With the circle, I thought it was going to be a narrow cake, and that the circle should be run up and down the cake with the inner edge of it scraping the buttercream but I imagine that would be really awkward to do in practice.

I love the honesty that using a bench scraper isn't quite as quick and easy as so many videos would have you believe. I've never seen that ring method before, and I find it intriguing since it's actually the top that I struggle to get neat, rather than the sides. BUT I'm with you that no one wants to buy a bunch of them in different sizes!

@ericarobbin
@ericarobbin 6 жыл бұрын
Love the intro! I like the traditional way, these other methods seem to be more complicated, especially the one you had to cut the cake down and used the scraper anyway. Would be neat though if there was a hybrid gadget of the traditional cake scraper and fondant smoother for more stability and less chance of tilting when smoothing out icing.

4 times Ann...4 times better! I'm definitely liking the traditional method. It's just classic and no fuss. The others are a little strange and too much unneccessary effort. The gadgets don't just make it more difficult, but they seem to create new problems! You know what they say: "if it ain't broken, don't fix it!"

Wilton cake decorating classes teach you to do a basic, "good enough" smoothing job, then gently push a piece of non-patterned paper towel all around the cake to smooth out the rest of the imperfections. Another way sometimes do it is to freeze the frosted cake (again, with it having a "good enough" smoothing job), then use an icing spatula dipped in hot water to smooth out the rest of it. Love your channel, Ann!!! Thanks for all you do!!! :)
@mostout8076

P.S.- Ann- I keep meaning to try doing a crumb coat of melted frosting or ganache, chill it, then do the regular layer of frosting on top of it. Do you think that would work well?
