For anyone watching who is who isn't a professional mechanic and is attempting repairs that involve removing the valve body, I would recommend using a plastic scraper against any of the mating surfaces on the valve body or transmission case to remove gasket material. Using a plastic scraper will help you to avoid gouging any of the metal. That way you wont get any leaks when you put everything back together. Great video! Liked and subbed

I used an angle grinder with a rust remover adapter. It was going well until the adapter caught the edge of the gasket and bent it... I saw some other guy putting the separator plate into boiling water and then just scraping it off.

you can also weld a nut to the bel housing bolt and the heat will allow you to break it loose and remove it.

I could see that working. Just need to be careful around the aluminum parts of the transmission housing as they will melt at relatively low temperatures.

Bell housing bolts: 1) Heat with heat gun for easy removal... heat the aluminum boss. 2) If one still remains, a cold chisel with a few love taps will usually get the screw to turn. Drilling is excessive work, and easy outs are generally a waste of time. Heat is best... A plain heat gun on HI does it.

mega thumbs up. i have used a tap to thread a couple of the front pump holes so can stick a couple bolts in it to pull the pump. be sure to pull the one solenoid out of the front pump so dont break it. Why oh why dont they put a connector on the lock up solenoid? I guess so they can get mega dollah to change just the solenoid or the wiring harness. Typical of car manu's to get an extra buck.

So you think if I just wanted to fix my 3/4 on a high mileage trans with just a cheap transtec kit that comes with the piston and clutches and just check for leaks at the check ball and just rebuild the drum but leave the planetary gear and everything else behind it alone I’d be good?

Yes, as long as your hard parts are in good shape, you could just replace the clutches (frictions & steels) and pistons.

Most likely a worn out 3/4 clutch pack or a bad sprag.

I cant remove the ring gear because the forward planetary broke and left the tail part of it on the shaft yikes I might need another case i have no idea on how to remove it

Oh, wow. That sounds rough. Do what you can to remove it, but you might be correct on getting a new case

Once the transmission is completely disassembled, how do you recommend cleaning the casing? Is it okay to pressure wash? Can you “hot tank” it in boiling water?

The case is aluminum, so you can use water. Just be 110% sure that it is completely dry before you begin reassembly. Personally, I use paint thinner in my wash station to clean everything

Doing a teardown myself and wanted to point out there is a ninth bearing in the center near the rear of the valve body, may be held in by a retainer, can’t tell. I noticed it after dumping trans fluid and didn’t need to remove it so I didn’t try.

I have a 4l60e I need to swap input shafts on to be able to mate to a ls style engine, in order to remove the whole drum assembly does the pan and everything under the pan have to be removed to pull the drum assembly? Or can I just open the front and undo the band and slide the drum out?

Oh, wow. That part must have got chopped in the video editing process. I have a few different sets of snap ring pliers and some small flathead screwdrivers that I remember trying when I was doing that

FYI I found out that there are 3 main types of snap ring pliers. Angled (which are the main ones out there) then there are straight and curved ones. I have all three now, but I was able to get that snap ring with ease using the curved pair. Allowed me to get into the recessed groove the ring was in.

What solutions do you use to clean your transmission parts? My transmission exterior has oil and sand caked on it and the interior has small metal debri and shaving in it, thank you for a great video.

I plug the holes and pressure wash the outside. Scrub tough areas with a metal brush and paint thinner. I use paint thinner or mineral oil as a cleaner inside and out.

This is a 4l60e in a 2003 Chevy Tahoe. Engine is 5.3L Vortec. This is the transmission that goes in any Tahoe, suburban, Yukon, Yukon XL, Sierra, and Silverado from 1993 through 2009

There are several things it could be. No reverse: “lo-reverse” clutches are worn out, fluid leak in the reverse apply circuit, or broken sunshell are common problems. It's difficult to tell until you open the transmission up

if you get a stuck bolt just use a rotary disk to cut a channel in it and then walk it out with a flat head screw driver.

That is a great way to do it. However, as a DIY instructional, I try to use only common tools that most people have. You are assuming access to a welder and knowledge of how to use it safely near an aluminum housing. I do have a welder, but most people don't and I make these videos for most people.

You stripped out the 2 case bolts because you did not seat the torx bit into the bolt. I could not help but to LOL OUT LOUD.....putting pieces in baggies. (Face palm) That was a washer on the sun shell, not a bushing. And remove the extension housing (tail shaft) seal with a screwdriver and hammer BEFORE you remove the housing. It is more stable. And why not throw away the large "o" ring when you remove the rear housing? Oh yeah, you know how to build a transmission and don't have a rear piston removal tool? W H A T ??????
