For .45 Auto I really like Federal HST, and I also really like Winchester Silvertip 185gr. My 1911 won't feed any cone shaped bullets like XTPs. If you're looking for a good cheaper .45 JHP, the Winchester White Box 230gr JHP seems to do really well. I shot a ham covered by an old jacket and got superb expansion and damage. Paul Harrell has tested the WWB 230gr on his meat target with great results too.

This was great because it shows that even though the PMC didn't expand, it still showed a decent wound channel. This is likely due to the shockwave created by the hollow point just like some hard cast semi wadcutters do. So bullet geometry has much to do with terminal ballistics even if they don't expand. Thanks for the video.

I had several boxes of the non-bonded version and as you no doubt know they were infamous for suffering core jacket separation. Those PMCs are actually target ammo. They are excellent for target shooting, shoot clean and consistent. If you notice most match grade. 45s are hollows, like the Nosler. Barnes, and Hornady. I think theyre my favorite target ammo. Ive found that magtech and federals will keyhole and tumble a lot versus the pmc. They also foul more. Golden saber bonded is a top notch defensive ammo, but sre illegal outside the home to carry here in jersey. Stay vigilant!

The standard for 185 gr. JHPs in .45 ACP from a 5" barrel has been 1000 FPS as long as I can remember, and that's 40+ years. I've never heard bad things about the PMC JHP itself, but under 900 FPS is abysmal. This might not sound like the easiest solution, but since you have a buddy who handloads, I think I'd pull those PMC JHPs and reload them in their still new cases. Have him remove the depriming rod from the sizer die and the cases can be resized while saving the primers. $.56 per round for a primer, new case and bullet would be an easier pill to swallow, IMO. Just add powder.

Because HP bullets are velocity based, I'm thinking that the PMC fell below the "expansion threshold", causing it to just streamline. A little more push and it might have opened some. The GS bonded usually always perform optimally, at least in all the tests I've ever seen. Great testing, unbiased and honest 👍.

Love your videos!!.. As I stated in your video using the 40 caliber. The rounds aren't traveling fast enough. The Golden Saber is designed as a true defense load. The copper walls are thinner, and side cuts are deeper. Whereas the PMC is not really designed as a true defensive round. As you mentioned, if you fired the PMC out of a carbine of say 16", I'm sure the performance would greatly improve. I watched videos using PMC 9mm JHP, and they performed very well. The expansion was similar to the Golden Saber in .45. But all the rounds fired reached 1000 fps, even out of a 3.5" barrel. This is generally the point needed for most hollow points to expand unless specifically designed to at slower speeds. I carried Speer Gold Dot in my Colt Defender. They also expanded well. But the 185 grain +P did sting my hand a little, but also hit near 1,100 fps.
@ToolsandTargets
@ToolsandTargets Жыл бұрын
Again, it's cheaply designed ammo. I have tested many actual premium self-defense rounds that have no problem reliably expanding below 1000fps. Sometimes you really do get what you pay for.

If you can still find some, try the Magtech Guardian Gold 45 ACP in either 230 grain or 185 grain. Both are +P loads and are amazing. Bad thing is they've been discontinued by Magtech. After those rounds, I use Winchester PDX1 Defender JHP's in 230 grain, or the older Remington Golden Sabre 185 grain brass jacketed hollow point defense loads. The Golden Sabre Bonded is their new round with a newly designed bullet. Same muzzle velocity and energy as the old brass jacketed rounds. Again, and round you can put into the gun and place on target where you are aiming will get the job done, especially with a 45 ACP.

Those golden saber loads have a couple of other nice benefits,…milder recoil than 230 grain loads, and because they are subsonic, there is less muzzle blast. Both are desirable attributes in a self defense situation. The price of the GS rounds is not bad at all when you consider the excellent performance, low recoil and less muzzle blast..

This PMC Bronze is proof of why I like 10mm. I have those exact rounds in 10mm and they get great expansion in gel testing. With 10mm you can run cheap hollow points and still get good performance. I also have these in 9mm 115 grain and they also preform well in gel testing but if they were 124’s or 147’s I doubt you would get expansion in 9mm. I bet the 45 would get expansion in a carbine just like you said. Both of these rounds are a little weak sauce, at 185 grain 45acp should be getting at least 1000fps. 850fps-950fps is what you would expect from a 230 grain bullet in 45acp.

the PMC were the only JHPs I have for my .45 (also an RIA) at the moment. Good to know I should be looking for something else. I had actually gotten it when I had seen your 9mm bronze video and thought it would work similarly.

I think it those pmc’s were going through clothing and bone, they would open up some. I know its bottom of the barrel for hp’s but i feel like they would do the job. Plus like you said, they are about as much ad a regular box of fmj’s.

I'm so surprised with the outcome of them PMC Bronze in .45 crazy! I only say that cause I had tested them before in .308 .357 and 9mm and they did ok. Now don't get me wrong they don't open up quite as good as a v-crown or hst but they were acceptable. I know the speeds you got are comparable to other .45 ammo, I'm wondering if the bronze in the .45 cal are loaded a little light and need a bit more speed to open up properly. Either way that is why you test so you don't end up with a pile of ammo that under performs when you really need it. Have a good one my friend and I will see you on the next one.

Hey Big fella PMC bronze 230gn fmj 45 acp $49.90 / 50 au. At a cheap shop 🇦🇺.... Love the 45acp. Never owned one but the 45 acp Colt was the first handgun I shot 25 years ago and I was sold. ( have a SS Kimber 1911 target 11 9 mm ) and love it 😊 ....... Comment on the 2 rounds.......That’s 2 BIG holes even if 1 didn’t preform too well.....Is the Rock Island a good handgun as I’ve never handled one ? Great video , agen 🙃

Thank you sir. The Rock Island is a great gun especially for the price. I picked this one up for just under $450 and it has run 100% flawless. It isn't as fancy as some of the higher priced units, but it's a workhorse. The grips I added took the looks up a few notches as well. Hope you enjoy your Sunday my friend!

Great test, Tools! Ok, I'm a bit late to this party! I will admit that I'm a bit disappointed in both of these rounds since a 185 gr bullet should be pushing 1000 to 1100 fps, although the GS did perform well. I load 185 Gold Dots at 1100 fps and their performance is fantastic! Still in all, I wouldn't be in the least worried about carrying the Sabers. My carry ammo as always is still the Underwood Xtreme Defender but their cost is way up there, so I always need some back up ammo for the zombie apocalypse and with Speer being scarce as hens teeth, I'm always looking for alternates. I wonder if Remington is going to sell the bonded GS as components? I'll have to look around for them. Thanks again for the work you do! Cheers, jc

I have the same suspicion about Federal Train and Protect 45acp, that it will perform like the PMC did here, as a cheap holler point. Give them a test if you come across any! I got a case when they went on sale at Black Friday (50cpr) which was as good a price I’ve seen on 45 for practice.

I like the non bonded version of the Golden sabers better. They perform very well. The PMC jhp results are surprising, usually in 45 acp you don't have to have premium jhp's because the mouth of the hollow points are so big generic rounds usually do good.

Barriers (especially cloth) generally cause less expansion because they clog the hollow cavity.

Yeah I dunno why PMC loads those things so light??? The projectiles are fine I'm sure, but if a 185 ain't goin 1000 fps out of a 5" barrel, they're short changin' you on powder. Their 185's are going damn near as slow as most 230's!

Yeah, that's definitely the problem with these. They're stretchin that powder way too thin!

I picked up a bunch of 185 +P during the plandemic before prices got stupid. I got 380, 357Sig and 45acp about a case each on clearance. I think the 380 were $8 a box and the 45+P were $12.50 a box. 357S were $9.47 a box. The 45 come out of a G41 at 1125fps average. But the bullets don't entirely hold together at that speed. Enough about that. I came to see how the Bronze worked. I ordered a case of it in 10mm JHP 170 grain. I hope it works better. If not, it was only $22 a box of 50.

Reading down the comments I don't see anyone mentioning that the golden sabre cost more because they are bonded. The PMC are not. Also the Remingtons are water sealed at the primer and at the neck. Also nickle plated brass for more reliable feeding. The Golden Sabre simply are a superior product to the pmc.
