It seems that so many are shocked over Dr Greger informing over the benefits from PROTEIN RESTRICTION! Crazy since it has been known in real evidence based science for a long time.

Thanks for doing this interview. I've read "How Not to Age" and also struggle with this question. I've never taken the 1g+/lb Attia recommendation seriously, but am concerned with protein & aging. Stu Phillips still pushes protein but has moderated his view a bit. Of course a great deal of his research is funded by meat and dairy. It seems to be focused on short-term anabolic response rather than long-term muscle maintenance. In terms of long-term outcomes, it appears to me that the harms of protein might be mitigated with old age, along with the benefit.

I am wondering how the results world be if you‘d control for the quality of the diet

@@daniel_sobhani_thisonelife For population studies, they control as well as they can. I think since the Seven Country Study there's been evidence that animal protein -- not just animal fat -- is associated with bad outcomes. There are some studies that show bad effects for high protein consumption prior to age 65, but not so much after. Animal models definitely show that protein/bcaa/methionine reduction prolong lifespan. Studies on so-called anabolic resistance are inconclusive -- whether it exists independent of activity reduction, and whether it can be mitigated by diet. I'm not so sure I would go so far as to say "no effect" but it must be subtle or it would be more easily observable.

I’m also wondering how anyone is supposed to eat such low protein levels. 0.8 grams per kilogram of bodyweight is super low. I don’t see how you can get that low without using refined sources of calories that have the protein stripped out of them. I’m a whole food plant based “bodybuilder” with an active job. I weigh 78 kilos. I eat 3400 calories a day to slowly gain weight over time. I make no effort to eat high protein. I don’t eat a ton of beans or soy. I get 1.6 grams per kilo without even trying. There is no conceivable way for me to eat enough calories a day (even to just maintain my body) and get anywhere near 0.8 grams per kilo while eating Whole Foods. And this is a diet most would consider to be the lowest possible protein diet, while plant foods, nothing processed and no animal foods. I would have to eat 1700 calories a day to get to that level and I would waste away with no energy on such a calorie intake. Maybe I’m missing something here.

@@CarlYota Yes, it is hard to be under the RDA if you eat real food. Even just bread & rice. I think that most North Americans who are actually protein deficient got there by eating nothing but potato chips & soda. But then there's the question of whether "not deficient" is sufficient to ward of sarcopenia. Here the human outcomes are not so clear.

I canhelp but feel a certain skepticism on part of the interviewer’s side. It seems like he can’t let go of his notions about how much protein you need to grow muscles. It all boils down to opinion bias and it may be hard to accept something that contradicts your own beliefs (oftentimes derived from less scientific evidence).

Beards make you look older. Being bald makes you look older. These are huge effects actually. Plus, most people don’t make any effort to build muscle. And thus you are either fat or you are skinny. And skinny people look “frail”. None of that has anything to do with health as influenced by diet. Now people are gonna regret having too little muscle mass and bone density as the get in thier 70s and lack the leg strength to get up the stairs and are at high risk of falling in the shower and breaking thier hips. But again, this has nothing to do with dietary advice. Only resistance training will save you from that.

Greger is not a physician as he never was able to complete his residency so he has no license or board certification in anything and so has no experience since he never saw one patient and his 650 page books which keep people even more sedentary than they should be are not accredited by anything. Would you get on a plane or get dental work by someone with no license or experience in anything?

Dr Gregor is an MD and has a PhD in clinical nutrition making him more qualified to speak on nutrition than most physicians who know nothing of it. He doesn't need to do hand on patient care to do what he does. I have had care of physicians who gave the worst tabloid dietary advice. Just because you don't like what he's saying doesn't mean it's not correct. Do whatever you like, it's your life.

@@greensorrel6860 He has a MD degree but you can't do anything with it until you complete your residency which he has not done. He has no Ph.D in anything and the proper term is a registered dietitian or RD and he has no license in that either. I state the exact facts and you need to do this too and not use emotional talk. If you think he knows anything about nutrition ask him which of these 36 plant anti nutrients are the most to least problematic for a human, Aquaporins, Gliadin, Furocoumarins, Cesium, Serpins, Solanines, Cyanide, Thallium, Bergapten and Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids, Acetogenins, Saponins, Cyanogenic Glycosides, toxic Alkaloids, Persin, Urushiol, Caramboxin, Hypoglycin, Solanine, Aconitine, Atropine, Coniine, Chaconine, Colchicine, Cytisine, Dimethyltryptamine, Harmine, Harmaline, Raffinose Oligosaccharides, Ibogaine, Kawain, Mescaline, Scopolamine, Trypsin inhibitors, Amylase inhibitors and Taxine.
