In this video, I show you how I would wire hazard lights (4-way flashers) into an existing turn signal circuit. This could be used for a hotrod, car, truck, motorcycle, ATV, dirt bike, side by side, go cart, or whatever kind of vehicle needs working hazard lights. There are many different methods of wiring 4 way Flashers, Hazards, and Turn Signals, but I prefer to wire them as I describe in the video because I feel like it is a safest method. Below is a list of the relays, the non-LED turn signal flasher, fuses, the incandescent 1157-style bulbs, 1157 style bulb sockets, and the 3 way toggle switch I used to make the entire circuit work properly.
Items used in this video (You may not need to buy in these quantities, but I did.)
🔗 5 Pack of 5-pin Bosch Style Relays - amzn.to/2OfiwXT

Make sure you have the correct bulbs. It’s very easy to put the wrong bulbs in and lose functionality. If you are 100000% sure you do, you’ll have to follow the electricity from the flasher to the rear bulbs and see where the flashing stops. Good luck! I’m cheering for you!

You'd have the grab a test light or multimeter to figure out how the factory switch works. Each manufacturer has different functionality built into their switches and you may only need a small part of the factory switch to trigger the relays. The relays control the lights, as seen in the video - So all you have to do is find any kind of functionality in your factory switch that will trigger the relays. If you can come up with a factory wiring diagram for your signal switch, and get it to me, I can probably help you make sense of it.

In my opinion, you’d probably want to use at least two bulbs for each side in that scenario. Otherwise you’d lose your turn signal when you pushed your brakes. I’m sure there is a way of doing this though. I’ll give it some thought. It could be a fun challenge.

Question? I have a ford E350 cube van. all my signals work including the dash indicator light. However, when I hit the hazard lights both front and back drivers are fine. The passenger side only the back hazards work. The front end does not flash and the right-hand indicator light is out. There are only 3 wires to the bulbs ground, running and flash. So, wiring to the bulb isn't an issue. replaced with 3 different bulbs and the same issue. from this video the hazards are set up by either left and or right. If it was a switch issue, the back passenger would be out as well, correct? I am stumped as to wherte to look next. and considering its a van front end, there is NO room under the hood.

@WiringRescue 2 жыл бұрын
I wonder if your light socket is damaged in some way. if you haven’t done so already, back probe the light socket or a nearby connector with a meter or test light to see if the electricity is making it out through the wires. If not, you’ll have to dig into the opposite end of the wires near the steering column and see if the power is coming out of the switch properly (it probably is). It’s a crappy process, but you basically have to chase the electricity from the bulb back to its source to find out where it is getting lost. I’d bet the issue is somewhere near the bulb socket though. That would be the most common. Also make sure you have the right bulbs in the rear too. I know you said it works, but make sure it’s actually the right one too. The wrong bulb in a different location can cause weird issues too. Good luck! I’m sorry it’s not a super easy solution for you!

This won’t work with brake lights, unless they are separate bulbs from turn signals. It depends. Is your switch rated at a high enough amperage to handle the amperage draw of the light bulbs? Are the wires and flasher also rated at a high enough amperage rating for the bulbs you are using? If so - then it should be fine. The only thing to watch out for at that point would be somebody in the future adding regular bulbs in place of LED’s and it burning the circuit. If you have the fuse properly sized though, it will pop the fuse before it burns the wires or switch. Hopefully that made sense. Lol. If not, I can try again.

I like this video. Nice. However, never in my 40 years of working with electronics have I ever seen relays being used for turn signals. Basic turn signals. That basic SPDT 20 Amp switch can handle that all on it's own. Removing then will cut down the wiring by 40%. Also the hazard switch can be done by a SPST switch and 2 diodes. Now if you wanna make the hazard button sleek and not so bulky, THEN the relays would make more sense.

I need some help. What could cause everything to work except for the rear right brake light? Flashers work everywhere except the rear right. The turn signal works everywhere except the rear right BUT when I hit the brake and have the right turn signal on, the brake light works. Both filaments work when I connect them directly to a 12v power supply for the lightbulb in question. Could it be a bad turn switch or the hazard switch? Any suggestions?

Very informative... Along with your last one with how to wire turn signals, easy to follow and understand,😉👍 this Hazard video maybe even make me think about adding hazards to my classic motorcycle that didn't have them originally it only had turn signals. My only question is now how about an explanation of how to isolate that circuit for brake lights if you use the white wire we're not supposed to be minding for running lights/tail lights or parking lamps, how do you wire the brake lights up with the turn signals and isolate front for back?

Great content! I'm hooked for sure. Is it possible to add led flashers to the automobile hazard light circuit in order to utilize the vehicle hazard switch instead of having to add an external switch? My thought is that if I could just tap into the hazard relay we could eliminate the need for an auxiliary switch.

wow, thanks hope to fix a single turn signal that does just does not work. On another note. I've tried step down converters and resistors but everything always gets so hot. What is a safe way to drop the car voltage from 12v to 6 volts without overheating. I would like an adjustable voltage but the small step down converter gets extremely hot. I am not an electrician and am a total noob. Maybe a general resistor that I can put in series to gradualy reduce the volage or is that dumb? Thanks for your videos. I have you as my home page and hope to learn a lot from these.

I have almost zero knowledge of electronics and I wanted to learn something by building a simple toy for my kid. I planned to use two groups of three red blinking LEDs each for "turn signals" and three white LEDs for "headlights". I also wanted to add a couple of green blinking LEDs for the signal lights on the "dashboard" when the blinkers are on, and one blue LED for the indicator that the headlights are on. Each group of turn signals would have one switch (single throw), there would be one more for the headlights and maybe one "main" switch for the whole circuit. I also wanted to add one more LED which would be on whenever the main switch is on. So in the last few days I've been browsing youtube for useful tutorials and that's how I found this one. And I like it :). Since I have an issue with my LEDs blinking at different frequencies (and I have no idea why that's happening), I'm now thinking about using relays and making something like you did in this video.
