Nice list. Are you aware of the history of the P-51 Mustang ? It was originally designed to a British requirement in 1940 by North American and named the Mustang by the British, but found lacking with the original Allison engine for high altitude use, so was used for Ground Attack and Army Co-operation (Spotting) duties. It was only when it was tested in England with a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine (the same engine as the Spitfire) instead of the original Allison engine and then subsequently fitted on the production line in the USA with Packard (USA) licence built Rolls-Royce Merlin engines and fitted with .50 cal guns, instead of the original British .303 machine guns (that were in use on the Spitfire and Hurricane) it became the legend it is and there is no doubt it is a legend. We both in the UK and the USA can be equally very proud of.

I would have chosen the F4U Corsair over the P-51. It was a beast. But, after the Brits figured out how to land it on a carrier, the real potential of this plane was unleashed. It had the longest production run of any U.S. piston engine fighter. It was used in WWII and Korea. Also, Honduras kept them in service until 1979.

It's too hard to make a Top-5 for American aircraft... this nation has produced so many amazing aircraft dating back to the very first true aircraft: the Wright Brother's 1903 Flyer. I think the indesputable fact is the SR-71 is the greatest aircraft ever made, but I'll go ahead and make a Top-20 right here just to get things started. Keep in mind the list isn't about performance, it's about the historical impact and reputation of the aircraft. 20 - F-18 Hornet 19 - F4U Corsair 18 - F-16 Falcon 17 - F-4 Phantom 16 - F-22 Raptor 15 - F117 Nighthawk 14 - F-86 Sabre 13 - B-52 Stratofortress 12 - Cessna 172 Skyhawk 11 - F-15 Eagle 10 - P-38 Lightning 9 - B-29 Superfortress 8 - P-47 Thunderbolt 7 - A-10 Warthog 6 - B-17 Flying Fortress 5 - Boeing 747 4 - Wright Brother's 1903 Flyer 3 - F-14 Tomcat 2 - P-51 Mustang 1 - SR-71 Blackbird Honorable Mention: Too many to list... C-47, F6F Hellcat (slaughtered enemy fighters by the truckload), B2, B1, C-130, Space Shuttle (yeah it's a glider... but it went to space over 100 times and both losses were due to the external rockets, not the shuttle itself), P-40 (reputation is unfair, combat records indicate it performed very well), F111, A6E, C5, C17, V22, etc etc etc....
@jaycooper28126 жыл бұрын

I would not pick any WW2 fighter aircraft. Too many too close to call. P-38, P-51, Hellcat, Corsair, P-47 were all great. The fact that the US could produce so many great planes in a the 4 years of WW2 was amazing. Now, it takes us 15 years to go from concept to orders, ridiculous. By the time we get a plane produced, it is already obsolete. Look at the F-22 - obsolete electronics and avionics. How can any plane win with systems controlled by CPUs made in 1999???

Your flag-waving is pretty childish. Yes, the Mustang was definitely an American plane designed in 1940 to meet the requirements of the British Purchasing Commission, while the Spitfire had already been flying for 4 years. Mmmhh...why would the Brits want to buy an American plane when they had the Spitfire? Answer: Two different planes, two different roles. The P-51 Mustang's performance was later improved with the adoption of the British-designed US-built Merlin engine. If you really want to compare the two planes, you need to specify which versions you have in mind.
@guywilloughby33836 жыл бұрын
timothy phillips well I am British but at the end of the day the mustang although it was produced initially for the RAF was still designed and built by the North American company and therefore it is an American aircraft now yes the early models fitted with the Allison engine we're not very good at high altitude and so the British fitted the Merlin engine which was proven to be a great success however that is no reason to condemn it
