I got into lockpicking yesterday when I popped my first lock (Master # 3 padlock) with 2 paperclips. It contained some stuff I put in there as a kid, but 8 years later I lost the key. Would using paperclips damage the lockpad any? It took me 2 hours to pop because people kept preeching on applying gentle pressure, I kept hearing a click multiple times, as if the padlock was unlocked. Turns out I was being too soft with the "tension wrench" clip.

I recognize that this comment is 4 years old, but I totally get what you're saying. My work has a cabinet that we unlock for cleaning supplies, and someone took the only key for it home recently. I ended up making a top of the keyway tension wrench and pick out of two paperclips. I was a hero that day...
@theaberrantdon4 жыл бұрын
@@MrHyped12 The same thing happened to me yesterday, but with the paper towel dispenser. Ive watched entirely too many lock picking videos and bent a big paoer clip in half and then into an L forba tension wrench, then bent a small paper clip into a standard hook and popped the lock in about a minute. The lock is really simple and would normally never take anyone that long. I only really had to manipulate the middle pin of a 3 pin lock, but still, that feeling when the tension wrench turnwd the cylinder was amazing. I had done it once before with a small luggage pad lock that someone attached to my desk over 20 years ago in middle school. I didn't know how to puck a lock back then and used a universal household interior emergency key as a tension wrench and bent a paperclip into different shapes until I actually made a key. I digress. After feeling a lock move with propperly shaped picks and crappy materials, I really want to get good pucks and wrenches and try picking some real locks. I want to spend the money for good picks so I can actually feel good control over the pins and get a good response through the pick, as opposed to the springy and spongey mess I got through a paper clip. This is going to be fun!

Eh first time i popped a lock was when i was 15 in hs, i was in a computer room taking credit recovery classes, there was this locked small office door right behind me from my cpu, teacher in there wasnt very "observant" so i got bored, took a couple of clips, made a half ass tension and a rake.. Later that day this teacher i hated got in trouble for "not locking that door back", so it was a good day

I dabbled in picking about 10 years ago and only had 2 tools that I made. They were a snake rake and tension wrench that were decent and fit in my wallet. Now I'm full into it. I bought a cheap $12 Chinese set and after breaking around 5 of them in a weekend, I bought the $20 GoSo kit. I was surprised at the huge difference in quality up from my first set. They still aren't amazing, but I easily opened all 12 locks in my collection. Now I have the Sparrows "Tuxedo" kit which is an extremely big step up from the rest! I absolutely _love_ this hobby. And will be sticking with it for a long time to come.

My first (and so far, only) lockpick kit I found on the ground at a LARP. It is a number of hand-made spring steel tools, including a tensioner, all inside one of those fat pens with a screw cap, the pen bits having been removed. As I was using it in a LARP, I did not need to go above that very much given that the LARP only uses those really low-security Master locks with the single-warded "crinkle key". - - - I have used those tools on more "real" locks to varying degrees of success. The lack of comfort handles has been a problem, but the portability of the set makes up for that.
@macnutz42065 жыл бұрын
Thanks much for this. I am buying my first kit at the end of this month. I do not want to waste money but I do not want to be held up by having the wrong stuff. Now I know which picks to get two or three of, in prep for a lot of noob breakage. And I changed my mind about some stuff I was going to buy. Glad I decided to wait a month. I think I found a good source for cheap used locks via a local locksmith. We spoke on the phone and he seemed OK with helping a bit. He said he would sell them by the kilo and laughed.

When you talk about repetitive stress leading to breaking, you are talking about work hardening. You _could_ anneal once in awhile and avoid that. Just heat in a torch until red and let cool down, stress all gone.
@cody33624 жыл бұрын
But then the steal isnt hardened
@cody33624 жыл бұрын
@Homer when you "anneal" metal you soften it up, and then the metal will bend instead of flexing. You would have to re harden it to make it strong enough to not bend

I wish I'd seen this video before I bought my first pick kit. I bought from a top manufacturer, but didn't notice, as I was a complete noob, that it didn't include a TOK tension wrench. Guess what I needed for the first lock I got? *lol* It's a good kit overall, however, and I didn't pay a lot for it. I have quite a few other things being shipped my way now. ;-) You learn your lessons and keep moving forward....hopefully. Sparrows is gonna *LOVE* me!

I bought a pick set for $6 including shipping. After 30 mins of sanding and buffing. They are better than my sparrow set.

In over forty years of locksmithing I can't recall ever having sanded or buffed my lock picks! Why would you need to? Do you believe if it is shinny it will work better? When I was young and inexperienced I would break a pick every couple of hundred locks, now, I can't remember the last time I purchased a pick, if you learn the proper methods, your picks can last for a very long time.

Thanks for the info. Just ordered my first kit to play with (24 piece ebay kit) and this is helpful in knowing what each of them will be able to do. Funny thing, my first impression was "oh lockpicking is for criminals" but thinking about it- if I had to break into something, I would just use bolt cutters or a grinder and save myself the trouble. I feel now it's more like a puzzle, similar to playing chess or sudoku. Looking forward to getting started, you guys make it look like fun.

I think I'm going to get both peterson and sparrow hooks. I will need spares anyway and this will give me a chance to choose a fsvkrite between the two.

Euro is not used in UK. It is GBP so it is even more expensive. But you do a great job with informative picking advice so who cares about cost as you say you get what you pay for. I just opened my first two locks one padlock and one Garage door Handel. But only after I bought HPC picks and 3 good Tension wrenches. The previous set just did not do it but the quality ones had the locks open within 3 mins of each other. In UK and bought from Bonn in Germany where they do use Euro.

I've just started following you. You have been very generous on some of your giveaways but I think that you could give away very simple starter kits on a regular basis for the newer viewers to your channel. I'm getting my kit from sparrows after learning on homemade picks. Thanks

This video really helped me a lot, because I also want to start lockpicking. I'm from Germany and I always wonder about why in America the locks in doors are installed upside down because in Europe we got them installed 180 degree turned from your view.

Nice video. Will certainly help me when starting out now as a newbie. Any chance to make a short list of the picks you are presenting here in the description? I am just writing it down as I watch the video, but might be useful for others :) Thanks for great videos!
