Had a customer interested in 6.0 swapping his v6 silverado. I've had a lot of people ask if it can be done, is it worth it, what does it take? Well, we're going to find out together! Part 1 here we go.

Actual bolting it in is cake on these 2 motor mounts and tranny mount no sweat , i probably wouldve put the exhaust manifolds and a new cam and valve springs too before dropping it in...but i imagine your doing headers ? With the weight difference and likely deeper low rear gear you could probably run a btr stage 2 cam kit and she'd be super streetable with an easy 90+ hp gain so worth it. What about the computer ecm is that plug and play or is the wiring completely different for the v6 .. another reason I'd switch out cam and flash tune the ecm or at least budget for it
@MohawkMotors
@MohawkMotors 10 ай бұрын
yeah we did shorty headers. Didn't do cam or valve spring because he didn't have any room left in his budget at the time. ECM need to be programmed to recognize the new trucks VIN as it's own or have VATS deleted, wiring is mostly the same as far as connecting it to the truck.

I have a 2007 Classic 4.3, 2wd, and I'd love to do a swap. Only problem is, there's so many different opinions on what has to be done. I always heard motor mounts, fuel line adapter, and ecm reprogram. You say lots of other things need to be swapped too. I guess the easiest thing to do would be just to do it and figure it out for yourself.
@MohawkMotors
@MohawkMotors 2 жыл бұрын
You'll definitely need to change the motor mounts and reprogram the PCM, I don't think you'll need any fuel line adapters. You may need other parts also. It just depends on exactly what you are going to do and what level finished product you want. I suggest getting as much of the stuff that you'll definitely need as you can, then start, and get the stuff that comes up as you go.

I'm sure you could swap a v8 from that generation truck into it. As far as cost or time to do it? I have no idea. Estimating off my limited knowledge of that platform, I would expect to pay at least $4,000 for a complete pull out engine assembly, probably another $8,000 to $10,000 to pay someone to actually do the swap. If they were experienced they could probably do it in a month or so.

I have a few questions as I am looking to do this swap as well... Can you use just the plumbing for the cooling system instead of swapping the radiator? Same as the AC components, I know on a 5.3 swap all you need is the plumbing for the cooling and AC system. Do you have to use the donor fuse box or can you just plug the harness into the original one? Do you need a new ECM or can you just have the V6 ECM tuned?
@MohawkMotors
@MohawkMotors 21 күн бұрын
Yes you can re-use the V6 radiator and the V6 Condenser and evaporator. Most of the AC lines and the Coolant lines are different though, you will need the V8 lines and hoses. You can use the v6 fuse panel as well, you just need to be aware of the differences in the fuse panels between years 99 to 02, 03 to 05, 06 and 07 classic. Some V6 pcms are capable of running the v8, some are not, it depends on which operating system it has, some operating systems are not compatible with V8 programming.

You can make any gen 3 6.0 work, but the easiest way to do it, will be to find one from the same year truck, 2000. A 2001 or even a 2002 would work also and be relatively easy swap. In part 2 I touch on this and in part 3 coming next week I go much farther into depth.

@MohawkMotors
@MohawkMotors Жыл бұрын
If you can get an LQ4 from 01 or 02 it'll be plug and play bolt right in. LQ9 only came as drive by wire, but would still be an easy swap, just put the intake manifold from your 4.8 on the LQ9 and get the correct oil pressure sensor. Otherwise everything bolts up the same.

What about the driveshaft? Custom made? Or the stock from shortbed truck?
@MohawkMotors
@MohawkMotors 2 жыл бұрын
We have a couple options, the stock driveshaft necks down from 3.5 inches diameter for most of the length to 2.75 inches on the ends. The driveshaft out of the 2500HD donor truck is 3.5 inches the entire length. Once I have it all buttoned up and can measure for length, I'm really hoping that the longer 4l80e is long enough that we can shorten the original 4l60e driveshaft to the 3.5" diameter portion, and weld in the 4l80 yoke. That would be the simplest and least expensive option, and out would place the "fuse" at the axle yoke where a driveshaft loop and be easily added

Yeah it's possible, you'll need to decide how you want to do the transmission shifter. A console style shifter would probably be the easier route but you could swap in an automatic column and have column shift also. Swapping the engine would be the same, you'll just have to decide how you wanna do your transmission stuff.

As long as it's the same generation engine, it's plug and play. the ONLY differences you could encounter in the 99 to 06 truck engines could be oil pressure sensor (99 to 02 use single wire, 03 to 06 use 3 wire), throttle (either drive by wire or drive by cable), and injectors (flex fuel 5.3's use a different injector connector than the non flex fuel 5.3's and 6.0's)

Are you meaning to do it yourself? If you're resourceful you could do it for free. I swapped one of my own trucks from a 4.3 V6 to a L33 5.3 V8 and actually profited. I bought a crashed donor truck that had everything I needed for the swap and sold what I didn't need. I sold the parts I didn't need for more than I paid for the entire donor truck, used some of the proceeds from selling what I didn't need to buy new parts (new motor mounts, motor mount brackets, a new transmission mount), and still have my engine, harness, and everything else I needed to convert my truck to V8.

@MohawkMotors

Depends on where you are and how they check. If they actually check under the hood, it'll be difficult to pass since most people can tell the difference between a V6 and a V8 by looking at them, although some can't. If it's only a plug in check, then you can program the V8 computer to match the VIN of the truck and shouldn't have any issues as long as everything is functioning correctly. It just depends on how the inspection is done.

Do you have to change the radiator/ condenser if your doing the swap with out cooling fans ??
@MohawkMotors
@MohawkMotors Жыл бұрын
no, the core supports are all the same, they all have the bolt bosses for electric fans and for the mechanical fan shroud. The radiator and condenser are not affected by which fan setup you use, mechanical or electric.

around how much $$ for this to be done ?
@MohawkMotors
@MohawkMotors 2 жыл бұрын
price can vary, if you can do it yourself it could probably be done for under $1500, if you are going to pay someone like me I would say expect to pay at least $3000 + parts

hello again Mohawk Motors!! i wanted to follow up on a reply that you gave me a few months back! i forgot to ask you a question? how do i remove the Vats on my computer swap on my 2005 Avalanche ECM to my 2003 Chevy Silverado truck ECM? reason that i am back is because i am trying to install the electric fans from the Avalanche to the Silverado truck. with the fans wiring harness out of the avalanche. do i really need to swap the computers? thanks man for all your help!!!
@MohawkMotors
@MohawkMotors Жыл бұрын
There are several ways to remove VATS, I use HP tuners, but you can also use other softwares (PCM Hammer is one I;ve heard of) In ho tuners you have to buy credits to unlock a pcm but there are other ways that are free, I just don;t have experience with them. Check out The Driveway Engineer yoututbe channel, he has covered multiple ways to unlock a GM PCM.

Is it worth swapping a 4.8 to a 6.0?
@MohawkMotors
@MohawkMotors 2 жыл бұрын
That's kind of a personal decision. Going from a 4.8 to a 6.0 would be easy, all you need is a 6.0 short block, swap all your 4.8 parts onto it, heads, intake, etc. And then bolt it back together. Then get get a 6.0 tune put into the computer. All that considered though, is it worth the money and effort to you, for the increases/decreases that come with the 6.0?
@MohawkMotors
@MohawkMotors 2 жыл бұрын
If I had a blown up 4.8, I absolutely would replace it with a 6.0
@UndefinedAz
@UndefinedAz 2 жыл бұрын
Awesome thank you for your feedback. I think I might just build the 4.8 with bolt ons to get more hp to push the 35” tires

That 2500 looks decent, should just repair that 3/4 ton 4x4 super cab by selling the worthless v6, 2wd , dinky cab , short bed polished turd truck

The 2500's frame was bent and had a salvage title, plus being 2wd it wasn't worth fixing, just a good drivetrain donor.

@MohawkMotors
@MohawkMotors 5 ай бұрын
@@knkmphd understandable. Even though it's not a terribly complex job to do if you know what you're doing, it does take time to do a nice job so I'm not surprised shops want a premium price to do it. It also technically could be considered emissions tampering if you live somewhere that is picky about vehicle emissions. All that said, if you have the tools and equipment, you could do this swap in the street with a engine hoist and a pair of jack stands over the weekend. Could at least get it far enough along that it looks complete and keeps the HOA off your case if you have one.
