In this video, I show you how I would wire LED bulb turn signals, directionals, blinker circuit for a hotrod, car, truck, motorcycle, ATV, dirt bike, side by side, go cart, or whatever kind of vehicle needs a left and right turn signal. There are many different methods of wiring LED automotive style turn signals, but I prefer to wire them using two relays, because I feel like it is a safest method of wiring the circuit. Below is a list of the relays, the LED and non-LED turn signal flashers, fuses, the incandescent and LED 1157-style bulbs, 1157 style bulb sockets, and the 3 way toggle switch I used to make the entire circuit work properly.
Items used in the turn signal circuit (You may not need to buy in these quantities, but I did.)
🔗 5 Pack of 5-pin Bosch Style Relays - amzn.to/2OfiwXT
🔗 10 Pack of Fuse holders - amzn.to/3cU4CoD
🔗 4 Pack of LED Bulbs (1157 style) amzn.to/3gcNV8G
🔗 6 Pack of 1157 Bulb Sockets - amzn.to/3jtztJU
🔗 3 Way Toggle switch (Diff brand than video) - amzn.to/3abAeDw
🔗 10 Pack of 1157 NON-LED Bulbs (old style bulbs) - amzn.to/3a1Wa4N

HI - Thanks very much for the clear video. I want to add Led turn signals to my old motorbike which has a 6V system. I also would rather use a group of individual leds wired into a pattern rather than a bulb. Each indicator would be made of 4 or 5 Leds, so that would be 8 or 10 per side that need to flash at once. If I copy your system do you think it will work in my situation? Cheers, Chris

Absolutely fantastic video!!! I was about to have to rewire my entire golf cart after swapping over to LED from incandescent! And to top it off, I would have been in the same position as I am now had I rewired it. Because I would have rewired it the same way it is NOW! not good! Now to search and find out if you have a video of adding a 4 way flasher not just the turn signals.LOL what do you know about wiring an ignition key switch? I have a 5 pin and have no clue what each of the pins controls and seems there are no videos available to give that tidbit of essential information. If a 4 pin would work as a replacement I am willing to go to a 4 pin instead.

This is a great video and gave me a couple of thoughts to try. I have a 1980 gl1100 Goldwing. I changed the Flasher to a voltage triggered style. With all 4 LEDs it flashes twice and stays on solid. With 2 of 4 being incandescents it works as expected. I also tried swapping the terminals on the Flasher. I don't think it's related but I also put diodes on the indicators and they work in sync with the lights. Any ideas on what I may be wrong? I may have to go through all the wiring and try to trace everything but I was hoping perhaps anyone had any thought.

I’m doing LEDs on my 81 wing right now, I believe the issue is that we need to wire a resistor in parallel with the rear turn signal bulb, in order to carry a resistive load that will sufficiently heat the bi metal strip in the flasher and make it flash, the solution in this video would work, but it would require a lot of intrusive wiring, a parallel resistor would be an easier install

Great video and will really help when converting my taillights to LED (request for next video - building a tail light LED circuit). Isn't the switch technically a 3 position double pole switch (1 switch controlling 2 circuits) rather than a 3 way (2 switches controlling 1 circuit). Also what happened to the Engine Noise Podcast? I learned a lot on those!

Love the way you made your circuits. I'm redoing the turn signals on my 1982 silverwing. I do have a question tho, I am looking to add the indicator lights as well, where in the circuit would you put those? Each side has their own separate bulb for the indicator
@BlackHistoryReview
@BlackHistoryReview 8 ай бұрын
I'm thinking indicators would go between the switch and the relays. In parallel with the white wires from the outside of the switch to pin 86 on the relay. Or ... from the same point out to ground would probably be simpler.

How do you do it with brake lights when the Brake and Turn signal use the same filament. Basically the tail light has two filaments- low for running light, and bright for brake/turn. Except for the front turn signals also need to flash for signaling, but not for braking. I can't figure it out without 5 relays or more so far. Considering trying to sort with Arduino, but I don't know anything about building with arduino. Thanks!

Anytime you have an aftermarket stereo, you will inevitably need to do some wiring. Generally you get a wiring connector kit for whatever car it’s going in, and wire the stereo to the connector kit. Then plug in the whole thing. That way, you don’t have to modify the car wiring at all.

That is absolutely possible, but you would need to have a wiring schematic for your car and dig through the wiring harness to find the wires that you need. Or you could grab power from one of the bulbs that is turning on and use that power to activate your relay. Good luck with your project!

the white wire from the light socket, is it just hanging ? im asking because id like to replace lights with premade turn signals for a motorcycle, and only a negative and positive is included
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, in my diagram, the white wire is just not used because I'm only using 1 filament in the 2 filament bulbs. The benefit of a two filament bulb is that you can have a parking light PLUS a turn signal light, with a single bulb. Or you could have a turn signal light PLUS a brake light. If you only have a positive and negative on your bulb, you have a single filament bulb so you have to choose one type of light to run, or you need to get really creative with wiring to make the single filament bulbs do more than one job. Good luck with your project!

Second question, what about power windows should they use a relay? I'm using the standard door switches in the car, its a 97 240SX w/an LS1
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 жыл бұрын
@James Miley Solid question! It is only necessary if your bulbs draw more than the switch/flasher can handle. Many cheap switches handle 5 amps or less. An incandescent 1157 bulb can draw 2 amps if it’s working hard. So if you had more than two incandescent 1157 bulbs in your circuit, you could be at the limit of your switch. With this relay design in the video, you are limited by the flasher, the relay and the wiring. Many flashers can handle 10-12 amps, so that gives plenty of room for light bulb options. The 14awg wire and the relay can be handle more than the flasher. Hope that helps!

Good video. If I may ask, why you are using 1157 bulbs instead of 1156? The 1157 is a dual filament (5/25W) commonly used for tail/brake light applications, while the 1156 is a single filament (10W) and more suited as a directional (turn signal) flasher. Can you please clarify?!
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue Жыл бұрын
I used 1157's because the bulbs could be used as parking lights and turn signals. 1156's would be fine if you only need one function out of the bulbs. It's totally up to you.
@panagdimi
@panagdimi Жыл бұрын
OK, I see, however you are implying that you are building this from scratch so you can use any socket you want for the bulb of your choice. I am currently changing my motorcycle from standard to LEDs and the tail light/brake uses the 1157 socket with dual function bulb) while my turn signals are using the single 1156. So I have to use a bulb that matches the socket. Btw, initially I could not find the flasher you recommended specifically for LEDs so I bought this one on Amazon: B091PXFXFD. Even though it is advertised as LED "flasher fix" it did not work with LEDs . Luckily I later found the LED flasher you suggested. Thanks for your videos !!!

I need to buy extra wire to do this project. What type of wire do I need to buy to run 4 foot long pieces on my motorcycle? Thanks
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 жыл бұрын
It all depends what you are powering up and how much amperage those components draw. Let's say you are going to wire things that will draw less than 20 amps. You could use 14 gauge wire if it is less than 6 feet of wire according to this chart www.bluesea.com/resources/1437 . You'll probably want to use copper stranded wire as well. Unfortunately copper is really expensive right now. Maybe something like this: www.amazon.com/Fermerry-Silicone-Stranded-Electronic-Automotive/dp/B089CRKSNN If you are powering up something that draws more or less than 20 amps, then you can adjust the wire size up or down according to your needs. Good luck!

What’s the best way to waterproof the relays?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 11 ай бұрын
I know that “water resistant” relays exist. They are basically the same product but with a nice rubber case around them. They wouldn’t be water proof, but they would be good enough for areas that see some wet air or splashes of water. I think for 100% water proof, you may want to look into solid state relays. There may be some waterproof versions of those that you can dunk under water for a while and still be okay.

I have a Suzuki GR650 Tempter and tried to convert the lights to LED. I got an LED Flasher for it, and the lights are compatible with 1056/1156. I also converted the turn signal indicator lights to 194 LED - there are two on the Tempter, one for each side. When a front and back turn signal light for one side is converted to LED, that side to stops working. If I change the front to Incandescent, that side works. If I change the indicator light to incandescent, and leave the front and back LED, nothing happens. If I change the indicator to incandescent and front to incandescent, the rear led and indicator work. The reverse is true. So the system only works if one signal light on that side is incandescent. The indicator light seems to have no impact. I suspect they are drawing energy from the switch, and not in the same loop as the turn signals like they are on other bikes. Any ideas how to get all three lights on each side to work with LEDs? One bike nerd suggested a diode on the front signal lights would fix it.? While I am at it; what is the difference between a CF13/CF14 and CF15 non-polarity Flasher? One person suggested I get a CF15 non-polarity flasher and it would fix it.

It all depends which components you are using in the circuit. If you don’t like relays, I made a video about that too. Here you go kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4nMdqKAi9l7n5osi=vzWTNySJN5PLUYUL

@@WiringRescue thanks for the reply i will be watching it real soon.I am currently waiting for directional stocks to arrive by mail .I have been testing all my Led components Amp draw statictics for fuse purposes and have come to a conclusion so far that all my replacement Leds are drawing less than 1.5 amps that includes an Led H4 headlight bulb low beam.which is on constantly I would inagine a tiny Led which is only on 50 % of the time is extremely small draw unless the flasher it’self pulls a high draw or unless you may like the sound of the clicking like in the old cars.i will test this prior to final installation using a laser temp indicator.

Ok I’m building a custom Volkswagen trike & I fallowed this wiring diagram my front turn lights are working fine but my back one’s are not they are 6" Oval Amber LED Sequential Arrow Truck Bus Trailer Turn Signal Light Kits. First flash is maybe 2 arrows light then none then all 5 arrows flash, how can I fix this issue?

Are you using a flasher that is meant for LEDs? If not, the flashers may not flash. I have a video about this actually. Check it out if you have a chance.

When I buy LED bulbs to replace incandescent bulbs, they sell me 2 large resistors that I am supposed to install somewhere inline to prevent hyperflash. Do the relays in your circuit eliminate the need for the large resistors?
@jimmyokawa6800
@jimmyokawa6800 Жыл бұрын
In the beginning he said he is using an electronic flasher. The electronic flasher has a circuit timer in it to flash the LEDs, the old style incandescent bulb flasher uses a metal strip that heats up from the power of the bulb and opens and closes as it heats and cools. Therefore the resistors they give you creates enough resistance in the circuit to create enough heat to power the incandescent bulb flasher, orrr you could just use your led bulbs without the resistors and replace your Incandescent flasher with an electronic flasher and it will work properly. Hope that helps and wasn't too much info lol

What about a newer vehicle that has a Can-Bus system. There's no flasher relays...it's all in the computer. It's a 09 HHR.
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 жыл бұрын
Can-Bus makes everything way way harder because it is modules telling lights in blink instead of flashers. So every car with Can-Bus is going to be a whole different animal. In the case of the 09 HHR, your best bet is to diagnose the problem properly, and replace it with a junkyard part, or one from eBay, craigslist, etc. I realize this stinks, and is more expensive, but that is sort of the deal with can-bus. :(

When you say “not enough resistance”, you really mean “not enough conductance”, which is the inverse of conductance.

So how does this show wiring turn signals to anything , if what you adding to already has say brake/run lights on it. This doesnt show how to add turn to a system that has brake and run lights. Or are you just adding more lights on and not using the vehicles already 1157/2057/4157 that uses run and brake lights.

Where is the warning light to tell you they are switched on ? What tells you one bulb has stopped working ? Why didn't you wire the flasher into the feed to the switch ? Save the extra fuse and the cable costs and time to install.

It allows you to use a much wider variety of switch and bulbs. Many switches are only rated for a very low amperage. So if I were to light up high amperage bulbs with a low amperage switch, it would burn out the switch. Relays open up your options greatly. Check out my other video without the relays for comparison.
