I. love. this. scene. SO MUCH. XD I feel like the writers are nailing it in terms of realism. I totally understand Elena, not only is she still working through her broken relationship with Stefan, but Damon is kinda intimidating from a relationship perspective. He's just so INTENSE compared to Stefan - he will actually love her FOREVER. Their chemistry is waaaaay more adult and their relationship waaaaaay more complex/mature. And that's why it'll be that more awesome when she is ready!

It may sound weird but I'm glad they didn't kiss. Damon is not some "help-me-to-forget-my-ex" guy and Elena seems to know it quite well. Her feeling for him are stronger than that and I'm proud of her. Eventually she will admit her love for Damon; it's just like he sad... "it's right, it's just not right now". Loved this scene. I even love how Damon was not planning on kissing her, he was just stroking her face in a loving gesture and she says "you cant kiss me again" hahaha that was her subconscious talking for her and asking for a kiss and maybe even more. look at how sad, regretful, and yearning elena looks when she says 'you can't kiss me again.' she shakes her head before saying it to pull herself out of wanting him to. she's internally battling with wanting to kiss him when she says 'i ... can't. it's not right.' this scene is so underrated in a rare moment of elena showing that even at this point she really wanted to be with him, and was constantly battling doing what she wanted to do. it shows how much it hurt.

Caroline used her birthday/funeral wish on Elena, that's why Elena dies. 3x11 and 3x19 foreshadow everything. You get Elena's birthday in 3x1, Caroline's funeral/birthday in 3x11, then Elena's death in 3x22. That's why Klaus gives Caroline an infinity bracelet for her birthday. Because Elena saw "forever" on her birthday. "Think about that moment where you knew this person was somebody you had feelings for. That you loved. That you could see those feelings going on forever." That's why she tells Stefan she'll be with him forever IF she wants. She doesn't see forever with Stefan, but with Damon. Elena is forced to make two choices. One sooner and one later for right now and always. That's why she's on the bridge twice in 3x22. She crosses that bridge on her way to Damon, then ends up back on the bridge to drown. If she's not gonna continue driving to Damon, she's gonna die with his blood in her system. She's not supposed to make it home to Stefan because he's not her home.

Exactly what Rose says in the car in 3x19. Matt's not taking her home in 3x22 because her home is 100 miles out of town. Home is where the heart is... cue Elena's drowning. Damon is clearly the more sensitive brother. When he forced his blood on her it was bc he couldn't stand the thought of losing her. When Stefan did it, it was bc he wanted revenge. Every time Damon hurts her he shows immediate remorse. Stefan...nothing. Stefan gave her that necklace once. Damon has returned it to her like 5x now. He is always thinking of her feelings. He was turned by Stefan and forced into this life. Why doesn't anyone see how evil Stefan can be? Always saying Damon is bad.

Her head is telling her it's wrong, her heart is telling her it's right. 3x11 and 3x19 foreshadow Elena's death and transition. She doesn't just love Damon, she really loves Damon. That's why dialogues and ideas double-up. Alaric: Something is up with her. Elena. Something [more] than usual. Elena: Something's changed between Damon and me. Much [more] than it ever used to be. Her feelings for Damon were magnified before she became a vampire. She's consumed by it.

AND...Damon is still sticking up for his little brother. Even before the kiss he was defending Stefan to her. Stefan on the other hand is always bad mouthing Damon saying he has no humanity, she's better than him, Damon is evil. Stefan is not nearly as loyal as Damon is. Damon is the better man for saying things like his brother deserves her, but he doesn't. Poor Damon, loyal and loving to a fault. He has to cover that sensitive side with his alter ego or he'd be crushed by the ones he loves.
