I went in using these tactics. Dealership did not like the power struggle. I asked for the breakdown of the price and fees. They refused until I signed a chicken scratched “deal” on a piece of paper. Quick story - I watched the video then went to a Hyundai dealership for a pre-owned Lexus (it was a specific model I couldn't find in my town). Test drive was great and friendly, no real qualifying questions. The listed (dealer discount) price was $26k down from $29k. They hand me a paper that says $32k tax and fees included!!! I said please break this down. 10 minutes later and there are $4,100 of aftermarket accessories and fees for theft coating and nitrogen added into the price. Can't take them out. I told him directly I'm not paying for those. Scratched out the price and offered $24k plus tax and title. To be fair, It was a bit of a low ball, but I expected to be negotiating on the price. After back and forth the manager comes out and says he's on my side and the car is priced fairly, we look at carvana etc, etc with the cliche lines. Point blank I asked them, will you sell it to me for the advertised $26k, plus tax and licence (about $2500). He says they will try to get me close to $30k. They wouldn't budge. I was not happy because we drove 90 min to see the car. I said "this deal is walking out the door". And so we did. No deal. When we checked reviews online it seems to be the standard practice. They "discount" the price online, then bake in these aftermarket accessories so really we are meant to negotiate on the "extras" now, not the price of the car. It's bad business practice. I will be complaining everywhere I can, because it's deceptive. Anyone else feel this is somehow not legal?
@Estecuban2 жыл бұрын

9:37 - "Dealers will never negotiate out the doc fee, there's too many legal ramifications" a. Name even 3 of these "legal ramifications" b. Why should these "legal ramifications" automatically prevent a negotiation? This sounds like vague scare words. Simply negotiating the purchase price has a "legal ramification" (i.e., the purchase contract changes) but no one cites that as a reason that a reason why a dealer would refuse to negotiate purchase price. IMO dealers may refuse to negotiate doc fees because they don't want to set a precedent, which has nothing to do with "legal ramifications" and everything to do with their business strategy.

If flashing "high mount" (third) brake lights had a definite safety benefit, then they would already be mandated under Federal law. In fact, when NHTSA was doing the original safety studies on the effectiveness of high mount brake lights in the early 1990s, one option they tested used a flashing light. The studies indicated that the flashing light was no more effective than the steady light.

Now a big thing in fees is the reconditioning fee that car dealers are adding on. It should be added to the selling price of the car. In Florida your starting to see private tag agency fee under for about $200 when all they have to do in Florida is send the money for tag, tax, and title is pay directly to all the County Tax Collector offices. Plus on top of that they charge a registration filing fee which is the same thing for paying the tag fee. But using a third party for the service. Arrigo Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Fort Pierce Florida charges a reconditioning and dealer accessories fee of $998. For a total of $1381 on their disclaimer fees. Because they charge for the 3 sperate fees $200+$184+$998 plus on top of that they still charge the tax, title, and registration fees that go to the Tax Collectors office.
@Alsam3 жыл бұрын
I think the reconditioning fee is BS too. They deem the person they bought the car from because it’s not in perfect condition. Why would they also charge the person they’re selling to because the car is not in perfect condition? Sounds like a double dip to me.

What do you think about a dealership advertising a car online for lets say $45,000 and when you scroll down in the ad their is a box that reads FULL DESCRIPTION. Well after clicking on that you get a ton more info and at the very bottom is the kicker... This particular ad read like this: There is a $1,000 captive savings discount and $1,000 trade in assist included in the price. Must trade a vehicle that is 2006 and newer. Anybody else get their own financing and have to deal with this. So it seems as though they will add $2000 to the advertised online price of $45,000 if you don't finance with one of their lenders and have a trade in. This is at Montgomery Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership in Nicholasville, KY...

Hello guys. I had a quick question. I went onto my local northtown honda to look for a 2022 crv. I know these are crazy times but when i got the quote for the prize of the car , there was a $1500 destination fee. A $1500 zurich shield fee. When i asked what a zurich shield is, the sales rep said that honda is putting a zurich shield on all their new cars as it protects the exterior like the paints and polishes and also protects the interior from food spills and stuff like that. Then i saw an additional $2000 market adjustment fee or what he called as an lack of inventory fee. The rep told me that because of the shortages of the vehicles all around, we are charging market adjustment fee. Then a week later i went to northtown kia and they added zurich shield and market adjustment fees as well. Although the amounts differed. My guess is that every dealership under northtown is adding those charges. I live in buffalo. Please tell me if these charges are the ones that i would have to pay or all is scam?

Just walked away with a mint condition 1 owner no wreck 20,000 miles clean carfax $5400 cheaper! I already knew what I should have paid! And that saved me BIG TIME! Don't let these scummers rip you off!

Thanks Chevy Dude. I am in the process of ordering a BMW and will use your video. I bought a new BMW from this dealership 4 years ago and I told the salesman I didn't want any add on equipment but I did pay a large DOC fee. I understand that the dealer is required by law to charge everyone the same doc fee so I guess I am stuck on that one.

I love this video! I really wish I seen this before buying my certified preowned from Honda. After I got off the lot my car didn’t have floor mats. They said people keep them so they don’t replace them. Is that true? And I also ask for a 2nd Key. And they said if I gave 1 key from my car I traded in that’s all I get back, is that sound right? Thanks

Depending where you live and the climate, like Canada nitrogen in your tires does make a difference! but not the way you think. Nitrogen is not affected by temperature fluctuations. meaning that your tires pressure does not need to be topped up in the winter and lowered in the summer, which affects the way your tires wear increasing the tire longevity. in the southern states there is no need for anything but normal air in your tires. some places that offer nitrogen don't actually put nitrogen in your tires. Watch them when they do it your tire should inflate and deflate a few times if they are actually doing it correctly as the machine needs to filter out everything but the nitrogen.

So many dealers charging market adjustment fees, I left my Ford dealer last week after they tried to get me to pay a 5K market adjustment fee!!! I have bought about 5 vehicles from them over the past 10 years....I told the sales manager who I know by first name....I will never be back.....so many scammy dealers and crooks. But hey, like she told me....I wont pay it but there is always someone that will...hope that one sale mentality backfires one day.

I walked into a dealership looking for a 2019 Corolla SE in falcon grey metallic back in August of 2018. They had one sitting right outside, I told the sales person that I was not going to pay a cent over 20k flat. He said there was nothing they could do about the fees. I looked right at him and said, “listen I know you want the commission on this transaction and I want to take this car home TODAY”. He went back to his “boss” and gave me the car for 20k. I refused to pay bullshit fees.

My favorite from a deal I walked away from was a dealer charging to recondition my trade that was 3 years old with 50k miles. Literally said, ok we'll give you 12,000 for it (which was way low) and then took off $250 to detail it, $50 for an oil change, and another $100 for the inspection. I was like, so it isnt 12k then, its 11,600. Then, tried to charge the same $250 detail charge on the brand new car as well as the blinky light for $300. I was laughing at them as I walked out. Never again will I set foot in that dealership. 8 months later in (Aug 2019) I get 13,500 for the same car when I bought my current car. No bs fees or add ons like the first one.
@pluggedev84643 жыл бұрын
Just buy from carvana, 100 day warranty, often free delivery, no bs add ons and 100 days or 4K mile warranty. Also bs on the warranties. Often the warranties are not from the Chevy, Ford , etc but some third party that may not cover the repairs. Most people never use the warranties and if they do the cost to fix it typically less than the warranty. Dave Ramsey- “I don’t buy warranties”

Use kbb as a guide specifically putting in all the features the car you want has Everything. Even the color. It’ll give you a range of what you should be paying. If the range is higher than what you expected to pay for it, dont waste your time. Dealerships also like to ask, how you came to your number and tell them Kbb is my guide.

LoJack is still around? The company originated in Massachusetts, and were really big in New England in the 1990s. They offered several levels of alarm systems, all of which had a common feature - the "secret switch." In simple terms, they would 'overlay' an electrical signal onto a switch or control, typically a radio control, turn signal switch, or - as on my 1988 Prelude, the side mirror control. You would need to activate this switch while turning the key to start the car. It was a simple concept, but over time it would wreak havoc on the vehicle's electrical system, causing components to eventually partially or totally fail.

They do it also with Maintenance. Instead of paying double I rather do it myself. They were charging me more than $60 just to replace my wipers. Went to autozone, paid less than 60. My 4 tires were running low, they were charging me around 900, got the same tires less $900 online and just took them to the tire shop to get them changed. Went back for maintenance and Mfs still told me I needed those items replaced when they’ve been. I’m starting to think that they don’t do 💩 but make me wait

Several years ago I bought a used GMC 1500 Denali, I got the third party extended warranty mostly because they knocked the price in half and I'm glad I did. About 4 months later it crapped 2 injectors. The truck still had the factory power-train warranty but that only covered the mechanical engine parts and not the electronics which an injector fell under. There were some other stuff that was covered by the factory warranty, all told the two coverages saved me almost $900. About 6 months ago I traded the truck in on a new truck, the only mention of GAP insurance was the finance guy saying "You got such a good deal you don't need it," OTD price was almost 10K below MSRP with a extended factory warranty. Checking the KBB trade vs what I owe I'm around 20k ahead right now.

Funny about doc fee because I bought a tbss and a cruze from the same dealer without one. My cruze I made the deal over the phone while sitting at another dealer that didn't want to budge on vehicle or additional fee's. Maybe it was in the purchase price, even if they were thousands less than the others and were no hassle. Walked in sat down, configured tbss and had a price all in 20 minutes.

I pay the price I figured out and they accept; really care less what lines they put numbers on to get it. I know there are business rules governing what you can value a used car for trade as it is a cost of inventory for tax valuations, taxes are set by governments and what the other lines are is whatever they want for internal business reasons. Bottom line I pay is only item of importance. In 50 years and close to 20 vehicles, never an issue.

I just ordered a 2023 Chevy Bolt EV last week. They got me in there by saying they'd wave the $459 doc fee. Well after I'm there I found out that was true...but I have to take the paperwork over to the DMV myself and pay for the title and registration, and I think tax at the DMV. Which I said I would do. I told my salesperson multiple times I would not accept any "Market Price Adjustment", or dealer add ons. We'll see how all that goes when the car comes in and I have to sit in the Finance office, even though I'm paying cash for the car. Just like I told my salesman, I feel I'll have to scrutinize every paper I sign to be assured they don't try to get me to authorize some add on(s) under the radar that I don't want. If they've already pre-installed stuff that can't be removed, like etching, then I'll leave if they say I have to pay for it. And collect my $1000 down payment on the way out.

As of speaking of Destination Fee from factory to dealership. He says dealerships doesn’t make any money off it...... I have to beg the differ. I already know the dealership is paying the company that send truck to transport the full load of 8 cars a fee anywhere between $1500-2000........ In turn, the dealership charges each customer of the 8 vehicles a Destination fee which can range in profits anywhere from $8,000 to $12,000 per truck load..... The true question of the day is, why should I pay a Destination fee for a car that's coming to the dealership parking lot regardless if i buy the car or not. I can understand if it was a custom car of my design, but it's not... That fee is between the factory and the dealership, it has nothing to do with me.......... If that makes sense....

i just ran into this problem of buying a 2016 Honda pilot. the dealer advertise $18,900 online. after test drive and getting numbers with my trade in. the dealership came back with $24,.500 out the door. they tak on a shottenkirk toyota care fee for $2995 and a mechancial recondition fee for $1500(the car had 2 bald tires that were replaced. idk how these fees were charged without replacement) . the sales men try to tell me they were not negotiable and i told him either remove them or i walk. he got his finance manager out to talk to me. manager said the same thing. that its part of there process and we will not remove the fees. at that point i brought the fair market value of the car. low end trade of $16k and high value trade of $18k. i told him flat out that your over pricing that car and just making pure profit at this point. the finance manager started to throw a hissy fit. telling me no one has treated him this bad in 33 years. all i did was stated facts. he forced me out of the dealership and told me to never come back. to top it all off. the sale men gave me a thumbs up. because due to social media. i know all there tricks up there sleeve now! thanks chevy dude!

Negotiating a Lease is difficult, there's so much funny money involved the dealer can finagle things to get the numbers to come out they way they want it to appear. I pretty much have to go by fixing the number of months and amount I'm willing to pay at signing. I kind of figure as long as those two are fixed, the only variable is the monthly payment. No reducing the payment by adding months to the lease kind of thing!! But, its still difficult to know if you're actually getting a good deal or not. I don't know how accurate the 1% rule is, but, I guess that's at least a sanity check.

It's pretty easy to use a good lease calculator and Edmunds to make sure everything is lining up. The one percent rule normally still applies, but I'd still run a calculator for instance my Cadillac ct6 I had was just over 60,000 got the lease worked out in the low 400's, but my 2020 Altima SL after discounts was high 20's lease is 250/mo

People say not to pay more than $75 for a doc fee because multiple states have an average doc fee of $75. No, the documentation fee is not mandated by the state. The only thing your state says is that you cannot adjust the price of the documentation fee from customer to customer. You have to charge a flat rate. That doesn't mean that you have to charge $600. And no, that doesn't mean that you have to include the fees you are required to pay under state law, such as tax tag and title, as a part of your so-called documentation fee either. The only reason you mix in those required fees with your documentation fee is so that you can trick the buyer into believing that it's a mandatory fee. I
