Attach noisemakers to them, such as a bell that would permanently disorient the creature and effectively blind them due to their echolocation and reliance on hearing. The only problem would be getting it on them, but I would try firing a projectile into them with the attached bell. This could cause other creatures to attack the sounds, potentially weaponizing them against themselves.

Honestly, fucking with their hearing would be my first avenue of attack. Simple, really: The fact they perceive the world through sound and have incredibly acute hearing is known, you can see the newspaper clippings saying as much. With that in mind, wouldn't you want to attempt to cripple or hurt their primary sense? If you can permanently damage their hearing, or better yet, outright DEAFEN them? You win. How about rigging up a speaker to play sounds, when they get close, lower the volume, and then when they expose those nasty ear holes.... oh, I don't know.... have some strings wired up to the pins of flash grenades, and give it a good yank. See how their exposed ears like that one. Or maybe stick something fucking sharp in there, like a blowgun dart, spear, arrow, or sharp stick. Try Dog whistles, mic feedback, and even whale songs. The point is, you can probably find some way to get a direct sonic, pressure based, or physical attack into those ear holes, and once you do, that creature is in a WORLD of pain and may not ever really recover from the damage.

The most common theory as to why the creatures attack noise is because of their extremely sensitive sense of hearing, thus explaining why they kill without eating and why they'll attack inanimate objects. Also, this would be a good explanation as to why they don't kill things when they use echolocation and "see" people moving around: they aren't bloodthirsty, they just HATE sound. So, with the river, I think it has less to do with the river masking a specific range of frequencies, but instead that the river is unkillable so the creatures would learn to avoid it as it would hurt their ears. Theoretically, as long as the source of sound was loud enough and also unkillable, the creatures would avoid ANY massive sounds. I would imagine that early in the invasion they would have gone to the river, trying desperately to get it to shut up, but once they found out they couldn't get rid of the noise they would avoid it completely.

I think the reason they can make noise by the waterfalls and stuff is because the creatures learned that there is always noise there and that the sound of water does not come from something they can attack. If you notice in the house, the creature gets very close and it's only at the sound of the silo that it moves. It was probably trying to understand if what it was hearing was part of the water or not because this is not a place where it remembers there being moving water.

3 things: As someone who lives in Northern Maine, I've often wonder about the acoustics of snow. Short answer, they ain't great. Walking through the snow typically only sounds "loud" to the person doing it, and those within 10-15ft of them. Snow is an incredible sound damper. It's hard to hear a talking beyond 20ft or so, and a good shout stops around 50-75ft. It's even better when it's physically snowing. So they could operate pretty effectively in the winter, so long as they don't try to shovel the driveway. Metal shovel on asphalt probably having the highest resonating sound. Second thing, the US military, and the US police force, have access to sonic weaponry. Typically used as riot despersment, these high frequency dishes and plates would have made short work of these creatures. It certainly would not have taken a year to eradicate them. Lastly, as you said, these creatures don't eat and as the movie stated, they arrived on a meteorite, not a spaceship. This means that these creatures are one of the few life forms who are distinctly immortal. Hurtling through space was perfectly quiet and therefore they could live peacefully, possibly in a dormant state as they have no need to hunt or breathe. Given their aversion to high frequency sounds it's safe to assume that ALL sounds upset or harm them. They had to medium for sound to travel in space and now they inhabit a very loud planet. So they spread out and silence anything that they can, in hopes of creating a quiet place to live. Once they've achieved a semblance of peace in their location, they'll remain there. Hence why there were 3 near the farm who wouldn't leave. If the world was truly fucked, simply taking a boat off the Continent would be safe enough. They're land locked creatures with no visible swimming capabilities. That and to cross and ocean, they'd have to contend with whales and dolphins wrecking they're ears. I'm under the impression that after spreading from the crash site and following city to city and battlefield to battlefield, they'd firstly be landlocked, and secondly would stop spreading out when they stop picking up sounds in their vicinity. Worst case scenario, we lose North America except for places like Kansas, Northern Maine, and big patches of Canada and Alaska where places are too far apart for them to bother advancing. In this scenario I'd say South America is at risk but between the many jungles of noisy birds and monkeys, I believe they would retreat once they discerned the futility in trying to silence such loud wildlife.

@@teowachowski1143 I still think boats would work fine. Because if I'm right that all they want to some peace and quiet, being in the ocean will drive them insane. They'd be driven deep underwater by whales and dolphins, who's echo location would might be a high enough pitch to harm them. And on top of that, creatures like giant squid, sharks, and other large predators don't make any sounds when they attack. These predators don't need to be successful in killing them to wound them, attracting more predators eventually. So even if they could swim around the ocean, they'd never chase after boats or seek out islands with more people on it because the ocean itself is full of noise too. They constantly be switching targets and might eventually die in the deeper parts due to not understanding the positive pressure correlation related to water depth (if they came from space, they'd be used to negative pressure at all times), possibly crushing them. I still wager that ocean living is the way to go.

I think that a key point we're missing here is that the creatures do not react to AMBIENT noise of any kind, so the sounds of shucking corn and picking corn may not attract them. It seems that the only noises that attract them are ones that are different from the environment, or noises that are really loud. So the noises of plants rustling may not be something they care about. Otherwise they'd go nuts everytime there was a slight breeze.

I believe the problem wasn't "They're unkillable!" but rather "OH SHIT THEY'RE GONNA FUCKING GUT ME" followed by retreat. In the boots of a soldier, if EVERY SHOT you take is attracting theoretically more, and you have no idea how many hostiles there are in the AO, AND it takes a full 10 guys with assault rifles hitting that thing in the head constantly with a full mag apiece, that's the problem. A rocket launcher should do the trick, but since the distance they can hear the explosion from is MUCH larger, there would be exponentially more creatures attracted. You also have to remember these guys are fast as fuck, meaning that consistently hitting them is a hard challenge. Tl;dr: there comes a point where you are out of bullet from shooting one, or out of courage after seeing your friend just get mutilated to death in front of you.

I highly doubt they would wipe out all of the military before they found a viable solution or they just said fuck it and Napalm/nuke their asses.

Or get hit by a shaped load from an anti aircraft weapon. Like seriously taget systems of tanks and the like are ridiculously accurate by now. And no matter how bullet resistant your are, just attract enough of these things and drop a ton of napalm on them. They are clearly water based life so continued heat will cook them like a crab.

I don't think the creatures are susceptible to high pitch noise. The creatures produce their own electro-magnetic field, we see this when the creature opens it's head and all the TV's jump to static. The hearing aid, and speaker system are amplify this this field causing a feedback loop which is what caused the creatures pain.
