustments to the throttle cable yes and we have confirmed the blades are opening completely 👌 Yes some of the dyno time we are doing is a bit of a waste, but we're trying to show all this stuff in phases. The smart way would be do ALL this stuff at once then just tune it one time. Unfortunately then we couldn't determine exactly what does what. On the final phase we'll get it all dialed in just right 😀

On carburated motors like this, richer rather than leaner always better. The leanest cylinder is very lean on a motor like this - and it's better to be on the rich side for power always. Appears it lost some power going leaner which shows this. Having said that - headers will help this afr curve out down low - and be better everywhere.

At this point that car has got to be fun to drive again at the least... headers and exhaust will get you another 35-50 hp out of it... mebe more... then it will be downright *FUN* to drive. Might have you another road course beast here? Bit of suspension work and go rally it?
@LucoreAuto
@LucoreAuto 2 жыл бұрын
Oh it is a freaking BLAST to drive right now, not over powering the chassis but so fun. We're really hoping to see a 30whp gain with the exhaust.. plus a bit of extra rumble 😉 The original plan with this thing was to do some road course racing and vintage racing with it so.... we'll see! The Ford Capri projects though are changing things rapidly around here 😉

@@LucoreAuto Look for a set of the turbo mufflers they installed on the late 60's MOPAR 426 Hemi. Everybody used to just call them Hemi turbo's. I think it's the Dynomax 17749 Super Turbo Mufflers now. They sounded deep and good and didn't restrict power much. Definitely don't run a crossover or X pipe if you want the good sound. I believe the MOPAR camp did a good a bit of testing before settling on those for their street Hemi's. Had a set on my 66 Nova with 383 and liked them. Definitely not the generic sound of a Flowmaster. Definitely other choices, but how much do you want to sink into it?

@@peskypeet Mopar 440 Hps had a cross over pipe 1971 and back. They had the best sound. They had 2 1/4 exhaust and long mufflers. I had an exhaust shop put in a cross over pipe in a Cuda 340 E body. I think it helped the sound and drivability and mileage.

@@LucoreAuto imho all things considered, a 1967 - 1974 stock AMC V-8 Delco Type Distributor fitted with a UniLite Infrared Points Eliminator Kit, or Accel brand of same, or eBay brand of same. My opinion which is "obscure" is only the Infrared "system" goes totally uneffected by any shaft sideplay that exist or develops, infrared keeps right on goin'... Whereas everything else, especially original points, but then again also later, all HEI, HAL Effect, Flying Magnet, Iron Reluctor, yada yada yada "systems"... Those are all "PROXIMITY SENSITIVE", it's gotta be re-close, with a gap, but not touch... Infrared "UniLite" is not. Oh, one just must be SURE to CHECK & most likely TRIM the Rotor Button Locator Pins, both the round one and the square one, so as they do NOT protrude THRU the ~1/8" thickness of the pole-piece flange that the Rotor Button screws to, cause if the locator pins stick thru, they distort & can damage or even break the UniLite round black plastic 8-Slotted "Trigger Ring". The GM Delco points type distributor unit is unbeatable when it comes to pieces and parts availability, choices, and just downright market saturation man... As long as the 2-main-shaft Bushings are good, oh, and most importantly, the Top Bushing GREASE WELL is clean and full of fresh grease, the AMC Delco Points type Distributor itself works flawlessly, and is easily and obviously curve-able, right there, on top, easily accessible, directly beneath the screw-on Rotor Button... Mr Gasket # 926G 927G or 928G Peace.
