3D Router, when a CNC machine is overkill

I came up with this idea as a way to avoid difficulties and wasting time when preparing a CNC for certain jobs. Unless the project is very repetitive, sometimes you can spend more time preparing the router CNC than working on the project itself.
With this manual router, you can drill holes and mill very fast. Its 43mm clamping collar makes it very versatile and switching between milling and drilling takes very little time.

Me too. I am going to watch this well, and keep thinking about it. In fact, I want to compare what I have thought about in my head to what he built. I want to make a lathe alternatiive where a pipe of say plastic could be held down by skateboard bearings and be allowed to turn, and on the end have a spindle with a milling bit that can move in an XYZ fashion.

Okay, after the first few minutes I thought "what a friggin waste of time". But then things started getting interesting. I have to admit I quickly became way beyond just impressed. There is an incredible amount of thought gone into this design. I have a workshop full of similar makeshift/replacement tools but this one incorporates so many functions into one apparatus. It's definitely time I download those plans. Kudos to you master.

*I already have a larger 2.5HP router that I have mounted in a table **MyBest.Tools** I not longer have to lug that unit out for the majority of routing that I do. The compact router is much easier to handle and control. Can easily cut through hardwoods with the largest 1/4" shank bits I have. Impressive. Cordless is a huge bonus considering I already have several 5AH DeWalt batteries for other tools. Highly recommended.*

@johnware5312

Neat rig there.. You are right about how the time in creating G code for a cnc router is often not worth it. Often I use my CNC in a pure mechanical mode by doing basically what you do, just turn on the router and start cranking knobs on the back of the steppers, Other times I fire it completely up and use the manual move commands to get a far higher degree of accuracy where needed. Often the old ways of doing things is far better, the secret is in knowing which is best for the job at hand.

Who the heck needs a CNC or a 3D Printer when you got one of this. If only I had the skill to build one of this bad boys, :). Nice job man.

This is brilliant, and elegant. Easier than a CNC? Harder than a CNC? This misses the point. I play a lovely, simple Gibson L0. It's not ornate, and sometimes requires more effort to play above the 9th fret. Modern instruments may be easier to play, and have a better finish, but that simple, unadorned L0 makes beautiful music. Cheers.

I was thinking about making a similar device, but with the router mounted horizontally so it can be used to cut box joints and also act as a lathe. I really like your slide mechanism and lever-controlled vertical movement system.
