Great, informative video. I like your attention to safety and how you try to give as much info as possible. A couple things I found out the hard way: 1. If the old trans went out, you need to flush the oil cooler with brake cleaner and compressed air or it can fill your newly rebuilt transmission with junk. 2. Lube the back of the crank with grease before you stick the torque converter in there. This allows the converter to move forward and back as the flexplate flexes. 3. Put the exhaust above the crossmember but don’t attach it until you put the inside bolt on the driver’s side in the crossmember or the bolt will have to go in backwards from the rest. 4. If you installed a new converter too, when you bolt it to the flexplate, make sure there is less than 3/16” gap between them. If not, you will need washers to close the gap. 5. Depending on the year, the starter wires are too short to install until the starter is mounted. Your video on removing the hot glue connectors on the neutral safety switch saved me a huge headache! Keep up the great work!

My transmission didn't have a catastrophic failure, so I'm fine with flushing the lines. If it did have a catastrophic failure, I would install an auxiliary cooler and bypass the trans cooler in the radiator. I have a video on the auxiliary cooler install.

Just did a full rebuild on my 01 jimmy. It's a lot more in depth for a 1st timer but I truly enjoyed rebuilding the tranny, adding sonnax shift kit, parts of transgo shift kit, corvette servo and a sonnax sun shell which was my problem in the first case. Totally stripped out 😆. But I would like to thank you two on a job well done. Especially with the feeler gauges, tolerances, and the confidence to do this job. I would've been up shit creek if not for you 2. I had a dam check ball fall into the side of the transmission 😆 and I double checked to make sure the c clips on the pump valve were fully seated then it got away from me and into the transmission again 🤦 but shit, I didn't even mind digging it out lol. Now I know I can rebuild one of these things and next would be engine dismantling but that's for another time. Much respect from Saskatchewan Canada 🇨🇦

@dudewecanfixit Жыл бұрын
First, turn the truck off and chock the wheels. Try disconnecting the shifter linkage cable and manually moving the linkage on the transmission forward into the park position and see if that keeps it from rolling. Also, the light could be the park neutral safety switch not adjusted correctly.

Just gonna have to shovel snow when I go to take it in and out lol. I’m just making sure I get a kit that has the pistons in it, cause I figure if it’s not that check ball in the housing it’s gotta be the pistons that caused the 3/4 to go bad. Originally I hoped it was just a solenoid so I dropped the pan twice trying to fix it but now when I drive it I can tell it hits 3rd but there’s just a lot of rpm before you get any sort of pull feel out of the pedal then it just drops back into 2 when it gets around 4k
@dudewecanfixit4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you have it figured out. Sounds like the frictions and steels are toast. Definitely replace the pistons and verify the check ball doesn't leak. Also look into reaming out and replacing the AFL valve in the valve body. You should also replace the TCC valve, these wear out and 3-4 apply fluid pressure can be reduced increasing slippage and burnout of clutches. Sonnax and transgo make kits for these repairs.

So I just finished installing my rebuilt transmission in my 2001 Yukon 5.3 RWD. Do I need to hook up a scan tool and reteach, or am I good to go? The one that I pulled seems to have been a factory build, and the one that I installed is a different one that I upgraded some of the parts, both being 4L60Es.

There is no relearn procedure. Just install it and make sure the fluid level is correct

I lost connection from the TCM to the ECM on my Tahoe, my car had caught on fire and it burned some of the wires. Not sure if it got to any of the wires that have to do with the transmission connection but do I have to remove the crossmember and my starter just to get to the transmission connectors? @@dudewecanfixit I mean the distance the torque converter rides from the fully engaged position in the pump. Sometimes when its bolted down to the flex plate it will pull back out of the pump too far so I shim the torque converter-flex plate. If its too far into the pump, (under load) the flex plate can force it too far into the pump and cause premature pump failure. I usually like to see the torque converter 1/8" out from fully engaged.
@dudewecanfixit2 жыл бұрын
That is very good information. I haven't taken a transmission out that had shims on the torque converter, so I have never put them back in either. No issues so far, but I will definitely keep that in mind on the next one!
@budmanzoom44412 жыл бұрын
@@dudewecanfixit It usually is a problem with rebuilt Torque Converts. When they weld them back together they are shorter and the TC doesn't fully engage the pump. They can also be welded together too long.

Watch your RPMs and count your shift points. You should have four shift points. 1st to 2nd gear 2nd to 3rd gear 3rd to 4th gear Torque converter lockup (about a 200 rpm drop) once you are cruising.

Ok so I have a 99 Silverado I followed your video for the rebuild and I've removed and done these before but apparently I didn't get the second bump in like I thought I did. I wrecked the pump drive when I put it together the truck let me either by sheer weight or a bit of force from bolts but whatever. Do you have/know or anyone on here know the torque converter setback for a 1999 Silverado 5.3? But yes very important step.
@dudewecanfixit Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, I do not have those specs available. If you find out, please share them with us.
@dhonnoll78 Жыл бұрын
As a general rule you should not be able to get your fingers behind the torque converter when fully seated. Also, when fully seated, if you put a level a 2x4 (not s Lowe's or Home Depot one but a streight one) or some streight edge tip to tip on the bell housing torque converter should be behind that When installing. Torque converter should NOT touch flexplate. If it touches before trans.iddion is fully seated take it back down and fully seat torque converter. Once trans is fully seated torque converter will still not quite touch flexplate but be very close there will be clearance. Take your time with this step to keep from wrecking a pump drive like k did kiddos. Because if your are like. Me I wrecked the pump drive used another doner rebuilt and knocked band off of its stud without knowing and had PRN1 and 3 no 2 and 4. Had to remove it AGAIN to put the band on.

On the bright side I could probably remove a 2wd 4LSlippyE in about 40 min if I had a lift.
