Started with a .410 at 13 still enjoying .410s at 72. More useful and fun than all my other guns. The 28 gauge is a big step up from a .410 pattern wise but learning to shoot well with a .410 made shooting with larger gauges easy, in fact sometimes too easy. Good video by the way.

At 77, we're from a generation that already had 22's to learn accuracy from. Today's generations don't have the same advantages/mindset. Expert shotgun, yes! Impossible, no!

Rob Breeze is that measured by hull size or barrel? Remember with a .410 the hull is a rather large percentage of the barrel diameter versus the minor differences with 20, 12 and 10 gauges. I’m missing the 16ga from my youth but it simply has disappeared where I live in Canada.

A 410 is a great gun to start some one on. They have to learn, shot placement and distance. When they learn to shoot a 410 and do it well, they will be a good shot with other shot guns. If they start with a 12 ga, they will not learn as much. When I started shooting I like many other, I used a .22 LR and you shot for the head so you did not waist any meat or have to pick pellets out of your meat. With a little practice you can shoot a chicken or duck in the head with a .22 LR, so using a 410 would not be a problem for some one starting out., but I only use a 410 for things on the run if standing still I go with a .22 a good rifle to start out with is a combo . 22 LR over a .410 Ga. Making it to easy, is not always the best way to go. If you have to work at something it is much rewarding, in the end..

Thanks John I have used .410 for clay shooting for more than 10 years and 40 yards is about as far as you can rely on pattern density to break clays consistently using 19gm 7 shot fibres. I have hit clays at 60 yards with 9gm 6 shot (only 70 pellets) but only due to luck. .410 is not suitable for a beginner/child who will be far better of with a lightweight 20 bore. The range of .410 guns on the market are not for sporting clays. I developed my own from a Lincoln and am currently using .410 barrels in my Blaser F3.

One of very few videos that explain the smaller gauges well. 28 and .410 are often used by experts. True that many learn on the 410 because of less recoil, but train them in a way that helps them on a target so they develop. And they must enjoy it to develop.

To anyone interested in shooting/buying a 410, do it. It's a lot of fun. Just be aware of its shortcomings as John has pointed out. Wow, I know that looking at the numbers it's clear the difference in payload, but cutting the two shells open added more appreciation for how little is being sent down range. Thanks again to John and the rest of the staff at The Gun Shop for the videos.

When I was 12 I was given an old Stevens over/under 22/410. It was actually a pretty junky gun but I did use it in the woods quite a bit. It's interesting that one of the British/American differences is that I've never heard "caliber" used when discussing shotguns in the States. Good video as always, and having looked at some many of the older ones it's also interesting to observe how much better they've become over time. Good work.

Μανώλης Μπάκης I’ve got a wonderful wood stocked Montefeltro I got for a steal here in Canada. I was going to cut the loading port and make it a competition gun but it’s so nice I’m simply getting a new loading tray because I’m jamming my thumb in the fork when pulling my hand away when loading. This isn’t a problem if you depress it with you off hand but I’m too used to double and quad loading. They sell for about $1,700 Canadian dollars and I paid about $1,300 and feel I got every bit of the full value. (I did add a TT extended bolt handle and safety as well as drilled and tapped the bolt release for an extended control, a $.50 coin in this case.)

Worth it? Nah I wouldn't say so. Good luck finding ammo for it. You'd have better luck finding illegal ammo than decent .410 loads. Better to get a 20 gauge. It's small enough for small game but it has better slugs than 12 gauge for big game.

Honestly I put together two mossberg 500 E series .410's for close range work (In home protection) and general around the garden pest control duty. Federal offers three flavors of buckshot (A 3-inch 9-pellet load of #4 Buckshot,A 3-inch 5-pellet '000' Buckshot, and 2-1/2 inch-4 pellet '000' buck) that play very well with the 18.5 inch factory cylinder bore barrels. I've noticed that the different gameloads do very well for snake control work.

I have a .410 that is chambered to also take the .45 Colt cartridge. Makes it that much more versitile and fun. Not all .410 shotguns are chambered to accept the .45 Colt, but all that aren't can accept a .44 Remington Magnum cartridge which, depending on the load can come out the end of the barrel at over 1700 fps, with a bullet weight of 200 to 250 grain. That's nearly double the muzzle energy of the venerable .S&W .44 Mag revolver of Dirty Harry fame. Then there is the armor defeating .444 Marlin round. I call it the .44 magnum-magnum.. You should be able to see by now, why in America, we love the .410 shotgun.

In the USA. There are loads of # 4 shot. and 410 is not what I would say is a beginners gun. It is way too little of shot for the distance for a youth to be sufficient with. Light 20 gauge is the best starter shot gun or very light 12 gauge 1 oz.

I'm confident enough in my abilities to leave the 12 in the bag and bust out the 410 when shooting ducks over decoys. Just gotta find the right balance between your abilities and the guns abilities. And you've got to have some shot discipline, crosses are problematic due to the 410s long shot string and sparse pellet density, but anything pitching straight in or pulling away is in strife. As for shooting Skeet, the 410 sure does sort out the men from the boys. Kids? Get a 28 gauge, much more forgiving when learning shotgun technique.

I shoot 4/10 regularly on driven days. The best combination I have found is three quarter and full chokes with Clever Mirage 3 inch magnum 5 shot. I even go Clay shooting with my son and shoot Ball Trap, Down the Line, Sport trap and Sporting. The preferred load for Clays are Fiocchi 3 inch 8s and 7.5s. Again three quarter and full chokes. You get some very funny looks and comments. It is very addictive shooting the 4/10 and the sense of achievement if you had a good score is great.

The biggest advantage of .410 is that you can own some really cool converted rifles on an easily-obtainable shotgun certificate. I have a WW1 era SMLE in .410. I've seen Gewher 98s and Moisin Nagants in 410 too. Always an eye catcher at the clay ground. You won't hit much though, maybe 10%!

Shame you can't get hold of 410 cartridges loaded with No9 shot (at least, I've never found them). Once you've accepted that the 410's range is limited to, say, 30m, you'll appreciate that 20g of No9 shot will give you a better, more consistent, pattern at that range and still have enough energy to do the business.

why don't they make (way) longer cartridges so they can hold more pellets? those might not work in semi-auto or pump-action shotguns, but in break-action shotguns, I don't see the problem
