You sound so depressed in this 2015 video. I’m surprised. Watching that pos melt brought a smile to my face. Though it is a Master so not wholly unexpected. Glad you are cheerier in more recent videos.

It really is funny that the lock that most certainly is not tough under fire has the text "TOUGH UNDER FIRE" written onto it. It's like printing "THIS IS BULLETPROOF" onto a t-shirt.

Oddly enough, you could probably close the shackle and have this "lock" be about as secure as it was before you melted it.

From the time you did the first video of this lock to the second time, the lock had had its manufacturing moved out of the US. In the first video it said USA. But on the second one it no longer said that

The first one -- sent to me by Papa Gleb -- was quite old. They have not been made in the USA for a very long time.

+l0ckcr4ck3r I can't imagine what they would complain about. I already have my settlement proposal ready: If they stop misleading people about the security of their products, I'll stop telling the truth. Seriously, I doubt they would ever bring me to court over this for two reasons. First, I'm telling the truth. Second, the Streisand effect.

LockPickingLawyer " If they stop misleading people about the security of their products.." Never gunna happen HT.. just keep doing what your doing. Be interested to find out what they have been sending Bill in any case.

Nice one! I wonder what it would take to bring the thin cover to fracture using a nut splitter?
@lockpickinglawyer9 жыл бұрын
+jimu57 Thanks. It probably would not take much force... my understanding is that cast zinc is relatively brittle. But I can't picture how you would position a nut splitter on this lock. Can you tell me what you had in mind?I'm already thinking of faster ways to do this attack. I'm pretty sure that I left roughly 10 seconds on the table by not rigging a way to constantly pull on the core so it would pop out as soon as the metal reached temperature. I'm thinking that a piece of music wire with a barb on the end inserted into the lock would have been perfect and saved time. Oh well. I'm not doing this video again. Master lock got enough of my money!
@jimu579 жыл бұрын
True. I was thinking of a steel "key" in the keyway with an extension to pull on it as the zinc was softening. Dont have to wait until it melts. Just enough to weaken it from heat. I would give it oh......... 39.2 seconds to fail. Not necessarily an actual nut splitter. More like a wide jaw C clamp with a hardened wedge against the lock. I think that compressive firce with a wedge may be more effective than impact force in this case.
@lockpickinglawyer9 жыл бұрын
+jimu57 maybe I'll take the remains of this lock and put it in my 20 ton press under a wedge of tool steel. If I can crack it, we'll have proof of concept. Then I'll think about how to do it with portable tools.

Thanks for sharing this. I agree that Master are unlikely to take you to court, but I wouldn't be surprised if they ask you to remove this content, "or else". Perhaps their legal department will realise that sending a toothless legal letter to a lawyer is a waste of time, though. The vice will have been acting as a heat sink as you did this. If the lock was hanging from a hasp, I suspect it would've failed even faster.
@lockpickinglawyer9 жыл бұрын
I honestly doubt there will ever be an issue. If there is... Well, that's what anti slapp laws are for. Although I might welcome a lawsuit... After all, I'd love to see my videos on cnn. Interesting point about the vice. I had considered dong this holding the lock with channel locks, or hanging it on a chain and pulling the core with wire... They would be more "real world." But it proved difficult to get good video of it. Since I only got one take, I decided to err on the side of viewability.

To be fair (and this is coming from someone who has watched, and enjoyed all of the LPL videos in the future), this sort of attack is going to draw a whole heap of attention in the field. And you might as well phone the cops yourself if you're going to light up a lock at night.
@julianp28684 жыл бұрын
To be fair you would have to consider & include what it is locked to as well?? Using a blow torch of any kind carries a hazard and if you was a thief, this would make you stand out like an Elastoplast on a finger.

Yet another example of what decays American manufacturers from within: perhaps letting the clever young MBAs and ad execs dictate budgetary distributions rather than asking the old guys in the plant what makes for strong vs weak locks. "Customers only read "hardened" on the shackles, so screw the body and innards; no one will know the difference."
