I'm 45 and just recently quit my job as a furniture frame shop supervisor to be a plumber tech. I had been a supervisor for 15 years and finally realized I wasn't going anywhere. I asked for a raise and they said I made enough. So I found out that a local plumber was looking to train for a tech job. I jumped at it because I knew it would be a trade job that would pay a lot better. So far I'm pleased with the move! Better late than never!!

Good for you! I have never believed in the saying "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" ... not saying your old, but I truly believe no matter how old you are, if you set your mind to it, you can do just about anything. Good luck in your new trade!

I love hearing your stories whilst watching the time lapse of the work being carried out. It is oddly satisfying. Thanks for the uploads and shame on that contractor for no showing that many times like Al Pacino/Tony Montana says in the Scarface film We only have 2 things in this world, Our word, and our balls and I don't break em for no one! Hopefully, he eventually shows up and makes good on his word!

I've never watched that movie but I do subscribe to that standard. If a person cannot make it, the least he can do is to let the person that's waiting for him know that he cannot make it. It's one of the worst forms of disrespect to leave a person hanging.

Most homeowners will NEVER know the gratifying satisfaction of building their own home, and finishing the electrical, plumbing, drywall, taping, insulating, roofing, cabinets etc. All this w/o having a mortgage to deal with. Kudos!!! to YOU! I've always approached theses jobs with the thought that, If that guy can do it there's no reason why I can't! It just takes confidence in ones abilities to succeed. As for the construction field of contractors....well your absolutely correct, it's not getting any better. Young people today because of prenatal pressure, that the key to success is college. While working within my field for over 35 years I made (6) figures w/o ever stressing. And retired with a great pension, being able to do what I want to do when I want to do it. We owe it these young folks to attempt to provide direction and steering in the path they'll be able to provide no only for themselves but their families and not be a burden on society or rely on Gov't to provide. Just my 2 c's. So keep on, your an inspiration to all that view your channel!

What you are saying is so true. They use to have classes in schools in my day so you were able to pick that as a trade. But they don't have it anymore. And the ones who are in business take advantage especially of women.... So I come on you tube to learn how to do things in my house on my own.

Seeing the process of your home building is so inspiring and uplifting. In an age where people enslave themselves to a bank for the rest of their life to buy a home, you went ahead and through your own sweat and struggle built a home for your family. Maybe it would have been easier to to get money from a bank and pay people to build the home for you, but in 20-30 years, one of your grandchildren will tell the story of how his grandpa built the family home with his own hands, and that's the stuff we all should live for.

In my mind, this is the best video you have done. It's good to be truthful as a tradesman. I just took my pickup to a mechanic, to refix everything I have had worked on for the last 3 years. It stinks to be lied to or given sloppy work. I paid over 100 dollars to have a tune up done. It was sloppy and now it is being redone. This video needed to be longer, Heath.

I hope a few pairs of young ears perked up and listened to what you had to say about pursuing a career in the trades. It is honest and lucrative work. If you commit to a time frame for a job and exhibit your best work ethic on the assignment you cannot go wrong. Still hoping the man that agreed to help you will make his way up to your place to finish what he committed to doing. However, if he does not, I know for a certainty you and your family will not skip a beat getting things done to perfection. Independence Day is just around the corner: What a GREAT example of independence your completed home will be! Keep going. You are well and truly in the home stretch now.

totally agree about showing up on time. I got a lot of cabinet jobs just because I showed up when a bunch of other guys said they would and did not. And then I presented myself like a professional, chatted a bit to loosen the atmosphere and I got 36 years worth of cabinet work. My main customer relations tool was my vacuum cleaner to clean up my mess, when NO ONE else did. Most of the time I didn't have to because the people stepped in to do it. But most were kinda shocked that I was even going to do the cleaning.

Love your story - you should go on the motivational speaking circuit in high schools. I keep telling young men to go into the trades. They just want to sit in front of a computer. And after going thru two house renovations I decided that the operative word in Independent Contractor is "INDEPENDENT", lol! It's been hard for decades to find anyone who returns calls, stays on schedule and is reliable. The problem is that it takes management skills above the skilled trade itself, to run your own company. And long term the trades are really hard on the body. I sympathize with middle aged guys who are worn out and live with chronic pain, but don't have the financial cushion to retire young. That's when they need to be prepared to go into management mode - but not everyone is cut out for that.

Totally agree! We have been dealing with a contractor to install a new tub. It was a series of failures and lack of communication on their part. The owner wasn't much better either. We with held half the payment until someone finally came out to view what they considered a completed job. I told him if I wanted a less than professional job, I would have installed it myself. They needed to take pride in their work. They were fuming. Lol. But in the end, we got them to come back and finish it as it should be.

sadly, i think we all come across no shows eventually. I had been busy at work and my mothers house needed new carpet so i asked around and a few friends pointed me to someone they used. I called, made arrangements he came out and inspected and gave me a quote. the day we had set aside for him to come and do the carpet he called me and told me his vehicle had broken down. the next day he called and said he was on his way, he never showed up. I ended up doing it all myself as well. Coming from a military background it was hard for me to understand someone that said something and didnt do it. now, a few years out of the military i see its all too common.

you had me thinking. back in January 1972, i became a union electrician apprentice in NYC. i got paid 1.90 a hour. we worked a 8 hour day, 5 straight, and 3 OT. i came home with around 90 dollars a week. it was a 5 year apprenticeship, with school 2 nights a week. but when the work crush hit the construction industry in the 70's, it took us 7 years to become journeyman electricians. when i got my A card, a full electrician, i started making 12.85 a hour. wow, big money. when i retired over 40 years later, i was working as a foreman, making close to 50 dollars a hour, but due to a injury to my neck and right shoulder, and spending some time out with 2 surgeries to my right shoulder, the union told me it was time for me to muster out, because they felt that with my injury, i couldn't man the job anymore. after 40 years, and them willing to pay me disability for the rest of my life, i jumped at it. trust me, having worked the construction side of the business, and working deck jobs in the middle of the winter, my body is paying for it now. that's why i envy you when i see how hard you work on the house.

Schools have trades here but they only put the low achieving kids in those classes where I am. I was an AP/honors/honor roll student and I was put in carpentry/electrical because of a gap in my schedule. I took it serious, learned to do some basic things, and loved it. I still fix stuff around the house and because of that class, I was able to do basic work on my car. When I tried to take the second, more advanced class my third year in school, I was laughed out of the office. Five years later and I’m considering automechanic school.

I am a drywaller for 30 years and just decided to get out of it last week. It is simple disgusting how you get treated by the homeowners, they want it done next to nothing, complaining about the dust it makes(I'm using a vacuum sander), calling you any time of day even at 2 in the morning for some pity thing. Taking them to court for not paying bills. Following high lawyer bills. Mind you, not everyone is like that, but most. I simply had enough. It is not the work, but dealing with the people.

I enjoy your story telling, you are good at it. I would have been excited too if I were you, to get some help finishing. I truly believe he wasn't meant to help you, everything happens for a reason. That contractor wasn't probably any good anyway. At least you can now say you completed it yourself and that is something to be proud of. Hang in there, you got this. Take Care.

This old house had a series about apprenticeships. It was fascinating to find out so many young people would rather go into debt going to college than into a real world job, making money right away. My husband is an auto mechanic, I would highly recommend it for anyone who wants to make a decent living without a huge amount of debt. Most places are willing to train you and have good health and life insurance. Trust me certified mechanics are in high demand!

This! Man if I had the time and didn't need to work, I'd love to come out there and learn how to do this kind of stuff. I'd love to be able to tackle home projects on my own.

We completed our most recent renovation by ourselves after firing 3 contractors. The labor pool is so shallow in our area that a good contractor costs a mint, and those contractors who are sitting at home looking for work are there for a reason because their workmanship is very low quality. I learned a lot during this process, and the trust factor plays a lot in hiring contractors. The largest problem we encountered during the renovation is that those contractors that we hired wouldn't follow through with the expectations that they set, and we trusted they would follow through with what they agreed to. Make sure that you vet your contractors thoroughly so you won't be disappointed when they don't show up. You did what I would have done after day one of waiting for a no-show.
