1) NEVER answer the question.. what do you want your payment to be? 2) KNOW what the vehicle you are purchasing is worth, used or new. 3) if you have a trade, know what that is worth as well. 4) ONLY PAY FOR THE VEHICLE PURCHASE PRICE, TAXES, LICENSING FEES, AND A 75 DOLLAR DOC FEE. Period.

I helped a coworker buy a used car the other day. I noticed it had the VIN etching on it. When we went into the finance office they tried to sell it to her again. I just want to say thanks! I’m in my 50’s and have new cars every 4 years or so. I always went in with the “I don’t want my payment to be above X dollars”. This time I decided I was gonna do it right. I binge watched tons of your videos and feel like I got a good deal. That being said, the Finance Manager tried to pull a fast one on me with the numbers and I called his bluff. He stammered and tried to get me to just go with it but nope....I didn’t. I got up to leave and he somehow was able to “fix” the issue after his manager made a “special exemption”. Through it all, I even ended up with a lower interest rate than was initially given. And I said “NO” 468, 294 times to all the extras. He tried but I kept firm.

If you bought vehicles with the best long term dependability, Toyota/Lexus, you wouldn’t have to buy a new vehicle every four years, which BTW is throwing away a lot of money over a lifetime via depreciation!!! Quit buying junk! I have a sister in law that buys a new Chevy truck every three years because she refuses to not have a warranty. She needs that warranty because that POS always needs something worked on. Meanwhile her sister with the Toyota RAV4 that she bought new in 2007 has 180k miles and still runs like brand new and has never required any repairs, just oil changes, brakes and tires! Most Toyota’s are trouble free for many many miles!

I never ever buy anything else when I reach the finance office, and it gets annoying when I have to keep telling these idiots over and over again, I do not buy extended warranties, I do not buy paint/cloth, etc, protection. I just want the vehicle for the agreed upon price. I once told a finance guy that if he kept asking I would walk. If after 3 years 36k miles you feel the need for coverage buy carshield insurance or some other warranty that is offered by a ton of places now. Also GAP can be purchased through your insurance if needed. I have purchased a dozen or so new vehicles over the years and never once needed to use an extended warranty.

@@dfana8999 true there are higher margins in Service contracts and Gap insurance but to me are both very necessary to buy...but just negotiate the price of them like any other products you buy from other retailers...the worst calls I get from customers is the ones I get about asking if they had Gap insurance on their loan and seeing they didn't and there's been a total loss and you know their about to pay a deficiency balance because more than likely they rolled negative equity over or just the massive amounts of depreciation all these new cars have! Or someone walking from the service department asking me do they have an extended warranty on their car because the service writer just told them they needed hundreds or thousands of dollars in repairs...thats why those products are needed! But somewhere along the way people just thought the car industry is the only that "rips" people off?! Hell any thing thats an insurance is marked up a ton. Try going to your State Farm or Nationwide and ask them for a discount because you think its too much...they'll look at like your crazy! About 10 years ago I was asked to buy 3 or 4 additional items in the finance office. I told the finance manager that I was at his dealership that day to buy a car not a bunch of worthless items that I don't need. He didn't really listen to what I just said and continued to try to sell to me another item. So I got up and started to walk out. He asked where I was going and I told him that I was going to another dealer. He finally figured out what I was saying and I bought the car as the sales person wrote up. I got what I wanted. End if story, well sort of, why is buying a car like pulling teeth? If I buy a house there is a negotiation period but there usually isn't a hard sell to buy additional unwanted items or a bunch of BS fees to pay. When will dealerships change? Last fall I bought a Lexus from a small dealership selling only luxury cars. Their sales tactic was the sales price is the final and only price. Take it or leave it. The Lexus was under priced and the only thing negative was the color. About three weeks later the owner called and said he got one in the color I wanted. I'll I had to do was come in and sign papers on the newer car. One small catch, the newer one was two thousand more. I kept the first one but may return one day.

Very good advice. When i purchased my 2014 CTSV, the finance guy was brutal. My first mistake was purchasing “Auto Armor” which was a huge mistake. I already planned on getting my car ceramic coated and i figured i could roll this into my loan when he suggested it. I was so anxious and excited that i opted into that which now was a HUGE waste of money. I wasn’t too impressed with it and ended up getting it actually ceramic coated a month later. The finance guy also tried really hard on the life insurance which i refused to get. My sales guy was great but that finance guy was a pain in the ass. The following year when i purchased a new Sonata for a DD, they were much better than the caddy dealer. All they wanted to push on me was some wheel warranty which i refused.

I also tell them that unless they’re going to make half my payment there are to be zero things on the truck that markets the dealership. I never understand people who allow themselves to be rolling billboards for car dealerships with stickers, mud flaps and license plate frames. In my 55 years of car ownership I’ve always changed the oil every 3 months or 3,000 miles. Some say this is wasteful but it’s my thing and I’m sticking with it. Since at this stage of my life this will be the last truck I’ll ever need or buy and due to the high cost of a Diesel engine oil change I did know ahead of time I wanted their lifetime oil change program that allows an oil and filter change every 3 months regardless of mileage. For me the payback is less than 2 years.

Never, never, NEVER finance at the dealer. Go online with what you think you can afford for payments, put that payment in and figure out what the total price will be. Then visit a local credit union, and apply for that amount. The credit union will not lie to you regarding your best interest rate. EVERY finance guy will lie about the rate you can get. You have excellent credit and qualify for 1.9%?? The F&I guy will say you qualify for 2.9, or 3.9 and make money on your ignorance of your credit rating. If you must finance at the dealer, never negotiate on the payment!! Find out your credit score, then negotiate the price of the vehicle. You are playing a losers game if you negotiate the payment. The only time I would consider financing at the dealer is if they had a 0% deal, and I would only finance if they were also offering thousands off MSRP. Unfortunately most dealers will offer 0% OR thousands off. It is a much better deal to get the thousands off and finance at 1.9% through my credit union.

Dealer financing can be be very good if you know how to play the hand. I have 840 credit score, go to my CU first and find out what type of rate they will give me. Then, at the dealer F&I guy, ask him what is the best “buy rate” he can offer you? See how that compares to your CU rate, most times you can get a lower rate with good/great credit at the dealer.

A banker I used to work with loved credit life insurance because of the profit in it. He said he would occasionally encounter a customer at death’s door and knew he would lose on the policy but that was a rare thing. Keep in mind with these policies that they are declining term policies. The pay only for the loan balance so as the amount owed reduces over time the payout gets lower. A term policy that doesn’t decline is always a better deal if you can get one.

There is one proper way to do paint protection. You find a GOOD shop (ask around). It’s a 3 step process. Paint correction (where they basically polish out the paint - it usually comes from the factory pretty bad), then paint protection film , then ceramic coat. Find someone who loves cars to do it. I’d never let a dealership do it. I don’t even let them wash the car.

Whatever you get approved on, that's the rate you get. We don't sell accessories in finance at all. Of the paint protection, we sell the one he recommended. We also teach to show the base payment upfront. Lojack has some extra benefits but it's not a hard sale. With Toyota vehicles, the tracking services come standard on the highest trim levels, they aren't available on the base model.

The dealer that I walked out of on Friday tried to sell me a Pulse brake light add-on. It was 'required'. I walked. And then after research realized that the Federal mandate is that brake lights are a steady solid light. Pulsing brake lights will get you a ticket in some states. While they might make sense, they are still illegal.

I repeat do not buy an extended warranty . You will either trade the vehicle in before the warranty is up or you can pay for one cash or on a credit card with 0% interest right around the time your factory warranty runs out. Trust that the dealership will send you reminders and offers just to remind and solicit you.

It depends on your needs. I buy vehicles with the intentions of keeping them 8-10 years, which is longer than most manufacturer warranties. Also, buying warranties three, four, five years later means the price of the warranties goes up as the vehicle ages and mileage starts piling up. It's really no different than your health insurance premium going up as you age. I tend to buy warranties at the time of buying a vehicle that overlaps the manufacture one. While I dont like overlapping, in the long run it is cheaper, since as I stated, the cost goes up as the vehicle ages.

One thing I learned was the particular brand required PH Neutral water to wash truck with. I called and asked why this wasn't explained when buying it. Dealer said it wasn't so, and I said it is stated clearly for XYZ brand to use PH neutral water. I do not have PH neutral water coming from our water company. Like to never got my money back.

Just buy from carvana, 100 day warranty, often free delivery, no bs add ons and 100 days or 4K mile warranty. Also bs on the warranties. Often the warranties are not from the Chevy, Ford , etc but some third party that may not cover the repairs. Most people never use the warranties and if they do the cost to fix it typically less than the warranty. Dave Ramsey- “I don’t buy warranties”

So when my Boss goes in to pick up after calling it in the service guy wanted $300 for key and programming. And they claimed we didn’t buy the car from them. It torqued the wife so tight that she backed up to the waiting room and went and got the bill of sale. Brought it back to the desk of the finance guy that closed the sale and bitched him out loud enough for the GM to come over. Was one of my proudest days ever. And the idiots over torqued the oil filter so tight that it took a three foot pipe wrench plus a four foot cheater to remove. No more business for them!

I just bought a 2022 RAM. After settling on the price (which was relatively easy because I am a Stellantis employee), the final paperwork before I agreed to get the vehicle had a $2000 charge for a paint protection program. I told them I didn't want it. They said all their vehicles have it. Since the truck was just coming in to them, I told them not to apply the product and if they do, I don't want the truck. They finally agreed. Later, I called my company's vehicle operations department. They told me it was a violation of the employee purchase program to force customers to have an add-on product. The bottom line is, you have to be willing to walk away from the deal.

A good finance guy is not afraid to tell you exactly how much each item you are adding cost you. I personally write it out every time a customer asks me that question. Have the finance person write the total of each product right next to their presentation to you. Then divide that number by the total months you are financing and there you go. typically that will give you an idea of what it is adding to your total payment.

Pro tip, if you want branded accessories, go to the dealer ahead of time & get quotes on pricing. Say "hey, I have a & want to have installed. What's that going to run me"? When you're in the finance office purchasing said vehicles, ask for those accessories and how much that adds to the sale price. You now have some pretty good ammo to get it for even cheaper than the parts dept would have installed it for any other customer. :)

In MO, sales tax is a double-edged sword.... we don’t pay tax at the dealership. We have 30 days to pay at the DMV/DOR. That said, my down payment was a down payment and not a payment towards TT&L. That said, I see a lot of vehicles running around St Louis with expired temp tags because they still owe the state 7-1/2% (average) before they can register it. F&I managers don’t tell the customer the amount the DOR needs for sales tax unless you explicitly ask them to calculate it.

It wasn’t even to car he really wanted because the one they tried to sell him was base with zero options. I showed up and pulled out my phone with Chevy dudes videos and the salesman was dumbfounded. We didn’t give him the option to back out of the extras we just left. Went to another Mazda dealership and told them about it and they said we get a lot of there ex-customers.
