Nathan, great video. Thanks for posting this! I'm about to do this on my Explorer V8. There is an aftermarket tool for about $30 or so that is designed to remove those pesky factory hose clamps. It is designed to fit into those "hard to reach" places. Best $30 I have ever spent. Also the tool to remove the fan clutch from the water pump is about $25 at most auto parts stores. I just bought one and have used it now and then. Since you are draining the coolant from the radiator, now would be an excellent time to replace the lower and upper radiator hoses. Also, if you plan on reusing the same radiator hoses, you should put the factory hose clamp in the exact same position it was in before. You will notice the hose will have marks on the end of it where the clamp was. If you don't put the clamp back in the exact same position you risk a leak. Of course if you install new hoses then you can use whatever clamps you want. I prefer the "band style" clamps as they are easier to remove but the factory ones work really well too. For the 4 bolts that hold the housing to the engine block, the torque spec is 20 lbs/ft. Also, what was the part # to that Fel Pro gasket you used? Thanks again.

Thanks for the tips. I just did this on a 2003 Ford Explorer 4.6. My case, I had to remove the tire. But there is no need to remove the radiator shroud and fan. Only took about an hour to do, Hardest part is lining the mount back up with the gasket. It is a dirty job all around.

Watch the video, I just found there was no need to remove rad shroud and fan. You can get at it from underneath. Take your time with it, it is a very messy job depending on how much oil has leaked out already.

good video brother I'm doing mine at the moment likewise I found no videos on the mountaineer 4.6 lots on 46 mustangs and what not but no comparison as far as tight places to get to due to the AWD .My clamp was on like yours backwards I didn't even think about disconnecting the hose all together and pulling it out with the unit nor did I pull the fan and guard it appeared that gave a lot more access to remove the filter itself I often fight with mine when doing oil changes so hey thank you the videos I've watched about all the ones you have made and learned a great deal as well as new ideas to try myself the best to you and thanks again

@FixingWithPassion8 жыл бұрын
Na...Its ok to do it without draining the oil. There will be some oil loss. Just recheck the oil level when done.
@JR-kr1lv6 жыл бұрын
Change your oil everytime you replace stuff that could get junk into oil now, theirs holes in the engine block and junk can get in their or in the piece, then goes threw oil, I would change oil because I'm putting a new filter on, new oil will go in with it so I can check out the entire system, don't want bad oil now, some garages will reset the oil light but its at 50% used, so like my truck, it shows the % of oil or i change it after 6 months max, also change before winter every year, you seem to let vehicles idle more and that's not good for your engine. Most people don't know this but for every hour your engine idles, add 33 miles to dashboard, so if see a police cruiser with low miles for sale, well they average about 4 hours of idle time per shift, not good, my brother in-law maintained fleet as being the one to order what they needed, he retired at 50 years old as a Captain of his POLICE Force. Started at 18 and went to COLLEGE to learn laws. Auto starts are nice but not good for engine, best to install a block heater and run a cord to vehicle, then it keeps oil and antifreeze warm, you will have heat quicker in winter time.
@LA_Commander3 жыл бұрын
Randall, it would be prudent to change the oil and filter when doing this repair. Not only does oil leak from this worn gasket, but coolant leaks, too. The oil may in fact be contaminated with coolant, and vice versa. When you remove the filter housing you may spill some coolant into the engine oil. Since oil is cheap and you are changing out the coolant anyway, go ahead and replace the oil and filter while doing this. Now would also be a great time to replace the lower and upper radiator hoses.
