My 2 cents: Leave the apple tree. They’re fun/easy for climbing and a good reminder of what once was there. I hope to clear (expand) a little opening back in our woods this summer. It’s like you’ve got a secret park all to yourself. Beautiful. Thanks for all the great ideas and videos. Always inspiring.

I received the following from a friend and thought about who might really appreciated it. You guys popped right into my head. (from Seth, living a great retirement on ten acres near Orlando Florida) Here it is... Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like: • When your loved ones come home, always run to greet them. • Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride. • Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy. • Take naps. • Stretch before rising. • Run, romp, and play daily. • Thrive on attention and let people touch you. • Avoid biting when a simple growl will do. • On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass. • On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree. • When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body. • Delight in the simple joy of a long walk. • Be faithful. • Never pretend to be something you’re not. • If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it. • When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently. That's the secret of happiness that we can learn from a good dog.

Good afternoon Mike and Melissa...The old apple orchard area is pretty as a park. I'm thinking it'd be a wonderful spot for a picnic table, making it a wonderful place to come to read, meditate, etc...😊 Thanks once more.

If you are looking to sustain the variety in the old orchard you could graft onto root stock. Restoring an orchard in this way certainly takes time. Perhaps Mike is reminiscing about bellyaches acquired whilst eating green apples.

Just got to work on my trails this last week. Ended up having to call it quits about a 1/4 the way through as the ground was still too soft to run the tractor over. Better news is we are potentially getting more snow this weekend! So sick of winter at this point. We doubled over our normal yearly average already for the season and she won’t give up.

Prune the dead branches off down to the branch collar and any waters spouts you can reach.? It'll still have some nice apples for the deer, and maybe some for you and Melissa. The tree probably has some fire blight, now is a good time to trim, sooner the better. If the there were other apple trees closeby I would be more concerned.

If you have apple wood, please don't commit it to firewood until you've contacted any wood carvers in your area. I understand that apple wood has a fine grain and good cross-grain strength that enables the carver to carve fine detail.

So watched yesterday's video, like the song "Still water runs deep", was tapping my feet to it while watching. Today it was stuck in my head! Ahhhh! Caught myself many times running it through my head, DOH! But as far as the apple tree is concerned, cut the dead stuff off and let it go if it is still producing apples. That would also be a great area to plant about 8 more apple trees. The deer would love it and provide you guys with some apples as well. I am sure Hunter would like apple picking! 3-way bonus!

Your comment on the elm you were splitting on your most recent video, reminded me of when I split fire wood when I was still at home. Sometimes I would get a piece of red oak that would be just as bad. However, we didn't have a wood splitter, it was a maul, wedges and most of the time an axe. Oh yeah, a lot of brute force.

Mike the apple tree looks good but could use a trimming, but wouldn't want to pick those apples at that height. Maybe you should plant some hybrid apple trees the start producing by the second or third year. All different kinds from honeycrisp, and pink lady, to johnagolds. The best part is they only grow to 7-10 feet tall, better picking!!

I have to say I think that RK 37 is the route to go if I guy had to have just one tractor. It's just a stout beast! With that hitch those viewers made and a wheeled rubber tire device like you see propane tanks hung from to move, but lower, I believe a setup like that the RK 37 would have gotten that big oak log out on a dry summer day! That orchard is so nice back in there it is almost a shame not to do something with it! Maybe a hammock and your favorite beverages if nothing else! You'd have to stop for a minute to do that though! ;o)

Your place is so beautiful! Here in North Florida the heat is starting to come on. We haven't gotten the rains that are usual yet (this is our "dry" season) so I have a couple of large brush piles waiting to burn. With all of the dead oak leaves on the ground and everything relatively dry it's too dangerous to burn right now. Every time I see you using that grapple and Big Tool Rack it makes me want to get those tools myself. Both would be very useful on our property.

Enjoying the videos as usual. Mike, you have most all the equipment I can imagine a fellow needs for a place the size of yours (and mine) but there’s one thing I can’t imagine not having that you apparently don’t have- a big equipment barn! Oh new video idea thanks to Melissa. A race between the ranger and the tractor. Since Melissa thinks the ranger is faster then the tractor. But with a huge twist it's an up hill dirt drag race both machines pulling the dump trailer with a full load of firewood in two wheel drive. Obviously it would have to be a timed event since you don't have two dump trailers that we know of. Nor do you have a trail wide enough to for a side by side race again that we know of.

Cut out the deadwood Mike & see what you got. If you can access the tops, lop them off, until you like the look. You can do the pruning right now, before it blooms out if possible. Apples are super hardy, and almost always come back better after pruning them... They thank you by rewarding you with fruit... Sometimes they skip a year producing apples... Bill... :~)

You guys mentioned Butler, PA. As 12 year old back in the mid 60's my dad & two other friends, Big John & Little John did a boar hunt in Butler at a game preserve. It was my first time out with my Barkers Dept Store Marlin 336C 30-30 rifle. As fate would have it, I got my first kill shooting the largest boar in the pack. It came out of the pack & literally started to charge me, but it stopped about 30 yards away me, sniffed the air, turned it's head & I squeezed off one round directly into his right ear as it dropped immediately, dead before it hit the ground... I also remember how good tasting this animal was! Bill on the Hill... :~)

You wanna "food plot" that area then go get about 10 more apple trees and plant them back over there. The deer will love ya for it,,,, besides the feeder.😉
