I ended up replacing spark plugs in my Moms 09 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 4.7 V8 Engine due to a misfire code. I had got a socket stuck in the side of the engine in the spark plug hole because I didn't use a correct thin wall socket for the 4.7 V8.
After a lot of brainstorming I ended up getting some locking extensions to help remove the stuck socket. This could be repeated for the top also, but would need to use a string to hold the lock ring on the extension back till it inserted in the stuck socket. Then I got the correct sockets to finish the job.
The Coil boot on these 4.7 V8 engines seem to get stuck to the spark plugs easily and cause the boot to break when removing the coil pack. The method I use to remove the coil pack boot is to stick a small flat blade screwdriver down on the edges of the hole and use it to cut the stuck rubber boot on the sides. Then I try to loosen the stuck coil boot some more and then remove it with a pick.
When reinstalling the coil pack its best to use some form of dielectric grease to coat the inside of the coil pack boot to prevent it from sticking again. Also I've learned the spring stays in place better if you install the spring into the coil before installing the boot. You can buy just coil boots from autozone and napa. I put the Autozone links at the very bottom. The duralast set is the best value, but they also have NGK too.

Thank you so much for this information! I have a 2008 Grand Cherokee with the 4.7 and when I went to change the plugs I quickly discovered it might be the most frustrating and maddening job I've ever attempted. I tried several "thin walled" sockets with no success and got one stuck as well. Bought the 6" which worked fine for a few and now waiting for the shorter one to arrive so I can hopefully get the rest done.

Hey no problem, and You're welcome. Yea Good Luck it's a very hard job for just changing spark plugs. The ones on the side are really a pain... Sounds like you got everything under control but If you run into any problems and need any help just let me know.

This video was extremely helpful! Bought the tools you recommended. I did this job while changing my valve cover gaskets, which made it easier, but had its own problems. Luckily only had one boot that broke off in the tube, was on one of the cylinders closer to the front of the engine.

Oh nice... Glad it was all helpful for you. Yea that is good luck with only one boot breaking.

Darn saw this to late. But I am going to get a set of locking extensions for future changes. Great idea.

Yea, they can come in handy and saved me with that stuck socket. Definitely worth the money.

Great info brother. On the dialectic grease just put glob on inside of boot and when you put in new plug run it through the blob point 1st, it will coat the end well (I know real technical right) but it will work fine I haven't had any issues in 30 years).

Thanks, that’s good to hear. I don’t have that much experience with dielectric grease, so cool to hear that it has a good track record for you.

I have a 2011 Dakota that is WAY overdue for spark plugs and after just trying to find the lower plugs on the passengers side I really, really don't want to do this because everything always seems to go wrong for me. On the other hand I just can't bring myself to pay over half a grand to have the dealer replace spark plugs - what a ripoff! I do have a question though, aside from getting the plugs out, how hard is it to get them back in without cross-threading them? There is pretty much no room on a few of them and I am really concerned about getting the plugs back in.

Yea it’s quite the job. I think getting them back in should be no problem. Just start them by hand, hold the extension etc. If you can start them with hand tightening and they feel good, then everything should be good.

@@DesertRatRacer Thanks for the reply. I'm going to wait until Spring when it warms back up. I thought of trying the tough ones first so I can get all of my cussing out of the way early. 😆 At my age I really should have the dealer do it but I just hate the thought of getting ripped off just for spark plugs.

@@Pro1er no problem, just make sure to get the slim socket especially for the sides like I talk about. Getting the socket stuck was really bad.

@@DesertRatRacer I was looking at a thin-wall socket on Amazon with a built-in swivel for $8, I'll probably go with that.

@@Pro1er ok that might be good, but I remember it being so tight in few spots I’d need to insert / remove the socket by itself… then add / remove the short extension. So might be good having the little extra, but might also be cramped to put in socket / swivel at once. Have a few options would be good though.

Other than the air box, did you remove the battery, wire harness’ and such on the drivers side to access the exhaust side plugs down there? I’m about to do this soon.

I moved the evap lines over a bit, didn’t unplug anything just pulled from mount. Also pulled a front wire harness from the mount by the valve cover to just give a little more wiggle room. For the front two on the drivers side I had to kinda use both hands to get in there. Tried to go more from the side than straight down.

@@DesertRatRacerThat’s pretty much what I’m seeing that looks best. I purchased both sockets before watching this video so that’s a plus! Knocking this and a water pump/flush out in a day. Thanks!

@@adamlandy7253 oh like with the 09 Cherokee if is has a tow package it has a manual fan plus the electric fan if I remember right. Then uses a bar with pins in it to remove the standard fan. If just the electric fan than nothing special is needed.

Is the 09 jeep 4.7 engine is it the same as 2004 Durango 4.7
@DesertRatRacer

There is some differences the 08+ has 16 spark plugs where the 04 has 8. The 08+ requires the thin wall spark plug socket, where I think the 04 can use a standard spark plug socket, but I'm not 100% on that. The 08+ 4.7 has higher compression and different cylinder heads for sure. Those are the main differences I know right off.

Montego update?
@DesertRatRacer

Have a few other videos that are recorded and working on now but not sure when I'll have the Montego update. Been helping my dad a lot with stuff so I'll have another 9in rebuild video, also we T-5 Swaped a Flathead, etc.. Currently looking for parts for the Montego... I mostly need a clutch and flywheel setup, a mustang hydroboost setup, and sheet metal, etc.... I'm looking to fund some of that with another parts car that I'm getting soon. I should get a bunch of parts for a galaxie and be able to sell the rest and recoup some money to use with the montego.
