I bought a new 1976 Jeep CJ-5 Renegade with the AMC 304 V8 3 Speed manual in it. You could only get it with a 2 bbl. carb and single exhaust. Replaced the 2 bbl. with a Holly 650 and Edelbrock manifold. Don't remember the jets but it was purchased from a company on 4 Wheeler Magazine that was selling them for the jeep application. Also replaced the stock single exhaust with stock like dual exhaust headers and pipes and Cherry Bomb mufflers at the same time. Never had it on a dyno but it was way more powerful than stock. Ran and sounded great as well. I always wondered why you couldn't order it that way new except for the Cherry Bombs of course. It really woke that motor up.

I'll tell you why, these cars came with 2 barrel carbs, and the throttle pedal travel was not long enough for the secondaries of a 4 barrel. Every small bodied amc I have owned, I had to remove and put more bend in the throttle pedal for more travel before reaching floor. For exhaust, I suggest staying with cast freeflow manifolds, which you don't yet have on the pass side, and will require modifying the strut rod bracket, Then 2-1/4 pipe duals. i currently have a 401/727 1971 Javelin, a 401/727 1974 Gremlin (daily driver), and a 304/998 1979 Spirit AMX.

Please consider making a video showing something I think would be very interesting to see. With good lighting, have a camera directly strait above the Brawler Carburetor, with the car idling, and slowly gently gradually start opening the Throttle... it is my "belief" that FUEL will *NOT* start flowing from the primary Main Circuit BOOSTERS until something over 2,000 engine rpms, maybe even 2,500... Up to 2,000 to 2,500 at minimal throttle opening, as-if the car was cruising done a level road at say oh 35-40 mph constant steady speed... It is running on THE IDLE CIRCUIT which at that point is being discharged out of the Holley Transfer Slots. The car drives on the Idle Circuit / Transfer Slots up to maybe 40-ish MPG steady state Cruise. A Video directly above the carb and very slowly opening it and we all can see just when exactly the main circuit comes on-line... Thanks !

Did you shorten the throttle cable so that you had the proper length? Bill had shown that there was excess cable flexing when you opened the throttle, stopping the carb from actually being pulled wide open. IMO the dyno tuning you have been doing is partially wasted not actually having full throttle! Change the high speed air bleeds to 28 from the 31's and that will help keep the fuel curve from going lean at the top of the fuel curve/higher rpm. Holley does show that the carb has 74 secondary main jets.
@LucoreAuto2 жыл бұрын
Bill made adjustments to the throttle cable yes and we have confirmed the blades are opening completely 👌 Yes some of the dyno time we are doing is a bit of a waste, but we're trying to show all this stuff in phases. The smart way would be do ALL this stuff at once then just tune it one time. Unfortunately then we couldn't determine exactly what does what. On the final phase we'll get it all dialed in just right 😀

On carburated motors like this, richer rather than leaner always better. The leanest cylinder is very lean on a motor like this - and it's better to be on the rich side for power always. Appears it lost some power going leaner which shows this. Having said that - headers will help this afr curve out down low - and be better everywhere.

If not already done, please please change / re-curve the Distributor Ignition Advance Curve to 12 deg adv at idle with 24 deg max total of Mechanical Advance all-in by oh... 2,700 rpms... and pick-up another 20 or so HP man...

Actually saving that for kind of "the last upgrade", next up headers to let this thing breathe! What do you prefer? Stick with factory ignition? Or.....?

@@LucoreAuto imho all things considered, a 1967 - 1974 stock AMC V-8 Delco Type Distributor fitted with a UniLite Infrared Points Eliminator Kit, or Accel brand of same, or eBay brand of same. My opinion which is "obscure" is only the Infrared "system" goes totally uneffected by any shaft sideplay that exist or develops, infrared keeps right on goin'... Whereas everything else, especially original points, but then again also later, all HEI, HAL Effect, Flying Magnet, Iron Reluctor, yada yada yada "systems"... Those are all "PROXIMITY SENSITIVE", it's gotta be re-close, with a gap, but not touch... Infrared "UniLite" is not. Oh, one just must be SURE to CHECK & most likely TRIM the Rotor Button Locator Pins, both the round one and the square one, so as they do NOT protrude THRU the ~1/8" thickness of the pole-piece flange that the Rotor Button screws to, cause if the locator pins stick thru, they distort & can damage or even break the UniLite round black plastic 8-Slotted "Trigger Ring". The GM Delco points type distributor unit is unbeatable when it comes to pieces and parts availability, choices, and just downright market saturation man... As long as the 2-main-shaft Bushings are good, oh, and most importantly, the Top Bushing GREASE WELL is clean and full of fresh grease, the AMC Delco Points type Distributor itself works flawlessly, and is easily and obviously curve-able, right there, on top, easily accessible, directly beneath the screw-on Rotor Button... Mr Gasket # 926G 927G or 928G Peace.

I remember test driving one in 79 (still in high school) and I pulled up to a new Z28 and ask the salesman if I could race him . He said go for it. Needless to say I was banging gears ( 4 speed ) Bye bye 👋 Camaro !

Oh these little things have tons of potential and were very interesting for their time. Didn't make tons of power but they are a great platform. Massive front and rear factory swaybars? There's a whole lot more in store for this thing we are FAR from done!

We were banging around in a 79 Firebird Formula at the time, 301. IMO, that thing ran pretty good, the faster we went, the better it ran.

Good power to weight ratio. I think these little bad-boys were only 28-2900 lbs. I think stock they came with 2.87 rear end with 3.15 and possibly 3.54's optional. That'd definitely help wake it up as well.

i wonder if you put a electric fan on ...??? so there is less parasitic drag on your engine.??

Yes absolutely that would free up a little power as well. Not a lot, this is a clutched fan currently, but that would free up some and a likely simple upgrade down the road.
