Second and last part of the long road trip in e-Golf. In this part I travel north to Hamar and then via Gjøvik and back to Oslo. I delivered some items and tried to fit six chairs in the tiny e-Golf.

The heated windscreen turns on from the Menu button on Climate Control. The defroster directs just air to the windscreen, it doesn't activate the heating feature.

Great video !! ACC works very nicely indeed on the Golf! I definitel confirm.(Especially when you can set larger safety distance with vehicle ahead)

Bjorn, I was watching this video and I have a tip: To switch on the heated front windscreen you have to press the button on the middle round turnswitch on the climate section. Then you will get a nice screen and on the bottom you can switch on the heat! Hidden Heat Feature for the win! The button that you pressed just sends hot air up the windscreen ;-)

great video! regarding the ACC i think you can get inside the ACC settings on the 'car configuration/driving assists' on the GPS and it would let you predefine the the start distance of the ACC or either to remember the last position selected. At least I can do it on my regular Golf

I agree. But then again - even after owning a Volkswagen for 5-10 years, you sometimes find new, clever features about them, that you never noticed before, and often when having others in your car, they'll comment like "Oh, there's an umbrella inside the door? That is really clever" or whatever, and you'll sorta smile at the things you take completely for granted when driving a VW. :) A good mantra is, that if you think something is weird (like Bjørn in the video), and you are sitting in a Volkswagen, then you are doing it wrong and the correct way exists. :) Very, very few things are explicitly annoying (like resetting of settings) in Volkswagens, and if they are, they are usually down to safety concerns, like early generations of AutoHold for example.

Some extra info: ACC distance can be set to remember last setting or preferred setting in the option menu. Also, the front windscreen heater must be activated with the "Menu" button for the AC settings.

Hi Björn, maybe i missed this but i remeber you saying it only had two regen modes in part 1, it actually have 3 regen modes and one breaking mode. if you move the gear shifter to the left and right you set how hard it will regen when you release the accelerometer. B you use when you want to slow down fast. Other than that i like your video, i borrowed a e-golf for a few days from a dealer and i had about the same conclusion as you. Really nice and well build car but not enough range, the new one will probably be a much better car for many.

20:27 You can set a default ACC distance in the car setup menu, or select "remember my last setting". At least in the GTE, so I presume that the e-Golf has the same option. I prefer to change the distance according to the circumstance anyway. I have no favorite distance. Pro tip: One quick press on the ACC distance button to bring the option up in the display, then use the arrows to decrease or increase.

I have mine set to start at the middle distance since I most often turn it on on a dry motorway where that's a good distance. In slower traffic and grimy weather I can then easily set it to a higher distance.

Bjorn, any way to set the road/highway camera on 'no auto focus' or 'infinite fixed focus'? This is a general comment for many videos (which I love, BTW) where the road shots are usually out of focus so we can't read road signs, etc. Thanks!

Always enjoying your reviews. I see in Norway the fast charging system is well developed so even with 22-24kWh battery pack you can manage to make road trips. I am curious how much you pay there per time or per kW. Here the paid DCFC can be 7-10 times more then the residential price per kW.

I have a non-electric version and can confirm there's no problem with the ACC radar when it snows. I'd consider the e-Golf as commuter car. Your point on the cost of charging is true, many fast chargers are priced similarly to the cost of gas, with the exception of Tesla super chargers. Yet another reason to wait for Model 3 :-)
@Nicolition
@Nicolition 7 жыл бұрын
Well... yes and no... Because the Model 3 you will have to pay to charge the car. Only Model S and X that is free. BUT there is a good chance it will be less expensive.
@JohnDoe-vx3z
@JohnDoe-vx3z 7 жыл бұрын
My point was: the super charger rates are attractively priced. You pay 20cts or so per kWh on the super chargers vs up to 40-70cts I've seen on other fast chargers. Lets say you consume 20kWh/100km. Then you'd pay 4€ on the super charger and 14€ on an expensive fast charger. Compared with a gas golf consuming 7l/100km at 1.35€/l, you'd pay 9.45€. So the 4€ on the super charger are a fair deal, but some other fast chargers cannot even compete with gas prices.

From what year did the radar become heated? I can't find anything about it in the manual on my 2012 model. And I've had the ACC turn off and refuse to work a few times.
@JohnDoe-vx3z
@JohnDoe-vx3z 7 жыл бұрын
The older models had a different ACC sensor (round shape). Since 2014, a mid-range radar sensor is used (square shape). The VW manual still doesn't mention the heating, but the product data sheets from Bosch do mention it as option for both types. www.bosch-mobility-solutions.com/global/products-and-services/passenger-cars-and-light-commercial-vehicles/driver-assistance-systems/predictive-emergency-braking-system/mid-range-radar-sensor-(mrr)/product-data-sheet-mid-range-radar-sensor-(mrr)-2.pdf

Adaptive cruise looks great for commuting, but it is expensive option on many cars in North America. Also I'm quite envious (and I think a lot of other NA EV drivers as well) about the state of charing infrastructure in Norway; you have so many DCFC!
@gazerding7525
@gazerding7525 7 жыл бұрын
It has to do with the amount of EVs in Norway. The tax system helps a lot. No taxes on new EVs, not even VAT. The e-Golf list price here is lower than all the fossil fuel models at around 306K NOK. Cheapest fossil Golf is a 1L 110hp TSI starting at 307K NOK, and with less extras. Around 60k NOK of that price is just taxes.
@Trades46
@Trades46 7 жыл бұрын
Still this is what needs to happen to drive EV sales. Yes the low prices from tax breaks may helped but due to Norway's increasing EV presence is what is driving the growth of DCFC. Because adopting is slow in North America due to cheap gas & govt. ties to oil there is little incentive to do the same.

+Trades46 When you have to pay nearly $6/gal for diesel here, even more for gasoline, then there is a clear advantage to going electric. 99% of our power is hydro generated as well. 1kWh is like 13 cents total at most currently.

Why test egolf without heat pump and compare it with ev with heat pump, that is not fair. I really need to know result heat pump vs heatpump version. I think plus 20-30km if we will use version with heat pump.

6:30 Now Grønn Kontakt has fast chargers on at least two Circle K stations here in Vestfold. Ringdalskogen (Exit 44) and Nykirke (Exit 33) :) But still, in Grelland (also in Vestfold) they still have this crappy charger. I doubt that many people use it. Nice video ;)

I would just rent a fossil car from Hertz, Avis or other for longer trips. Or actually not, because I have two fossil cars now in the garage. Would love an electric city car if Finland did not have crazy car taxation (with potential tax law changes anytime in near future). Currently I have no interest in "buying registeration tax" which may mean loss of thousands of Euros overnight...

You wont see any heat strings on the windshield. There is instead a super thin silver foil all over the windshield that works as a heating element. newatlas.com/volkswagen-climate-windscreen/47569/

it not about hard to please, it would be logical to me that he edited whole trip first and then split it into two parts, so i didn't get why not equal parts. it is my suggestion to edit whole video in one piece and then split it equaly. it is also not easy to watch hour and half in one sitting

:) a. All current Teslas larger battery sure has it's obvious advantages but it costs 2X or 3X more than the Golf or Leaf. b. The Tesla global Super Charging network makes their cars much more practical since all of us only have 24 hours in our days/life. Slow charging away from home is a total waist of the individual's one and only life. c. A Golf is not a large freight truck for big elephant equipment size stuff, even if it is only 6 chairs..... d. VW's adaptive cruise control seem to have been designed with real life stopping distance in mind. e. I have had VW's since I was 17 or 18 in the late 1960s. My last VW was a new 2ooo TDI Bora/Jetta. Sad to say VW's management lost my life long loyalty when they tried to pull a Donnie T. style deception on me about the emissions software. Not just because they made a global lie to perhaps a 100,000 or so people. This also shows how stupid the management is in general thinking they could get away with a global lie, thus what other stupid decisions in their product line have they done or will they do in the future???? f. Enjoyed your live stream from Bjorn's cockpit last time............. g. Say hello to wifie for us............. :)
