We did this with our now 15 month old & seeing a video from you is so validating!! I had PPD & PPA and was the only mom in our circles who didn’t sleep train - I had many awful moments of intense self doubt and anxiety so it’s so nice to watch this video and feel the extra peace of mind that I still did right by my baby! (First time mom).

One thing I sort of intuitively did with my son when he was ~6 months+ was as soon as we woke up we'd look at the morning sun 🌞 (not *directly* of course) but to set our circadian rhythm and he has always been such a champion sleeper! ✨ It might be worth a try for other mamas

My observation for good sleep is to have a transition routine not only for night sleep but also for naps. I started putting my baby in the crib with a quiet music toy above her before she has started showing signs for being tired. She would continue to play with it for a while and than fall asleep with no additional help or sucking anything. My baby is exclusively breastfed but I never use that as a way to calm her for a nap.

Ive been doing a schedule since month 4 and he sleeps great. He is like mama, likes consistency lol and once our routines became really consistent then he felt comfortable in the space and that mom would respond, then i was able to set him down and give him a kiss and then leave the room. But if he cries at all then i stay with him and i think that creates a sense of trust. He is 5 months. And naps 3 hours total. I can be more flexible with the two morning naps 3-45 min naps, 1 -1.5 hr nap then 1 -45min nap in either order. But I noticed that the last nap is key for a good bedtime (in the case that i have to have him in bed by a certain time so i can work) he goes to sleep easy if he is awake 2.5 hours before bed. Any shorter than that he will be nursing for like an hour. Also if he sleeps in for somereason, like til 7am instead if 6:30 then i count it out from one of his naps of the day. I try to continue the other naps as similar as usual. It seems to work. I know the wake windows work for him. It was a weird transition at first but after a week maybe his body was used to it and suddenly he was taking 1 less nap

This seems much more realistic and less draining then sleep training. I am a second time mom, my son is 4 weeks and my daughter is 6. With my first I sleep trained her, letting her cry it out... it worked but it was hard to do mentally and emotionally and everytime she got sick it would ruin the whole training we did. And she got sick a lot (mostly after vaccinations) so we would have to sleep train again and again. This time I'm doing it different. I'm not to worried about sleep training, I know my son will get on a schedule eventually and besides they grow SO fast, I'm embracing it all much more this time around.

My baby is 17 months and she still needs the breast to sleep at nap time and bedtime. It's a sleep association I don't know how to break kindly (I couldn't bear not giving her my breast and have her cry for me so don't know what to do, would break my heart to let her cry). Like I can't just sit up and breastfeed her and then get up and put her down for a nap when she's done, it doesn't work, I have to lie down next to her in bed and she breastfeeds until she's done and then turns around and sleeps.

Thanks Emma for sharing the tips! My 18MO used to be the best sleeper up until a few months ago when she suddenly decided that she didn't want to be alone at night. I had to sleep next to her ever since but I felt like we kept waking up each other at night.. I didn't want to try crying out again because now she knows everything and I don't want her to feel super insecure. I also heard from all my other friends with toddlers eventually ended up with bed sharing because they just climb up to your bed at night 🤣. Posting here to see if it's the same story for other parents and any tip to improve sleep quality 🥲

I keep having family pout at the fact that I've trained my baby to sleep in a dark room with a noise machine during the day for every nap. It's been key to extending those naps and avoiding an overtired baby. It obviously means we always have to leave early and stick to a schedule. They say that I should train my baby to sleep in noisy and lit up environment but it never seemed right to me.

If the cycle is reset every morning, from where do we start to count the total hours of sleep per day? From the night when they fall asleep until the next night or from the morning they wake up until the next morning? Hi @Dana it can be so hard and tiring waking up frequently during the night and then starting the day at 5am. I have a video on early morning wakes which breaks down the steps to helping your little one move their wake up time to later. Here is the link in case you want to watch it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIqniJ95mJdmZpo Also if your little one is 2 years or older a training clock can be extremely helpful. These clocks visually show when it is time to get up. So for example, at night the clock face might be a picture of a star and then at 7am (or whatever time you set the clock to) it changes to a sun. This visual representation can really help toddlers understand when they need to go back to sleep and when it is ok for them to get up. I hope that helps!

My baby never took naps longer than 30 minutes despite trying nearly everything! Finally when she was down to 1 nap she started taking longer naps. She wouldn’t sleep longer than 10 hour nights. And now she’s 3 and will take 2 hour naps if she’s in need of more sleep. So it could just be baby is getting enough nighttime sleep. Even if it seems low, baby may just be a low sleep need child. My daughter is 5 months old and barely sleeps at all. I’ve tried so much to train her into a routine and I fail dismally. She's hyperactive but fussy. She can't sleep without being breastfed,even while napping. Her naps are usually 30 minutes in a space of 3 hours. At night, I bathe her at 19:00 to prepare her for bedtime but she'll only wake up in an hour then she'll sleep around 23:00 and wakes up at 5 am for her "snack" then sleeps again. I'm constantly exhausted because of this inconsistency. Any tipps would be appreciated.

I cosleep with my little one until they were about 6 months. And started to give them time in there baby bed. And when they’d be ready for a nap. I’d hold them till they were asleep or tired and put them to bed. And go to them when they wake up. Typically I’d count the yawns and eye rubs. It’s definitely hard. But even when they’d sleep in there bed. And woke up I’d soothe them over the bed. So I’d sit or stand near by and pat them back to sleep. I did mine I guess hard way. Which I wish I started earlier rather than later but yeesh. I’m just happy he sleeps through the night now. And takes naps. At least 2 a day. Which have finally reached an hour 30. It’s changed a bit lately since he is now almost 11 months old. Tends to stay awake longer.

It was a nightmare when my son went to daycare and could not fall asleep since the environment was not "optimal" like home (dark, cool, noisemaker). I am doing differently with my now 5 months old because I cannot set her for "failure" of not being able to sleep at school once the time comes. The teachers have very little patience with the kids who do not nap and expect them to stay in their cot for the whole 2 hours nap window. Tell that to a 2 year old.

Thankyou Emma for this video. My 6 month old is breastfed and we have recently started her on purees a couple of weeks ago. She normally does well with her day naps..sleeping usually between 1-3 hours each time. Her night routine has gone out of whack the last week though! :( no matter what I do, she still gets up like a newborn every 2 hours...she went from sleeping up to 6 hours through the night to honestly just not sleeping. She has been teething...but ironically seems to sleep slightly better when her teeth hurt. I don't understand how to get her sleeping through the night again. Please help! XD

I don't know how to improve my baby's sleep... She will wake up every night many times. If it is good night, she might wake up only 5 times, if it is bad night it maybe 20 times. I have had constant 3 hour sleep last time maybe begin of December. Constant 5 hours, I think never. And my baby is now 5 month old. I am sooo tired. I have watched your every video about sleeping. I tried so hard... She sleeps during the day 30 min in the morning (bed), 3-3,5 hours during mid-day (outside) and 30 min (bed) in the afternoon. She will go to sleep 7.30 pm and unfortunately wake up before 5 am. So the bedroom is dark, it is colder than rest of the house (below 20 degree), she has white noice, bed time routines have been the same/almost the same for last month and she will go to her bed as sleep but awake. Her night time routines includes bath, diaper change, clothes change, eating, being up for 20 min (because of reflux), baby massage, going to bedroom, pacifier to mouth, holding her until she feel sleep, putting to bed, holding hands top of her until she is almost a sleep (she will continue "talking" after I remove my hands) and leaving the room (she is sleeping in the same room as us). But still she will wake up many, many times. And usually she will wake up 30 to 40 min after falling a sleep. Sometimes crying and sometimes screeming. Usually I wait for a moment before going to bedrooom and but the pacifier back (it usually helps but not always). I really don't know what to do more. I would really, really need that even 3 hours of constant sleep during the night.

How do you sleep train a toddler/more than 12 months old?
@ngerstner753

My struggle with getting into a routine is having an older child. So my baby might sleep until 630 every morning if she wasn't interrupted. But she sleeps in my room right now, and my 3 year old is often up by 530, sometimes 6, and comes and wakes us up. Then I have to leave to get her to school at 815, so I'm unable to get the baby a decent nap until I'm home around 9. So the day just sort of starts bad. Then I pick up my toddler at 1pm, so that can often cause problems with naps. Very frustrating. I feel like my baby is getting very overtired and not sure how to deal.

Hi Jen! For some kids they can be more sensitive to noise, movement, visual input or touch (this is normal as we all have sensory preferences). If they are showing you that they are tired,you can try and make it easier for them to fall asleep by reducing or masking these sensations. So for example lowering the pram shade might help to block some of the visual distractions and help them fall asleep. If you think this might help your little one, make sure you don't cover the pram completely and there is some air flow as covered prams can become very hot. With my daughter it was the noise of the busy environment which stopped her falling asleep in the pram, so I would take our portable white noise machine and put it on when it was time for a nap (making sure the volume was not too loud and the noise machine was in the bottom tray or the handle of the pram and not right beside her). I hope this helps.

I can’t make my daughter to take naps during the day 😞 I learn to walk with her to make her sleep and when I put her in her crib she wakes up 😢 or she “sleep” for 5, 10 or 30 minutes max. At night she can sleep better. For example from 10 pm to 5 am most of the days. I’ve heard from a pediatrician that we need to put her in her crib and just talk to her until she falls asleep and if she starts to cry, we just have to talk 🤷🏻‍♀️ or if she’s crying for 10 minutes we can calm her down and star over again. But my heart breaks seeing her crying for seconds💔 What can I do? I’m desperate here 😭

@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard Жыл бұрын
Hi Shadi! Following your newborn's tired signs is very appropriate for this age and beneficial. I would also start implementing a short bedtime routine. For my 11 week old her bedtime routine consist of putting on her sleeping bag, turning on the white noise machine, closing the blinds and then singing Twinkle, Twinkle before putting her in her crib. You do not have do a bedtime routine before every nap, as your little one is likely to fall asleep when having a breastfeed or formula. You can also start waking your little one consistently in the morning but I would hold off until they are around 6- 8 weeks as this is when the pineal glad starts producing melatonin. Hope that helps!
