3m Paint Protection Film Install

Here my video with some advice on trimming the PPF on the vehicle. I have been professionally certified as an installer since the making of the video you are currently watching. How to install 3m, HEXIS, or Xpel Paint Protection Film like a pro on any shaped panel!

Protect your investment with an easy at home application of this product. You can also cover an entire panel and cut afterwards to create a seamless appearance, but this method is much easier for the untrained person to perform successfully.

tech tip, spray the solution on the outside too, so you can squeegee without worrying about marring the 3m.

Get a second bottle of just water to use on the edges. You will want to rinse the soap out to get the edges to hold on any curved areas. 👍🏻

Just an extra - if you can't get the edges to stick down and they keep lifting up just use a hair dryer on medium setting for 20 seconds and squeegee the edges down they stick perfect.

Good video. My ZR2 has horrible free pin striping from the trails. But someone ran into the side of me and ran so the truck is having the paint fixed as we speak. When I get it back I am applying this film in the bad areas. Because of this video I know that I can do it.

Thank you for the video. I just got OEM Lexus 3m paint protection film to apply to my mirrors that I just got and there are no directions or instructions on how to apply. I wasn't sure if I should use a slip solution at all as some manufactures don't want you to use and apply the film as is. Glad I found this! Should make for an easy install when I apply it later today!

It does work, but like I said, most people don’t realize that the shampoo contains glycerols which are oils. Try the dish soap.

Just bought a new 2022 Ram 1500. I had road rash in front of my rear tire on my 2019. The paint became chipped from the road rash. Will the film get compromised as the paint did. If the film is not replaced, will it wear thru to the paint.

Just use a few drops of dish soap and water to lay it down and then just water by itself in another bottle to rinse the edges so they tack down.

It is actually easy to remove, but doesn’t come off when washing it thankfully. I’ve had I on a year and no yellowing that’s I can see. Just keep it clean with a wrap detailing spray.

Between Xpel and 3m are they basically the same material (thickness, flexibility)? I just got the xpel and its pretty flexible which is something that I like, but #m has bigger sizes in amazon.

However, I’ve since been certified by Hexis Films as a professional installer of their brand film (Hexis bodyfence x) and much prefer the Hexis product. It can be removed with a little heat and the proper technique. You have to pull it towards you. Most people peel it off by pulling it over itself which actually creates the potential to damage the paint. I can post a video. Thanks for the idea!

Yeah you can. Just don’t get any on the edge. It will make the edge visible. You can always clean it up with some isopropyl alcohol though if you do.

can you help me with this case, please? I ordered the material from ebay and Inoticed that on both ends of the roll the layer was not fully contacted with each, meaning the layer makes zig-zag circles on each. Once he opened the first 3 meters of the item we found longitudinal lines in the width direction. This is due to any roll after opening to cut some length, you can't obtain the same roll circulation at its original case

Absolutely! Dish soap is actually preferable since it doesn’t contain glycerols (oils) that shampoo does. A couple drops of dawn and some water in one bottle and just plain water in another bottle to rinse the edges to promote adhesion

Hello, I was looking at 3M website for instructions and they said to only use the alcohol spray when you need to stretch the film, their direction pretty much just say to spare the baby shampoo mixture right away.

I’ve since been trained and certified by HEXIS and you are correct. Baby shampoo has glycerols in it (oils) which you do not want to use for application. You can still use it and get decent results, but I recommend a few drops of dish soap with water. Fill one bottle with that mixture and one of just water to rinse it out in the edges to get them to stick down.

I already got PPF on the front end of my car but I want to do a few of the side panels. Do you have any tips on how to do a full door and get the cut outs of the door handle?

Clay n polish yes if needed. Never wax as it will not allow the adhesive to properly stick to the paint. Hence he does ipa wipe down. Also when tacking and sealing you want to be using ipa mix not soap, not as forgiving as soap but you will get a much better bond faster and reduce chance of fingers coming up.

God advise. I just recommended using the baby shampoo for beginners since it is a bit more forgiving on the install, and the bay shampoo has minimal detergents in it. No tackling issues after a year on my end.

Hey do you think a sheet of this could be applied to a windshield? I’ve got a Ferrari with a perfect original windshield and honestly I’m more concerned with that. You can kind of repair on the body but the window scares me.

It doesn’t look good on glass. I’ve tested it lol. There are a few companies that now make windshield film though. It isn’t really very common though.

@@newfinishautospa ya you’re right. I did my headlights and they came out perfect. I had a small roll of 3M pro series. So I sacrificed a two foot square and did a portion of the windshield as a test. It was awful. Obviously it needs to be the actual windshield material, and has to be done by professionals, not me.

It can be. Depends on how flat our contoured the bumper is. Normally you will have to do "inlays" with bumpers meaning that you do it in separate parts.

Yes. I prefer Hexis bodyfence over 3m, but 3m is still a good product if you can’t get Hexis film. All ppf except for Hexis actually has a yellowish tint to it where as Hexis bodyfence is a 100% clear film

It could yes. Just be sure to care for the paint on the bare surfaces with a ceramic or other UV blocking protectant. I removed it after a year and absolutely no difference in color.

Yeah the edges will be noticeable. A full hood wrapped in one piece is pretty easy once you know the techniques. You’ll need a 5’ x 6’ piece to do a hood.

A shop wanted 3500 to clear bra the front of my truck rolls of the film aren't expensive I'll just do it myself doesn't seem difficult at all

To do a full front clip you’ll need about 20 feet from a full roll. $1400 for a 66’ roll so about $500 in material to do it right without piecing it together. It is not difficult on flat panels, but as soon as the surface starts to curve or the film bridges over a gap you will be pulling your hair out. I recently passed the HEXIS Bodyfence certification test. Out of a group of 8, I was the only one who passed the hands on part of the exam. I would charge $1800 for the bumper, hood, fenders, and mirror backs.
