Flushing out a CLI-42 can be done very simply or very elaborate. Simple is just letting a stream of warm water from the faucet aimed at the fill hole and just let it do its thing.
Or you can force water through with a syringe.
Others have made pressurized contraptions and can mass flush a few dozen carts in just a few minutes.
We will use the two most simplest methods.
Stubborn ink stains left behind can be cleared out by flushing with Windex and letting it sit for an hour followed with a few quick pushes on 60ml warm water each!
Can the now infamous Yellow Cart be flushed and reused?
Yes.
Watch how it's done.

My Canon Pro 100 should be in in a few days... Ive been doing as much research as I can on it and there is one thing in particular that I'm appreciating... You. You have done an amazing job to be informative and take over the world of youtube when it comes to the pro100. I deeply appreciate it and already have inks ordered and doing whatever research I can so I can get the most out of my printer. This is the channel to watch to do it.

Hi all, I'm in the UK and don't think we can purchase Windex here. Has anyone else in the UK found a replacement we can get over here? Jose - if the carts are flushed with water only and some ink is left in the sponge (just staining), will they still work properly when refilled or will the staining present a risk to the correct operation? Thanks :-)

Hi Joe!! Just modified & refilled my first set of canon OEM cartridges with precision colors ink.. it went smoother than I expected.. however, drilling the holes with the 5/32" drill bit (on my OEM cli-42 cartridges) still left a few flakes of plastic residue in two of the cartridges that i couldn't get out--I am hoping these small fragments of plastic won't be problematic. I have a question (besides the comment about tiny pieces of plastic that got left in the cartridge while modifying them).. When you are totally flushing out the cartridges (as in the above video), is it ok to leave the canon chips on the cartridges? I think I see chips on the cartridges you're washing out (and I will be flushing my OEM yellow cartridges at some point).. I am assuming they are working chips on these cartridges that you will be resetting, and that the flushing/washing process doesn't damage them. ?? If you can clarify for me, I'd appreciate it. ~Christine

Hi, im really newby to home printing! Ordered my pro 100 and it is on its way! I,m just trying to learn before it comes. thank you so much for sharing. have a question: Shouldn't it affect the chip just being submerged under the water for so long? Since we pulled up a cartridge out of the printer, is it safe to be without one for a longer period? If not, how much i would have? Thank you so much! Regards

I got a pack of the 60 ml syringes on Amazon and of course they are too big to fit into the 5/32 in opening. I saw where you suggested a smaller syringe. I also see that there seems to be a snug fitting extension on the syringe you use in the video. Are they available ? or do I have to get another set of syringes?

You probably baught either Catheter or the threaded type syringes. Plain tipped syringes is what you need. I use a tip on mine. But a tip will not fix the problem if the syringes has a large tipmsuch as the cathetter type. Contact www.precisioncolors.com to see if the have a tip for the 5/32" hole.

I'm having a hard time finding the proper syringes. I purchased some from Amazon that were 60 ml and didn't say "leuer" tip. They have a tapered round tip but the end is too large to fit into the small hole in the CLI-42 cart (the one where the ball was removed and then drilled out with a 5/32" drill.) Most of the syringes on Amazon, like the ones I bought, say "catheter" syringes. I can't tell from the pictures which ones have a small enough tip to fit into the CLI-42 hole. Do you have a specific brand/model you can recommend?

It is a 60 ml. Amazon and eBay sells them. The bigger the better. They come in plain tip which perfectly fits the fill hole of the cart! Mine is a leuer end syringe so I needed to screw on a plain tip adapter. So get a Plain tipped syringe and you will not need any tip adapter like I bad to use. Inkjetmall.com has plain tipped 60 ml syringes.

With respect to yellow cartridges you recommend Windex (with ammonia) Do you have a view on using, say, a 5% ammonia solution as in the UK believe it or not it is easier to buy ammonia than it is to get Windex with ammonia. As a fountain pen user I use ammonia to remove stubborn ink from components when restoring pens, therefore I have a fairly plentiful supply.

Our Windex also has a soap or surfactant so if you could buy window cleaner and add ammonia to it that should work. Just make sure to NOT flush with water first.

@@cheo1949 For any UK enthusiasts who are thinking about buying from Octoinkjet. They sell genuine remanufactured cartridges filled with their latest dyes. They cost around £32 for a set of 8. I have bought one set plus 2 extra yellows. That way I can modify my existing OEM cartridges with the exception of the yellows, which I intend to send to Octoinkjet for them to reuse. This takes nothing away from the excellent products provided by Precision Colors but shipping to the UK is rather convoluted at the moment.

Hello Jose, today I received a full set of used CLI-42 cartridges. Because it looked like the ink was pretty dry I proceeded to flush them utilizing your Windex technique. All 8 cartridges came out perfect with the exception of the Photo Cyan cartridge which still has a very slight cyan tint. One thing I noticed while I was flushing is that the label was mostly removed on the Photo Cyan cartridge, so water was leaking from the entire top of the cartridge. Is this an issue ? If so can I just put a strip of tape on the top to salvage the cartridge ? Thank you for all your videos....very educational.

Once they are brought to fully dry condition that vent will be free of water. Always fill them so they self balance themselves at no less than 1/6" from the top of the liquid chamber. Don;t just count on my videos but also watch the videos on the precisioncolors web site concerning point to look out for. Keep in mind we DO NOT guarantee any of this. Refilling is the choice of the user and so it is your responsibility to perform the process correctly so you have a successful expereience.

@@cheo1949 Thank you Jose, I just wanted to make sure that by not having the label on the top and having the vent completely open that it didn't cause any ink flow issues. BTW, I tried this drying method and it seemed to work well. After flushing the cartridges with water I placed one cartridge at a time with the sponge opening facing on top of the nozzle of my wet/dry shop vac. I did not seal off the entire opening of the shop vac nozzle as not to create an extreme vacuum in the cartridge causing the black hole effect. I was able to get the weight from 20 grams to 14.7 grams, they will be sitting on a sunny window sill till it weights between 13.5 and 13.8 grams .

What th mistake is that most folk start with water. That causes the immediate reaction. You can use regular non ammonia window cleaner and just add about 5% ammonia is you can get it from the druggist or other source. Begining with an ammonia based cleaner immediately breaks down the ink out of the sponge so that simple water flushing easily finishes the job.

Jose, in preparation to refill my Pro-100 cartridges I've watched most (maybe all) of your great KZbin videos covering the process. I was about to place my order at Precision Color when I saw a note in their Pro-100 refill section under the tab "Instructions". The note from May 2013 is titled "Important information on refilling Canon CLI-42 yellow cartridge" in which it states, "We now simply recommend that you discard the Canon CLI-42 Yellow cartridge when it empties and DO NOT REFILL IT..." This quote is part of a full page of information about the issue. Is this valid or should I use your method of flushing an OEM yellow cartridge for use with PC yellow ink? PC includes one flushed cartridge for yellow in their kits but will not sell a second flushed cartridge. In order to have a second full set of cartridges as you recommend should I buy an OEM (not yellow) color cartridge, flush it, and swap out the chip from an OEM yellow cartridge, then fill it with PC yellow?
@cheo1949

Use their replacement yellow flushed cartridge. It takes about a week to dry a flushed cartridge so it can be refilled. You will need your original yellow chip to install on the replacement cart. It's best to simply buy a set of already mid and flushed carts from the EBAY link you find in my video descriptions. The you can not and flush yours at your convenience.

Is it absolutely necessary that after the flushing the carts should be 100% clear and that after that one must flush the carts with alcohol and the with glycerin? You said somewhere that it's possible to refill OEM carts with PC inks even when they are not empty. I tried to flush my carts but they are still not 100% clear. Also I haven't found the needed alcohol and glycerin.
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 7 жыл бұрын
NO. Just top them off with the PC inks when you reach low. The only one you will not do that with is the YELLOW one. You be given a flushed and ready to fill CLI-8 cart. Fill it with the PC yellow and transfer the OEM, CLI-42 Yellow chip to it. From at that point on you are top top off all the carts as needed or all at once. Reset as you top off. Do not ever reset and forget to top off. You do not want to have a cart physically go empty and the chip reporting it "has Ink" in the cart. That would KILL your print head.

Jose Rodriguez you also told before that it's good to have two sets of carts, so that one could replace them for a refill all at once. I wanted to follow your advice. I have 8 OEM carts in my printer, some of them will be empty soon. I was going to refill them with PC inks as you wrote to me here above. Another set of refilled carts I wanted to make with already empty OEM cats that I have. I flushed them with the distilled water and a window cleaner (not a Windex but also with ammonium) but the carts are still a little colored. Can I refill them being in such state or already empty carts must be 100% clean and then flushed with alcohol and then with the glycerin mixture? I don't have the alcohol you mentioned nor the glycerin either. As for the yellow cart, I know the problem. I was going to use one of the carts that was flushed out better than others (BK or LG).

Sponges a bit colored will do no harm. Go ahead and prepare one set and when you get the first low warning on the set that is in the printer SWAP it completely and and then modify the set you just removed. DO NOT let them reach empty. You will have problems with AIR Foam in the sponge!!!!! Modify, reset and top them off as a set. when then FIRST one goes LOW. DO not worry about mixing inks except for the yellow of course. Once you have two sets going then as soon as the first low warning hits. Open the top cover and swap the complete set for the other one and continue doing this from that point on. Rest the carts before you top them off to prevent spills as you will have to have the bottle exit port clip removed during resetting.

It's great, thank you! I hope next week I'll be already trying the PC inks myself. Thank you very much once again for your help, Jose! (And, please, don't forget to think over about the 480-patch calibration :) As for now, have I understood it correctly that the Canon calibration utility is better overall than the ColorMunki Photo's software?)

hi Jose, I'm kinda confused. I understand flushing yellow cart is necessary to avoid that jellow problem. why are you flushing other carts of ink, I thought we can mix precision color ink with remaining Canon ink in the carts except for yellow.
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 8 жыл бұрын
The carts were used up completely. The sponges were full of air. And they were all dried up! That is what you get from eBay and you must flush them. If you are beginning with your own carts then you can mod and fill them as they go LOW. Never empty. Just top off with PC inks. The yellow needs to be either extremely well flushed with windex as I show, or replaced with another flushed cart as suggested. So in short when you start from empty dried carts, you must flush!

Hi Jose. I've flushed my YELLOW CLI-42 with three one hour soakings of Windex and flushed with tap water, and then with Distilled Water. The sponge looks absolutely pristine WHITE .... OR DOES IT ????? It looks snow white and uniform when looking down at it ... but when I hold it up to an intense light source and shine light through the sponge, I see hints of yellow tint (mainly at the sponge seam where it changes density). I never would have noticed any YELLOW if I wasn't OCD and didn't hold it up to the light. I checked one of the flushed CLI-8 from PrecisionColors and see there is also some yellow tint. Am I worrying too much? I've got the dry weight down to 13.74g ... will see if it drops anymore. Thank you, Sir !!

Jose, while pushing down on the refill hole plug after filling a cartridge, some ink came out the top air vent (through the serpentine channels) due to air pressure. Might this eventually cause an inkflow problem when the ink that got into the serpentine channels dries up? (I've learned from now on to keep my finger over the air vent when pushing down on the refill hole plug).
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 7 жыл бұрын
That can happen if filled beyond 3/4 or higher. You will not believe how people solve that. The literally VERY carefully blow into the serpentine vent directly with their mouth touching the cart. You might end up with a cyan lip if not careful.

In this case, "Most" is not good enough. The yellow sponge needs to be Pristine white! So do another Windex soak for one hour and then flush again.

The question remains, why does Canon use a yellow solvent ink in conjunction with an otherwise all water based system.
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 6 жыл бұрын
Quite simple. Because it does not fade as easily as water based yellow. Yellow is weak link in the whole fading debacle.well, also photo black just not as bad. That's what makes the new Canon inks for the PRO100 unbeatable! Switch to anything else and longevity drops to about 10% that of OEM. I can live with that it I am saving 15x but I have ways to extend the print life span so I am not too worried.

No use Windex with ammonia. If you can not find it. Look for a similar Blue Clear type window cleaner that contains some ammonia. It is the Ammonia that will fully dissolve the remnant Yellow dye ink from the sponge.

No. WIndex is an American Window / Glass Cleaner. It is a clear blue liquid. It contains .5% Ammonia which makes it perfect to clean and dissolve Dried Ink which often is the cause of Print Head Clogs and it is also great for flushing CANON Sponge Carts. Then followed by water flushing.
