Two things that strike me as a bit weird: 1.Has anyone considered foul play with her shoe lace. The timing would be right. 2. Has anyone noticed the negative tone of the male commentator? “this is a girl who had a problem with her costume at us nationals a year ago; she had a skate blade break at a skate america completion in oct; and now the public address is announcing Tonya Harding’s name, and she’s still lacing up her boots" 1. Tonya had no problem with her costume, the judges did 2. Tonya didn't "have her skate blade break", it broke (she probably didn't have the best equipment money could buy, and she skated hard) 3. obviously Tonya must secure her shoelace for her own safety purposes before getting on the ice. perhaps someone should have run to the judges and informed them

In regards to your point #2: “Tonya didn’t ‘have her skate blade break’, it broke” Are you interpreting the word “have” in that sentence as if he was saying that Tonya...like...”arranged” for her skate blade to break? Karunya Sabapathy I understand your point of view & many now think she wasn't guilty. I think she made very poor choices, due to her life circumstances. I do think the judge in her criminal trial was far too hard on her. She was decimated by huge fines and given a life long ban. I believe she should be allowed to coach professionally now. People have committed far worse crimes & not received such harsh penalties. She was convicted for trying to hinder the course of the investigation. There were notes found in her handwriting at the Boston Arena. The criminals were told to hit Kerrigan on her landing leg......Who else would know such things. There is a place for redemption for everyone. I just wish she'd told the truth after all this time. There are some excellent documentaries on the whole incident. In the movie, 'I, Tonya', shows a document of Tonya Harding growing up. Her childhood was very tough but she made it through. At the age of three her mom made her start doing figure skating. Her mother abused her at the age of 9+, also saying she wasn't good enough. She found her first love and he abused her. Tonya left him but eventually went back to him and married him. He abused her even more but she stayed. One time her and her mom were 'fighting' and her mom 'accidently' threw a knife right into Tonya's arm. Figure skating was Tonya's dream growing up and her dream came true. Tonya Harding was the first American woman to land a triple axel, Harding also was the first in the world to notch two triple axels in a single competition. She did that at Skate America in 1991. She was very competitive but she took it too far one time. She took a metal bat and broke her opponents kneecaps because she was convinced by her husband it would be a great idea. She eventually got caught and in trial she got banned from figure skating for life. You should watch 'I, Tonya' to learn more about Harding's life.

I remember when she landed her triple jump. She was such a strong skater then, maybe not graceful, but I cheered her on. I really was hoping she was the one to win the gold medal at the Olympics. At that time I didn't know of a Nancy. It was so sad to see it all come undone just a few years later. So many hopefuls have lost their future due to a bad relationship. It didn't help much that her mother was so terrible. Tonya, I'm sure you are happy now being a mother. Don't focus on the past. Look to the next good thing in your life.

I'm actually surprised Scott Hamilton was as supportive in his commentary towards Tonya. He did say , " things like this just don't happen in competition, but has happened several times to Tonya", but besides that... he made mostly empathetic remarks and said several times she is just doing what a skater is instructed to do if an issue with equipment occurs. I guess I just mean that given all the craziness going on in their little world of ice skating at that time, he could have gotten away with saying just about anything , but he really didn't . And I think that was very professional of him.

Scott was about done with her drama at this point. He would get increasingly annoyed with her antics as the games progressed but by the time her skate lace was magically fixed, (rushing Josee Chuinard ahead a spot and wrecking her performance as a result,) he lowered the boom on her when her second attempt happened. He also witnessed her gamesmanship in 1993 in Prague when she had a broken skate blade that magically repaired itself without any major repairs or replacements when it was clear they weren't going to let her wait until the end to skate. This part of the broadcast was clearly his breaking point and he was NOT kind to her during her second attempt.

She put skating on the map for the Jerry Springer crowd. She was a good skater, not spectacular. She didn't have much money or support. No world class athlete at that level of competition should ever have an equipment failure so basic. That said, the traditional skating crowd was snooty. Nancy K was their kind of girl, Tonya was not. Nancy was graceful and smooth, Tonya was more athletic and less polished. To me, Nancy came off as entitled, but over all she was the better performer because she came ready. She even overcame Tonya's assault and competed. In other words, she was mentally tougher.

Me, too. And why did the crowd have to boo her? Kerrigan was also a victim: she clearly outskated Baiul, but the judged gave Baiul technical marks almost equal to Nancy’s, though she two footed at least two jumps, almost falling on one. Sloppy spins and her one combination, if you could call it that, was thrown in carelessly at the end, almost as an afterthought. Nancy skated flawlessly, with at least two very difficult combinations. Her spins were centered and her signature spiral was breathtaking. It was an insult to her to score Baiul so similarly. Baiul deservedly won the artistic mark, but had she been scored fairly in the technical mark, Kerrigan would have won. It wasn’t Oksana’s fault but her win was due to two things: (1) eastern bloc voting. Jan Hoffman cast the decisive vote in Baiul’s favor. A fine skater of the old East German system, he wasn’t about to let an American win. The Russian and other east bloc nations followed suit. (2) The judging panel was disgusted by the whole Nancy-Tonya scandal and decided someone had to be punished. With Harding finishing well out of the medals, Nancy was sacrificed. A pathetic treatment to a young lady who was totally innocent and the victim of a terrifying attack from which she miraculously recovered. Ironically, Baiul’s star dimmed quickly; she succumbed to alcoholism and was never really the skater that once dazzled the world. As for Kerrigan, she ran off with a married man and raised a family, occasionally appearing in skating exhibits, demonstrating she’d hardly missed a step since her Olympic days. Tragedy befell the entire Kerrigan family a few years later when one of Nancy’s brothers killed her beloved father. It seems there were no winners in this competition. So very tragic.
