If you are new to Crypto, my suggestion is that you start with buying ~$150 worth of Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin @ Coinbase and get familiar with storing it, moving it around, etc.

By sticking with large, reputable exchanges for your first purchase (Coinbase) and first trade (Binance) you can avoid getting scammed right at the start by purchasing a non-existing coin off a scammy exchange. (You would be surprised how many people fall into this trap)
Don't have a hardware wallet?
Be safe and buy them direct from the manufacturer. (Not just through some random on eBay, Amazon, etc)

Great tutorial, but I seem to be missing something. I have transferred from the exchange to the app wallet, and it shows up the correct amounts I have transferred. But does every transaction require you to connect to the mini, or is receiving into the app sufficient? Probably right under my nose, and I don't see it.

Only the app. Your hardware wallet has no knowledge of the balance of any accounts. (There are only a handful of devices that will sync/show a balance and they generally aren't very good devices...)

Haven't seed this but also don't use Ellipal as a daily driver. At worst it would normally be a case of the balance not being correct in their app, but the funds will still be there on their respective blockchains.

Are you asking about whether you should expect to see a balance on the Ellipal mini (you don't) or asking how to enable additional coins/chains? (Or are you just doing something like adding tokens that are on another chain that you have already enabled on the Ellipal?)

Just hit "Receive" for the coin/chain that you want to use. (I demo this for Bitcoin at the 4:20 mark, but the process is the same for every coin/chain)

Basically things like BTC and Doge will only show the first address, so you would need to send the fund to that one from your Ledger. The Ada balance probably won't appear at all. Eth and Matic should "just work" and the others you will just need to see.

You have to use a MicroSD card, not a USB stick

Basically all the English BIP39 words are unique based off their first for letters, so you only need to store the first four letters of each word.

Air gapped is meaningless if they don't have multisig....once you scan that QR code from the Titan into the app, that's an outgoing transaction and your public key is exposed.

Your public key being exposed isn't really an issue, never mind that their QR standard is open, so you can actually craft and broadcast your own transactions.. (The main issue with the Ellipal is that of address reuse)

@@CryptoGuide the public key being exposed may be overly paranoid but I was a bit shaken up by the mass wallet draining that happened a few weeks ago. Many of those wallets were 0x0 ETH wallets, cold wallets that never engaged in a transaction and several EVM chain wallets. Some of those wallets were also the wallets created during the IPO for Ethereum. Of course, this could be a false flag of sorts...There seemed to be a narrative following it about the virtues of multi-sig...of which many of the solutions are BTC only, but I digress. I still maintain ELLIPAL has pretty bad communication. 12-word seed generation is just not sufficient if you believe quantum computing and brute force advancements are going to be exponential in the near term. Are you concerned about the address reuse with Ellipal from an importing standpoint or re-using the Ellipal assist-created wallets with other manufacturers devices? Thanks for the in-depth coverage BTW. You are doing God's work.

Address reuse is mainly an issue that relates to privacy, not security as such. (Though anything EVM related has basically zero privacy anyway and reuses all addresses all the time by default) Ellipal certainly isn't great as far as communication goes and the wallet features are extremely basic, but for some people who want simplicity and a large screen, it isn't a terrible option.

Basically there connector has its own microcontroller thatsits between the MicroSD card, the power supply and the Ellipal, meaning that even if you put something malicious on the MicroSD card, or on the power supply, it wouldn't be able to directly exploit the Ellipal device itself.

Great review and demo. Problem with Ellipal app is that it is asking for this permission :" READ_PHONE_STATE read phone status and identity". and it contains 3 trackers built in.

The permissions on Android don't look particularly invasive, but this is certainly not the device for you if you want privacy. The interesting thing is that the seed generated with pre 1.1 firmware refused to work in their app anymore, even after being reinitialize on to a device running the newer firmware, on multiple different phones. This makes me think that they are either embedding some kind of version info in the seeds they generate (or that they faulty seeds had some common characteristics that were easy to spot) or logging information linking a given seed to a specific device.
