Interesting video. 😏 So many exotic rounds these days... I'm old. Therefore, I'm old school. Carried a WWII mfg Colt 1911A1 in Vietnam. Three years in country, I had a few "unfriendly" encounters with the NVA while armed with that 1911A1. Won every time, and lived to be an old man now. The standard Ball round in 45 was then, as now, what I shoot. If it ain't broke don't fix it. And you won't find any plastic pop guns in my safe. A 1911A1 in 45ACP is the only autoloader I own. And I can give you over a couple dozen good reasons why. The rest are bigbore revolvers.

you werent concerned with the lower capacity? just wondering why you dont trend to a glock in 45 acp these days with almost double the magazine capacity
@anangryranger
@anangryranger 8 ай бұрын
@@user-im6fy4qp6m Why would I I want to do that? I've carried a Glock 1st generation when the PD forced us to carry 9mm autos. I retired soon after. Yes, I've had 2 Glocks, 2 S&W plastic striker fires, and a Taurus. Didn't keep any very long. Of those, I almost liked the Taurus a little as it had a thumb safety. However, 9mm is not suitable for reliable lethal hits. Whereas a 45 Auto, with the exception of a poorly placed hit, will take the fight out of what you hit with one round. Seven or eight rounds of 45 Auto are plenty for a fight. And I'm speaking from personal experience. As to a Glock in 45 Auto? No thanks. It's got no hammer. No safety. And its got too much plastic. I don't like 'em, and I don't trust 'em. Whereas, my carry auto is a 1911A1 I built-up with Novak Tritium sights, fully rebuilt inside and out. Ported and polished. And on my worst day, will print fist-size groups at 20m. With an ITWB holster, its easy to carry, and ultra dependable. Nope, I don't need a few more rounds to get the job done. Like I said earlier, I don't have plastic pistols. No matter what the current trend is today. I don't buy into "trends", I use what's best for me, and proven to work.

Both Sellier & Bellot and Winchester's 230 grain FMJ seems to be quite a bit more powerful than other brands. CCI really loads its target ammo extremely light which is okay if your competing or simply need an extremely large volume of ammo to complete a training course. On another note CCI uses small pistol primers in there 45acp it's a pain to separate their ammo out if you reload.

Did you chrono that Blaxer ammo thru any other pistols ? Have you chronograph 'Ed other ammo thru that pistol ? If so how did it compare to velocity expectations? That Blazer ammo gave velocities expected from a 3.5 inch Officer ACP , not a Commander length . Could be that Lot of Blazer FMJ was severely under loaded . But with two totally different ammunitions both being WAY slow , Were it mine , I would do more comparisons to try to determine if it is one of those bbls where the chamber / throat/ leade/ bore dimensions all tolerance stacked in the wrong combination to be " Slow " with everything .

It would be interesting to see these arx after passing through a barrier, they are tough, but they weigh less and will probably have slowed down considerably after passing through a tough enough medium, do they may not have that spiral wounding ability. Of course any projectiles capabilities will suffer when shot the objects first.

Man, that sure is some softball fmj. Should be clocking about a hundred more fps for standard loads.. stuff's probably meant for punching paper at a match more than anything.. my favorite hardball is Winchester, followed by Federal AE. usually 830-850 out of full size 1911. The ARX does have a useful degree of frangibility for steel plates and indoor backstops, plus it's non toxic.

Good test, but it's bugging me that the ball ammo wasn't even up to old US Govt specs: 230gr fmj @ ~830fps. Not that it would have made an incredible impact in the gel using ball ammo anyway, but .45acp that can't even touch 300ft/lbs of muzzle energy is just pitiful. Maybe a velocity test of different.45acp ball ammo is in order! Show which companies are actually loading these things up to snuff.

Fantastic test, Brian! I will admit, I'm pretty disappointed in the ARX velocity since I'm getting 1200fps out of the Underwood ammo with the Lehigh bullet (+P). I also have some misgivings regarding the ARX when going thru barriers or in extreme cold as the epoxy will get brittle. I've heard rumors but have never tested the ARX since I'm quite happy with the Lehigh bullets. I would also like to see a bit more penetration from the ARX. Still, it's not a bad bullet off hand and is certainly much better than ball!! I'm sure that the ARX bullet could be reloaded, just as the Lehigh bullets can be reloaded. I shot one Lehigh 9mm 90gr. bullet 6 times before I lost it out of my jugs! Not bad for a single bullet! Cheers, jc

I have a Sig P938 that just for the life of it, won’t cycle hollowpoints reliably. They get hung up on the feedramp like nothing I’ve seen before. I’ve come to keeping ARX rounds in its magazines and it shoots them just as well as FMJs. I don’t like that they are a light for caliber projectile that may not shoot to a standard FMJ’s POI on target, but really they aren’t that far off so in the event that I have to actually grab my P938 from its stashed spot in the house, I think they’ll do fine. I’d much rather have the wound channel created by those flutes than be limited to straight-line over penetration of FMJs. Great testing.

Very cool tests, as always. Back in my LEO days, as an overworked detective, I for a while carried a 1911 loaded with Hydra-Shoks (best we had back then). My sgt and dear friend carried a 1911 loaded with Federal FMJs and this produced many arguments between us. He'd say his choice was "combat proven," and I'd counter argue and we'd go round and round (albeit goodnaturedly). The man could shoot like a machine rest, though, I unless you were behind the bad guy, I guess it really didn't matter. ;)

What i like about these rounds is that they make my .45 26 and 30 round extended mags reliable. Simply, most .45auto ammo is just too heavy to run reliably in extended mags and the mags are blamed. The lehigh 135gr XD do well also but not anything heavier than that. Sure, they dont perform the best of all defensive rounds, but they are barrier blind and stop reliably within 18". These makes them good for firing into or out of vehicles, glass or doors.

What impresses me, even with the Lehigh/Underwood loads, are the speeds they have as well as their reliable performance upon impact. Why JHPs, yes they expand, but in real world environment will they be counted on? These solids are changing a lot of minds. If my attacker drops behind a store counter, I have full confidence in my ammo selection and he wasted his cover protection.👍👍. I feel also that the Higher Speed result from a higher load as these lighter projectiles could run into a cycle problem on the slide, just my thought.

IMO the ARX could be improved some by making the mix of items used to create it heavier so that it would be shorter in length but a little heavier in overall weight. If the bullet could be made 1/10'' shorter and weigh about 20 -30 grains more it would allow more area for gun powder and still give additional velocity. The additional weight would allow it to penetrate just a little more. The overall combo should allow for even more disruption in the gel and allow it to possibly travel 16'' +

I think now Norma offers something similar, Norma NXD. There’s another company G2 that makes similar products. I like this increasing trend of external hollow points.

I carry a Kimber Ultra Carry 2 for 20 yrs and I started carrying this ammo because it makes it so much lighter to carry u wouldn’t believe the difference in 230gr r even 185gr compared to this ammo. But I don’t know the speed r knock down on a short barrel like my Kimber. I’ve shot water jugs and it explodes them and they r accurate but any ammo I’ve shot through my Kimber has been accurate. I love a 45 it just shoots so good I can shoot the 45 way better then any of my 9mm’s.I don’t know what it is I guess I’ve had it so long and shot it more . It’s my baby.

Since I carry a Shield 45, I'm typically more curious about short barrel performance... I wonder how the ARX does in a Shield?

Slightly less velocity but generally the same performance. Less than an inch barrel length difference will be very similar.

I like those ARX because they don't have any sharp corners that may cause feeding problems with some finicky tools. Ballistics are very good. As always, FMJs are better than a sharp stick but over penetration can get you in trouble. I don't carry FMJs. I need to get some fluted for my 380.

That ARX is so light, seems weird in a 45 - 1911. Guessing the felt recoil is probably less than the heavier bullet?? They did good on penetration staying in 1st block. I wouldnt say I dont like them but think I would prefer a heavier projectile but that is just me lol! Appreciate ya! 👍💥💥

4.25" isn't full size for a 1911 but it is what most people consider full sized in general so i think it's fair to say the advertised velocity is misleading at minimum.

You think those composite rounds are possibly hard on the barrel because they are really hard and don't rifle? I like the fluted performance. I use what's available. My 45 has a 3 inch barrel. The pdx stuff isn't very accurate in my gun. The ball is more accurate.

I’m with you, Tools - those ARX are very impressive!! And you know me - have never been a fan on over-penetration the likes of those FMJ you tested today!! Thanks, as always, for this highly informative content!! I do wonder what the presence of a hard substance (like bone) will have over the performance of the ARX rounds though.

The super light wt might make then quickly shed velocity for ARX rounds. Anyone know how fast they are at 100 or 300 yards. Being monolithic and hard might make them more prone to ricochet.

I'm still unconvinced about these solid rounds, They seem to do amazingly good in gel but whenever Paul harrell tests them in the meat target they don't do very well they are basically performing like a fmj, I still think that for whatever reason they over perform in gel maybe the flutes disrupt the gel in a way that is unique to the gel that dousnt happen in flesh,

Packaging ammo in 20 rd boxes is an insult to those who buy it. They are ripping us off. And on top of it, they lie about the velocities. They get away with it because WE allow it. It's time we Bud Light these blokes by not purchasing ammo sold this way. BTW, those ARX bullets had a tendency to break on me and didn't perform as well as SWCs. Thanks for the vid.

@user-im6fy4qp6m Yes, I'm aware of those bullets being available for reloading. I've been shooting SWCs for eons, and nobody has demonstrated the Philips screwdriver bullets being superior to those. Plus, I refuse to purchase ammo in 20 rd boxes. It looks like I'll have to do my own virus testing sometime, so I will eventually pick some up. Thanks for the heads up.
