Hamar, NORWAY - 1994 Lillehammer, Figure Skating, Ladies' Free Skate - Medal Award Ceremony - First, interviews with the Gold Medalist, Oksana Baiul of Ukraine, and Silver Medalist, Nancy Kerrigan of the United States. Then, the cameras caught Nancy mouthing off unpleasantly about Oksana to Bronze Medalist, Chen Lu of China, about the delay in starting the ceremony thinking that they were waiting for Oksana to redo her make-up after all that crying when in fact, the officials were scrambling to find a recording of the Ukrainian National Anthem. Then of course, is the ceremony.

Nancy is proof on that theory about bronze medalists vs silver. In 1992 she seemed really happy and excited to win the bronze, was grinning and laughing on the podium. And then here, she looks like she'd like to drop kick Oksana back to the Ukraine.

nancy's reaction to having to wait for the medal ceremony as if it was oksana's fault when they were actually looking for ukraine's national anthem always gets me. this was ukraine's first ever olympics as an independent nation, and oksana won their ONLY gold medal during those games. yes, it was worth it to take extra time to find her anthem!!! the first time ukrainians would hear their anthem during the medal ceremony!!! i get that she didn't know in the moment that that was what was taking a long time, but even if it was just oksana delaying them - i think she'd earned the right to cry

Exactly. Oksana was an orphan that lost her closest family before she even turned 14, Nancy had all these sponsorships and Vera Wang costumes. The girl just won the most prestigious competition in the world, there's no fault in her, or anyone that had the same achievement, being emotional about the win

@Elina Balt I truly agree even though there were some controversies that Nancy lost the gold by a tiebreaker by the German judge. Oksana shows grace and elegance, and that gives her the edge. Nancy would have won it if the first mark the technical merit was the tiebreaker. I think the judging system is fair that Oksana deserves the gold even though I am an American, obviously the Americans feel the same way of wanting Nancy to win. Also, I speak to Oksana once, and she seems to be nice.

What poor sport Nancy Kerrigan was, she said herself that she was proud after maybe missing the games, she skated her best. How is that arrogant? She first said herself she missed her first jump, but then realized well it wasn’t what I was supposed to do but I still did it well. I know her comment regarding Oksana was rude, but there’s no need to rip her to shreds for trying to make a positive light on her first jump.
@bexlo9794
@bexlo9794 6 ай бұрын
@@Musickt196 Her tone was condescending to the interviewer who simply repeated what Nancy herself had just said. Nancy said she missed her first jump. The interviewer asked her how she felt when she missed her first jump and how she was able to go through the rest of the program - valid question since many skaters will flub the rest of the program with an early mistake. Nancy then denies that she missed the first jump and acts as though the interviewer was crazy for asking that. A better answer would have been that it didn't go as planned but it was still strong.
@Musickt196

@@bexlo9794 Honestly, are we really going to nitpick every little thing she said? Nobody would have cared if this were anyone else. The fact that Nancy was coddled so much by the media, which wasn't her fault, resulted in everyone expecting her to be a perfect little princess. I really don't see anything she said wrong here. We're just picking her apart because it's the cool thing to do. Maybe she was just trying to make herself feel better about what she originally said. Maybe she was implying *she herself* was crazy for selling herself short. The internet has just got to stop being so offended over every little thing.

@@Musickt196 I agree. I'm no Nancy apologist since I actually don't think she's the nicest person on the planet from what I know of her, but people expect way too much of a young woman in that position in that moment. She was disappointed, and she was trying to work through it. She wasn't perfect, but she didn't tear her medal off or give Oksana the cold shoulder. She pulled herself together as best she could and got through what had to feel terrible to her. And I'm guessing if you asked her today, she'd have a much more mature perspective on all of this.

As symphony and philharmonic orchestras around the world now play this anthem as a sign of solidarity with the people of Ukraine, I felt a need to come back and remember this particular moment, the first time that many people heard it, and the first time in an Olympic Games... I will recall the pride my grandmother felt in seeing the flag her parents embraced and knew but never lived or dared imagine would fly again over a sovereign nation, let alone in the Olympic Games, raised over the ceremony in Norway, and ignore the petty behavior of certain athletes who showed their true character that night...

Yes, someone could have misinformed Nancy for the real reason behind the delay in the ceremony (not being able to find a copy of the Ukrainian national anthem, in which, this was their first time competeing as an independent country. That being said, i think the expression on her fave during the actual ceremony says it all (as said in "I, Tonya," she looks like she stepped in poo). In the end... both skaters made some technical mistakes, but Oksana's artistry (which her routine's choreography was a million times better than Nancy's) put her over (as it should). To those also claiming the "orphan pity card," just remember that Nancy had her own pity card she could have used.... the attack which the entire world knew. I believe more people would be saying it was a pity win if Nancy had won.

No one said it was an opinion. The point made was that it was not necessary to mention it and the reason for which it was brought up was manipulative, implying that the East-German angle had anything to do with the judging. It did not. The judge, in an interview, mentioned the artistry made a difference for his score and Baiul’s artistry was mind-blowing. Everyone saw that.

Lot of people on this thread calling Nancy a poor sport, but come on now. Did you watch her performance? I think her interview didn't go well due to the bewilderment. What did she have to do to win, jazz hands? Finest silver medal performance ever. I am a Kristi Yamaguchi fan, but I think Nancy Kerrigan here did even better than Kristi two years earlier.

I love all three of the skaters I think they are all very beautiful skaters in their own way was this fair I believe so yeah Nancy acted a little on sportsmanship but I guess she was a little bit disappointed and it was hard for her to hide that can't really say I wasn't in her shoes I'm pretty sure she's gotten over it by now God bless stay safe everyone bye

The great Nancy Kerrigan got deducted unfairly by two judges on her short program of which she completed all the required elements perfectly! Oksana Bauil did not skate cleanly and did not get deducted at all! Nancy Kerrigan only doubled a triple flip in her freeskate which was a perfect double flip, then she compensated that by adding another triple. But I guess nobody noticed that. Kudos to Nancy. Nobody likes injustice. I'm sure anyone else in her unfair situation would have reacted the same if not worse. Love ya Nancy! You deserved the gold medal!

Ok, Kerrigan’s Mum, nice try! She skated like a robot with zero feeling and the whole world felt and saw Baiul was head and shoulders above this spoilt loser.

I am sorry about what Nancy had been through six weeks before the Olympics that she was clubbed in her knee during the practice at the 1994 U.S. Nationals, and she worried if she might make it on time to compete at the Olympics, with all the tensions going on between her and her teammate also rival, and the attention is on her and Tonya, few people didn't notice about the reigning world champion who is the big favorite to win, and she barely won it on the tie-breaker given by the German judge. To hear her whining and complaining about Oksana, that show Un sportsman like behavior when the camera talking about Oksana.

Ohhh brother all the negative remarks about Kerrigan. Just rediculous. We are only human...we all make mistakes. She was so close....that would be very hard to take. Let's see you beat Nancy in skills and then come complain about her!

3:14. Starting out, the translator asked her question in English instead of their normal language of gibberish and she asked her the question 4:37 when she “missed her jump,” she did? Why did the reporter say that? Look at Bryant Gumbble’s hair. Hah it’s awesome. Wait, he said “Greg Gumble.” Did he switch his name or is that his brother?

Baiul's interpreter was Victor Petrenko, the 1992 Olympic gold medalist in Men's Figure Skating and the son-in-law of Baiul's coach, Galina Zmievskaya. He convinced Zmievskaya, also his coach, to take in a 14-year-old Ukrainian orphan named Oksana Baiul and become both her guardian and coach, with Petrenko covering Baiul's expenses. Petrenko interpreted Tracy Wilson's question into Russian (not English) for Baiul.

The irony of all this is Tonya's bad choices were all because not only did she didn't think she wasn't good enough but the obvious politics by the usfsa and IOC. They wanted Kerrigan as the face of USA figure skating but was still screwed in the end by politics. As adorable as Oksana was and her hardships were sad she wasn't better than Nancy Kerrigan that night. Edit.. Now that I'm older and wiser and watched more from a technical and artistic perspective Oksana was definitely the winner. Kerrigan was robotic and she was historically not consistent. This was one of the few programs she skated clean.

Obviously, everyone at the Olympics wants the gold medal, but to be the top three in the world is an outstanding feat within itself. All three of them should've been extremely proud of themselves. The irony of the 1994 scandal is that neither Nancy Kerrigan nor Tonya Harding won the gold medal that year.

I mean the girl was an orphan, came from a former commie country , it was the biggest moment of her life- yeah, sure, Kerrigan wouldn't have cried if she won. Nancy also later had an affair with her older manager who divorced his wife to marry her- those endorsement deals made her very attractive, She sucks, Phony.
