DIY: BMW E39 Rear View Mirror Removal

Big help thanks, I have a familymember who was reaching across the center console and was holding on to the mirror when it popped off. I noticed a second wire with what looks like velcro wrapped around one end. I have no idea what that does or goes. Any idea? 2002 325i E46

+Dustoff85 Could it be like a hockey tape??? It might be for a compass, garage door opener, or maybe something aftermarket someone added it.

@@HooxhieMayne It does go back on quite easily but the trick is not to force this and just gently glide back into the notch which will then grip it back into place, not the best explanation but I got mine back on after much trying and failures

Which way do you twist the little metal plate to separate it from the mirror? My mirror fell off along with the cap and I am looking for a way to re-attach it now. I need to take the metal base off somehow

Anti clock wise will remove the mirror from the mount , clock wise will re- attach it. You will need some wide mouth pliers, grips. If you need to re- glue the plate back on, use Loctite AA 319 , specifically designed to glue glass to plastic. Good luck...

So, the metal piece that attaches to the glass came off with the rear view mirror. What should I use to glue it back onto the glass?

There's a special window epoxy for that.

Do you mean the little square hole on the outside facing the windshield? That's a phototransistor which senses light.
