John that salmon colored Gap shirt w/ the denim on denim look is dashing. That salmon pops on your skin tone (so nice!) and the double denim (one dark one light) rule is a good one, very sharp and on point. All looks are gorgeous. Great suggestions.

I really like your style. I wear suits to work so I am pretty much an expert at the "suit, shirt, tie" thing, (I actually lay everything out the night before so that I don't have to think in the morning) but I am really not very good at doing a nice, upscale casual, I tend to wear a lot of khaki, grey or black "5-pocket" pants and button downs. So your videos have given me a whole knew way of looking at dressing. I really like the sport coat and the tie, I'm not sure that I like the two together. Maybe I play it a little too safe to wear a stripe and a plaid. I will admit that the more I look at it, it is growing on me, but not sure I would try it. LOL I have really gotten a lot out of your videos and I look forward to them. It is nice to see that I am not the only one who matches his watch to the outfit or occasion.

@@40OverFashion There was just something about the scale of the two patterns that didn't work for me, however you are the kind of man who can easily carry it off and look great. I own around ten suits, 20-30 shirts (solids, stripes and patterns), and same number of ties. I do mix patterns with my suits/shirts/ties, but I struggle with my upscale-casual wardrobe. I really like a subtle texture in my shirts, for instance today I am wearing a blue shirt with a herringbone weave, from a distance it reads as solid blue, but up close you can see the herringbone. I own around eight sport coats and probably six of those have some sort of pattern and I always just wear a solid shirt with them, but I would like to be able to mix it up a little. I guess I may be a bit more old-school and need to step out of my comfort zone a bit when it comes to that, but I'm at a loss as to how to do it. I will be very interested to get your take on mixing patterns.

Great video, as always. I find that a plain black t shirt (un-tucked) and a pair of loafers works really well with dark denim. Gentlemen, if you're not as slim as you used to be, a black t shirt will have a slimming effect, and wearing jeans with long rear pockets (think of the pockets on the old Levi's Engineered jeans, that kind of long/deep rear pocket) will make even the doughiest arse look good.

G-Star are great; I suspect that more than most of my fellow Englishmen have at least one pair in their wardrobe. True Religion are also great (if overpriced), and I can highly recommend Superdry jeans and Nudie jeans for great quality & fit at G Star prices.

John, the last look is killer. Love the jacket and tie and as always the Strands are a big hit. In fact you have probably inadvertently helped spike sales of the walnut Strands. I really like your channel! Please keep the content coming! Dark wash denim is indeed versatile, but lighter wash denim also can be worn with a dress shirt, Polo, sports coat, and dress shoes. It depends on the level of formality you are trying to achieve. Lighter wash is certainly less formal than dark wash, but for many venues that is totally acceptable. I have two pair of dark wash denims that I regularly wear with a dress shirt and formality up to a sports coat with tie and dress shoes. But my favorite pair of jeans is a lighter wash, but I limit the formality by skipping the tie and shifting to dress loafers or white leather sneakers. For the bars and clubs I usually frequent, this formality is still usually several cuts above what the other patrons are wearing, except for a few businessmen and lawyers still in their suits. I liked the plaid sports coat and I liked the tie, but I don't think they worked well together. Constructive criticism: Please keep your hands out of your pockets. I understand you may still be a little uncomfortable on camera, but please limit yourself to hooking one thumb in a corner of the front or back pocket. As you get more comfortable, you can probably find better uses for your hands.

To a certain extent, I agree. However, with this much contrast between the two colors, it works no problem. I think the issue comes in when the jeans and the jacket are too similar in color. For me, that’s when it doesn’t work.

I’d change the tie, in the last outfit. Maybe something floral?! Or damask texture instead of a print?! IMHO, the striped tie looks a bit off, with the check print of the jacket... Overall I loved all the outfits, thought.

Actually, the new fashion rule is that black loafers are for the evening, daytime loafers are brown, regardless of the color of your slacks. I didn't like it at first either, but it grew on me.

I’m 57 and struggle with the all white sneakers. I have several pairs of fashion sneakers, I just can’t get myself to wear the all white. I either feel that they are too young or they remind me of an old man in an assisted living home!

Hey Keith, I think the trick is finding a shoe with a slim, modern silhouette so they don't look too bulky or chunky. Try the Greats in this video, or even the Cole Haan Grand Pro in this video come in white.

Hey Dave! Try “slim straight”. They taper through the thigh, but straight from the knee down. If one brand doesn’t work, try another. 😃

Hi Dave! I love the windsor knot for the exact reasons you don't. :) I see way too many loosely-tied 4-in-hand knots, so I like to wear the half windsor because it's a little more bold and symmetrical. :)
