Those looking to move to Seattle need to be aware of the Seattle Freeze. I suggest you know people here before moving or have family here, because making friends around the city isn't easy. People here tend to be pretty introverted. Lots of newcomers have said they've felt isolated at times.

This video kinda lacks of showing the REAL essence of Seattle that makes it a great place to live. We're more than just fancy restaurants or these hippie stores that we actually don't go to every weekend. Seattle is genuinely the most subtle place to live. It's made up of smart, open minded and down to earth people. We like being out there being productive and contributing to our community. The scenery is absolutely amazing, makes you feel like you're living in an urban city but at the same time you still feel like you're surrounded by nature. Honestly Grey's Anatomy is probably the closest thing that captures and show what life is here like(and most of its filming is not even set in Seattle btw) for people who don't live here. It's nothing compared to other major cities like LA which the media makes it seem like a perfect place to live but in real life, it's trash, it's very polluted, and the people are so simple minded and superficial. There's a reason why the richest man in the world is living here. Anyways my point is... what the hell is this video???
@sazji6 жыл бұрын
It’s a strange video that captures a very upscale, very white side of the city (though Asians were included as a curiosity for interested white people I guess).

@Dizzy2069 жыл бұрын
***** Well Seattle is one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. We are building new buildings at an amazing rate. More and more people are moving here regardless of the insane housing cost. Minimum wage is the highest in the country. You do have a point though, transportation here is horrible. But we all know Seattle will always be the premiere city in the Northwest. Portland can claim they are better as much as they want, but statistics don't lie.

Well people don’t like random strangers talking to them. They like to be friendly and polite, but hate random small talk from people they don’t know. That’s how a lot of people socialize and make friends around the world, so transplants sometimes feel shot down in Seattle. If you’re more of an introverted type.. Seattle will be nice. There aren’t as many social expectations to not be socially “weird.” People don’t mind if you’re kind of awkward, as long as you’re a decent person. Sometimes we’re downright compassionate about it, because we were right there just a few days ago ourselves lol. A lot of transplants tend to get off-put, repelled, and confused by social awkwardness. That leaves us feeling misunderstood by everyone but our own. Seattle is very big on kindred-spirit type friendships.. most Seattlelites don’t like having friends just to have them. You just gotta find hobbies/do activities that will lead you to like-minded people. Also, don’t take getting “shot down” too personally. A lot of people from Seattle can be overly shy and modest…sometimes they just don’t understand that you actually want to be friends lol. Social media has definitely made it worse. Also.. if someone seems rude and blows you off for no reason when you try to talk them.. they probably just got socially overwhelmed and went into flight mode. 😅 most of us are actually really nice. Extroverted transplants just need to be tolerant so they can avoid getting jaded too soon. I hope this explains the Seattle “freeze” a little bit. Natives understand that it’s just the way a lot of us are, so we’re tolerant and back-off when we need to. If we’re meant to be friends, we will keep running into them till it happens naturally. Although, it never hurts to shoot your shot and get more assertive. Just keep trying and broaden your horizons. Northwest people value kindness and open-mindedness. If you are willing to make friends with people of all ages and demographic.. you will quickly build great kindred spirit relationships. I know we seem cliquey.. but a lot of us are just afraid of getting judged or misunderstood. We all pretty much have an “outsider” complex.. which leaves us unintentionally treating others as such lol. We really like to feel like “they just get me” before we commit to strong friendships.

I might be moving to Seattle. I cannot drive and cannot ride a bike. Will it be possible to rely solely on public transportation there? Or you still need a car to commute. I used to live in Boston before and was ok with the public transportation. How does it compare to Boston?
@eclint10 жыл бұрын
I lived there for almost 3 years and moved back to NYC. Why?? Well, I'm from here originally..but that's another story. As for biking, it seems that just before I left in August, the whole downtown was just being transformed into a biking paradise new bike lanes, rent a bikes sponsored by Alaskan Airlines. Although it seems most of the residents will take a while to take advantage. The buses are great but slow and kind of outdated. But that's changing too. You will want a car and when you do you'll want it every day except trying to find parking after 6pm and hating traffic. Depending on where you live and how you want to commute the bus thing is ok but will take getting used to. It'll almost make you feel like you are in another country or town. But they are trying to upgrade the buses to be more environmentally friendly. I don't know Boston that much though.
@circlebamboo1000010 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I guess if you're comparing to NYC, NYC has a lot more to do than Seattle.

Mariel A. Thank you so much. Is it very expensive to live within the city limits?
@marielan9110 жыл бұрын
Depends, on your income and preferences (Size & neighborhood). You could find a room in a large apartment or house with roommates for around $700 in a decent neighborhood or large closet to live in for $350. If you want a place all to yourself that could cost anywhere from $900 to $2000 depending on the neighborhood and age of the building. There is also low income housing options that some may qualify for. Best place to start looking I think would be craigslist or reddit.

Watching all these minimum wage workers on this video makes me see this town has a very gloomy feel over it. It seems like a very expensive town that really only caters to people who are young and have good jobs. I couldn't see someone like me feeling comfortable in a restaurant, full of 24 year old douche hipsters, who make 120k a year. i thought Seattle was very diverse in terms of Asian population compared to other cities. Asians are only 14 percent population but that's a lot for American city. it's the first time i'm hearing about the highest discrimination lawsuit rates. where do i find that information?
@TheLovely99010 жыл бұрын
The Asian population is larger than African Americans. Look up Discrimination rates from a peer review journal or article for WA State, its high.

Idk, I tend to see more younger people then older but it has a lot of diversity. I live in the city, walk, take the bus and work in retail. I see a lot of diversity regularly and I have yet to witness any discrimination. I'm curious to know where you got your numbers, and how those in any way relate to what the average citizen faces on a day to day?
@ikickz0010 жыл бұрын
It's not just about african Americans. I'm getting that vibe from how you worded it. What about gay and transgender? Or people with much deeper discrimination? Disabled people? And even if there wasn't discrimination, blacks would very likely still be minority. This isn't the east coast and definitely not the south.

I grew up during the 70's when diversity was pushed really hard. This is a different time now, so that is part of the fight as well now, but we cannot forget the racism that still exists in this world, and most of it is not in your face, but opportunities that a lot of people will not have.

I was born and raised here. With the explosion of amazon and other companies the cost of living has gone through the roof. There are homeless camps all over. A place called the jungle near i5 was closed down less then a year ago. It was not place you’d want to step into. Lots of rundown motorhomes line nearby neighborhoods, and tents everywhere. While high paying jobs became available the lower paying support services don’t get paid well for the cost of living in and around the city. The person cooking your food or helping you with your shopping may call a tent Home in Seattle. Your server makes great money they get paid the highest minimum wage in the country and they make 18 to 20% in tips . $15 is the minimum wage in the downtown Seattle area except for small businesses they can pay a bit less. $15 an hr gets you a small Studio apartment with two other roommates at $1100 each plus your share of the bills. You can rent a nicer place in Manhattan for less. I recommend visiting Seattle it’s beautiful and it has a great feel in the clean parts. I do not in any way shape or form recommend that you move here. If you can afford $800,000 or more for a small home with cash on hand immediately after seeing it you could possibly find a place no guarantee ( just a side note the old renters were probably told they could not renew their lease to your new home because the house became a gold mine to the owner that sold it to you.) please visit and support the good restaurants and Attractions we have here, just really think about moving here.

Seattle is a little too waspy and expensive. It's better to live in the south suburbs. Not past federal way. Tacoma is too far.

BrandonSeattle I went out to Tacoma and its not as half as bad as people claim it was. I had people telling me it's Seattle's version of Oakland. Tacoma was pretty cool to me.

+BrandonSeattle Snohomish County is where it's at. South Everett is a fine town (as well as Lynnwood, Mukilteo and Edmonds) and the commute to Seattle isn't bad. 25-30 minutes, or so.

Still not as cool as Portland.
@dan10things10 жыл бұрын
It's not a contest, they are complimentary cities, and Seattle was cool long before Portland was. Portland is already past it's cool point as well (all the old bars and clubs have closed or are closing and there has been massive building). I think you will see, it's all about how to retain the heart and soul of your city through growth and change, it will be interesting to see where Portland lands 10 years from now as it grows, it's still so small!
@matthieuallen9 жыл бұрын
chattigre I lived in Portland for a really long time and everyone has this inferiority complex/hatred of Seattle, to the point where they feel the need to go out of their way to irrelevantly comment on a video about Seattle how "Portland is cooler."

Seattle is only great when you have alot of money to do these things. The downside of Seattle is that it is full of people littering. The urban sprawl is the greatest in the whole country which means there is more pollution from cars. There are too many smokers polluting the air and the homeless people are everywhere.

Let's agree to be competitive siblings. I'll posit that Portland is Seattle's somewhat odd younger brother, but if you like one, you'll probably like the other.
