Many thanks brother. The survey of the blades and your thought process are so very valuable. I live in the NY area and have come to the same conclusions you have. It's great to hear your process for what you carry. Helps me think things through for my situations.

You have a good healthy blade philosophy. I read an article in SOF magazine back in my Marine Corps days (late '70's early '80's) titled 'The Three Knife Rule'. It explained the need for any soldier to have three blades. They recommended (1) a large knife 12 inch blade or longer, (2) a medium knife 4 to 6 inch blade, and (3) a small folder with a serrated blade. It was one of those articles that had a big influence on my thinking. It doesn't really transfer to wilderness survival, but it was a good foundation of thought. Imho, Zachary Fowler (Alone season 3 winner) put the shovel back where it belongs in the wilderness survival tool kit. I've carried the same Spetznaz shovel for over 15 years.

Say Heah, Yup, I love the 3Blade Rule. Infact one of my Fav's is my Rodent 5 my 17" Hultafors Bruks Agdor Hatchet and my Wicked Tough Saw. I also love my Modde Rodent 6, which I had modified and now it look's like a Ratmandu on steroids. Plus my Agawa Canyon 21 Boreal Saw and my 24" Council Wood Craft Pack Axe with the heavy duty sheath and sling. I love this set on overnighter's. But recently, I've been using my Cold Steel Sisu, my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet and my Wicked Tough Saw. I love knives so I have other gear I can easily make Basic Trio's or I can take multi tool carries like some of my Piggyback Carries, plus Hatchet, and Saw. I'm really enjoying these videos. Thanx You.,,. p

Very much agree with much of this. Although I do not care for tactical folders, too big for a pocket knife, and something that big I would want a fixed blade anyway. For a pocket knife, a simple jack knife works for me. Also, I do not like the mutitools. I have a couple sitting around, but if I need a pliers I go and get a pliers, same with a screwdriver and such. I live in Wisconsin, when out it the woods, I use a saw and axe for fire wood.

I think you actually just invented the 5-6 blade rule: Pocket knife; belt knife; saw; multi-tool (with at least 2 blades); and possibly a chopper. ;) Just yanking your chain - I enjoy your videos very much and like your designs too. 👌

My three would be medium sized belt knife, folding saw, and axe or hatchet. With that being said, i have a TOPS Brakimo Knife, Husqvarna 26" Multipurpose Forest Axe, Silky Big Boy 2000 XL Folding Saw, Leatherman Supertool 300 Multi Tool, and Cold Steel Spetznaz Shovel. That's the tools in my INCH bag/long term bug out bag.

Nice video thx! I am a knifemaker/collector for over 40 years now and I think that what you take along on a hike depends on the circumstance, the season, duration and the kind of trip you make. For edc I always carry a folder knife, one of my large collection...now a Ruike P105 Qfang, a victorinox farmer or Leatherman and one of my Olights or Fenix flashlights. For hiking I believe there is no 1 good system, a good Wetterlings of Gransfor axe, a saw, a Mora knife is always handy for small tasks, for a combination of machete/axe and big knife i use the terava skrama from Varusteleka.com, this skramaga is standard kit in the military in Finland and verry verry good allround knife/chopper/etc...Sometimes just for the kick as a knifeaddict i carry my Joker Bowie 25 with Crown Stag handle...cool old style ;-) Everybody has his own system and that is just the fun as knifelovers. Kind regards from the Belgian Ardennes and i subbed.

you seem to have a lot of woods experience... how many nights do you usually spend in the bush when you go out? Any vids of your adventures? I'd love to check them out and see how you use all these tools you carry and make camp. especially interested in your use of the chopper you carry. Thanks for this series of vids.

Good rule that 3 blade (or edge) rule and I live by it for a long time. I actually very recently did make a video of it and my approach is almost the same. My last resort knife is my SAK and that is inside my pocket attached to my trouser with a piece of string with some other items. It's my survival kit and if all goes well it never comes out. The second blade will be the food prep and whittling knife. I like that one not to big and sharp and where it must be able to do lite batoning I will not baton with it unless again in an emergency. The third blade can be a fixed small blade, larger blade, machete, ax or whatever that has a sharp but very strong edge for the rough work like batoning or chopping. It works and has worked for me.

So here's how I see it. I think it comes down to Location, Weather and Duration. For example, if I'm taking a 5 mile walk through a "Metro Park", it's a Water Bottle, Boo Boot Kit and a Folder, just in case of a Nasty Puppy or Two Legged Scumbag. During the Summer, Weekend trip through the Woods in Spring, Summer, Fall? Folder, Fixed Blade, Saw and Multi Tool. Running Trap Lines or Winter Hunting up Maine or Canada or Rockies? Same thing, have an Ax back at Camp. Or on the Snow Machine, Dog Sled, etc. Sorry, I'd rather have 6 pounds of Food in the Winter than 6 pounds of Steel, especially if I can Saw all the Firewood I need. YMMV, of course.
