As a Bucs fan, I'm naturally biased and loved every minute of SB37. After watching horrible seasons from 1984 when I moved to Tampa, it was SO worth the wait. That said, Callahan was stupid to not change ANYTHING out of Gruden's playbook. No wonder Gru knew everything the Raiders tried to play.

Callahan's time at Nebraska is considered a failure. But in actuality it was more like "meh." His 1st and 4th (final) season were losing seasons but in between he had two winning seasons and an appearance in the Big XII championship and the Cotton Bowl. But in order to meet the standards Tom Osborne set in Lincoln, you need to be a balanced team on both sides of the ball. You weren't gonna get that with the offense heavy Callahan. In his losing seasons there were two occasions his defense gave up 70+ points.
@pilotdog684 жыл бұрын
@@TheMrBmurray oh I know. But he was absolutely hated at the time
@cornfednebraskaneer4 жыл бұрын
@@TheMrBmurray His biggest problem was that he was incredibly conceited, in '04 especially. The zone blocking scheme was tough for our big bulldozers to pick up on, but once they finally did, Cory Ross was able to hit cracks and find yardage. What does Callahan do? Throws the ball over and over. I know he wanted to bring in his style, but he was cutting off the nose to spite the face. The losses to Southern Miss and Iowa State in '04 were absolute coaching failures on both sides of the ball. If he would've kept Pelini as DC instead of Cosgrove, we would've been fine. Pederson destroyed our program by bringing in a disgraced NFL washout that never should have stepped foot in Lincoln.

Firing Gruden then him destroying us in the Superbowl. Al Davis's horrid draft busts & free agents (Larry Brown, Javon Walker, D'Anglo Hall, Aaron Brooks, etc, etc, etc) Lane Kiffen & the parade of coaches. Jamarcus Russell. Darius Heyward-Bey? @burke6154 жыл бұрын
They got hosed, but they got hosed by the rule, not by the ref. The ref correctly applied the rule, as it had been applied all season. The thing that sticks out in my mind about this situation is how did the buccs know the Raiders game plan two weeks before the Super Bowl if the Raiders didn't know it until two days before and the fact that the Raiders beat that same buccs team the year before by using a power run game lets me know Callahan threw the game on purpose
@rtdsbg1 Жыл бұрын
There was only one week between the championship game and Super Bowl 37. The Bucs defensive plan all along was to defend against a pass heavy offense because that's what got the Raiders to the Super Bowl and Rich Gannon his MVP. The Raiders game plan was to run the ball because the bucs front 7 was fast but undersized, and some teams had found some success running the ball up the middle on them. Then Callahan probably figured passing the ball was their bread and butter, and he shouldn't change that in the Super Bowl. Gruden, being the architect of the Raiders offense, and having the number 1 defense, with the defensive player of the year in Derrick Brooks, means that the raiders were never going to win the game.

I dont agree with this theory solely because I do not think the raiders could come up with a strategy to slow down the Buccaneers. The game that post season against the Eagles shows how the Bucs could counter an offense (in my opinion) wildly better then the Raiders. Something important to remember is the 2002 Bucs weren't just the #1 passing defense that year, they remain the #1 passing defense of ALL TIME. It doesn't matter what gameplan Callahan brought into the game - the Bucs were going to crush either way.

Especially with Gruden knowing the call signals since they didn't change audibles nor snap counts
@B___8484 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they beat the Eagles in philly to get there, they would have clapped the Raiders regardless
@abdiasvelasquez11854 жыл бұрын
Infamous Horse they had all year long to change the gameplan. You tell me who’s fault is it?
@InfamousHorse4 жыл бұрын
@@abdiasvelasquez1185 It's 100% the coaching staff for not implementing new call signals and audible reads, BUT I will say who would have thought that the Buccs were going to face off against the Raiders in the SB. I can understand keeping the system that has gotten them success. With that, Bill let the team down with his playcalling in the SB same way the Seahawks destroyed the Broncos.
@abdiasvelasquez11854 жыл бұрын
Infamous Horse exactly. I’m tired of people saying gruden knew the raider’s playbook, which he did but who wouldn’t have took advantage of that? Not grudens fault the other team didn’t change it up and I feel bad for what Bill did to the raiders

“You have six days, to study your opponent.“ if you don’t start studying your opponents well before then, and have your game plan ready to go at the beginning of the week you’ve already lost.
@dillondank56624 жыл бұрын
You dont need to study when you have the other teams playbook and you know 80% of the opposing players tendencies.
@EO-jr7li4 жыл бұрын
Dillon Dank LOL, true in this case, but generally speaking you should have a game plan ready to go at the beginning of the week, and you should have your players practicing it and learning it that entire week.

Being a Raider Fan , I remember this season Tuck Rule made the Patriots who they have been and the Raiders go downhill after that. That Super Bowl it looked like the Raiders didn’t change anything every play , every pass , everything Gruden knew and the Bucs defense was good already with them knowing that information made them unstoppable

If you read the tuck rule, it’s a fumble by their own definition. The ball was already touched by the second hand before the fumble occurred.
