In this video we'll be looking at a number of lines around Zürich served by the S14 commuter service.
If we were to go backwards at the start, we would be on a historical line that has been preserved by the DVZO association, which has its Depot in Bauma. This officially closed would have continued to the left of our track as signalled at the start. I hope one day to be able to document this railway.
We start on the Hinwil - Effretikon railway, which we deviate from at the first station, continuing on the Glatt valley railway to Wallisellen. From there we are on the original line between Winterthur and Zürich from 1855. Most InterCity trains now take the line we merge with in Oerlikon in order to travel via Zürich airport.
In Oerlikon the line splits into 3 different double tracked lines that lead to Zürich. We will be taking the newest and only line that allows an onward journey in a westerly direction beyond Zürich, without a change in direction. It was opened in 2014 and is known as the "Durchmesserlinie" (through line).
The other lines include the original line (middle tunnel) to Zürich via Wipkingen from 1856 and the Käferberg line (far right tunnel) that was opened in 1969 to give freight trains a direct connection to Altstetten and was completed with a connection to Zürich HB via Hardbrücke in 1982.
More to come.
I hope you enjoyed the video. If you'd like to donate, please click the following link. Donations will be used for equipment and software in order to bring you higher quality videos. www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr... Thanks for watching and have a great day!

At Wetzikon, a marvellous example of the "interconnectibility" of SBB trains. A pause while other trains arrive. I've experienced it at other junctions, and it's outstanding. Thanks for yet another great trip.

Gotta say though, it was good to see a station like that at Zürich HB with absolutely *NO* ugly advertising plastered over the walls. If you remember Sydney's underground line, you'll know what I mean.

Thank you for yet another beautiful video! I especially liked your little history inserts on some of the regional lines. What really surprised me is how late some of them were electrified, including the Altstetten-Zug line that was the last third of this trip. I was under the impression that all of Switzerland's lines had been electrified by no later than 1930!
@lorirocks777
@lorirocks777 Жыл бұрын
I think Switzerland had steam engines running through to the 60's, but coal shortages during WW II promted electrification of some smaller lines and even the conversion of a few steam locomotives to run under electricity with electric boilers. There are a few pictures of them on google with pantographs.

The greenery looks beautiful, something you don't often see in the USA, the houses look beautiful too. But just like here in the USA the walls having graffiti I guess is worldwide.I was wondering when the train went underground ( subway) like that the train had no headlights, what if the driver needed to see the tracks or know when the driver needed to change tracks?

Great action at Wetzikon's platforms. Way cool! 15:58 The bike path gets its own gated grade crossing. Don't see that every day. 20:46 Freight shunting (I think that's the proper word) at Schwerzenbach ZH. Nice. 33:20 A subway station?! Have we gotten to 14th Street-Union Square yet? 48:22 Anyone know the purpose behind the structure framing the siding on the right as the train approaches Birmensdorf ZH? 49:22 Time lapse where everybody suddenly disappears--except for the guys in orange standing with hands on hips. A common pose assumed by railroad B-and-B workers here in the United States, lol! I noticed the unusual, fractionalized voltage frequency of the catenary power in this and the previous video. Here in the U.S., mainline electric railroads settled on 25Hz as the standard (Modern technology now permits utilization of 60-cycle commercial power.) Can anybody explain the reason behind Switzerland's choice? Thank you, Andrea (whichever one you are) and lorirocks for bringing us a look at local service (on what I take it are commuter lines) through the high-density-population region around Zurich. Well done.
@lorirocks777
@lorirocks777 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your commentary =) I have a feeling that the strange frequency owes to the motors used at the time for generating power, many of which were at hydroelectric plants.
@michaela.chmieloski3196
@michaela.chmieloski3196 Жыл бұрын
@@lorirocks777 You're welcome regarding the commentary. I'm just curious how an operational frequency of 16.7 Hertz got chosen. Not 15 cycles, not 17.5 or 20 Hz, but 16.7. Seems like there must be a good story behind the number.

@@andreasgasser5823 Thanks for your reply. Changing operational AC electrical frequency is rather involved so I'm hoping for a little clarification, Andreas. Do you know HOW the railway, back at the time of electrification, executed this "thirding" of the national grid's frequency? I'm not busting your chops, I truly want to know.
