Hey foresty! I have exactly the same tent, I had to bail on my first time using it because of high winds also! I had a surprise wind storm in Kananaskis that was brutal. I've since gone back out again and its fantastic. As you say, for solo hikers I use it more as a portable mini basecamp instead of a multiday hiking rig. Regarding pegging it out safely - I was taught by an old logger to dig down in the snow, and place the peg flat making a T shape with the tent line as the bottom of the T and the peg laying perpendicular to the tent as the top of the T. Tie/wrap the line around the peg, then bury it. Be warned, this works almost too well and getting your pegs out in the morning can be really tough!

I've spent a lot of time in the woods and never thought to myself "Hmmm, don't want to get crushed and burned to death tonight, better bail." But that was the right thing to do there, where a situation could have gotten completely out of hand at any time. Nice tent though. Never really considered one for myself, but I'm not in the Canadian Rockies either LOL. Once again, thanks for taking us along. Looking forward to the next one already.

Good video. I’ve had the same sleepless hot tent nights. I’ve heard trees fall and in bed they always sound close. I’ve also had the ground start smoking and nearly catch fire under the stove. Make sure you remove sticks and pinecones. I now prefer to let it burn out and make a fire in the morning unless I am packing up right away.

Had a similar moment a few years ago camping under some big oak trees during a storm. Didn't like the way they were blowing so in the middle of the night we hooked up the truck and moved the trailer to a better spot. Went back a few months later and the tree i was worried about had indeed toppled over since then. Felt like I avoided some final destination type results.

Sincerely hoping you have a better experience next time! If I'm remembering right, you are usually tenting out in the open unless you're in a shelter like the little cabin you built or the ones you've visited. All that to say maybe there's a comfort level that comes with more time using it. It's new after all and you'd been dreaming of it for a long time, so maybe it'll meet those expectations in the future? I for one love your videos and the way you and rocko share your lives with us.

I use reflectix on my windows for insulation, can even double up on it. Another idea is using a small still to distill water on the wood stove and the radiant heat would be transferred to water and stay warmer 😊

So not the gear, just picked a bad location for your camp, hence the need to bail. Even the most experienced campers have made that error sir! Have not had much experience with hot stoves, but from what I have seen. Most solo campers allow it to burn down before sleeping and depend on their sleeping bags and blankets for warmth. Others set a timer and wake up at regular intervals to feed and monitor the stove during the night. It was a great video Forest, as always thanks for sharing!

Beautiful footage in the beginning! Again, I'm always glad to see you bail in an ify situation. I've dreamed of having one of those hot tents - they do seem cool - but I've only ever seen them in bushcraft vlogs where everything "appears" to go well, but that usually just means it's a sponsorship . I love that you're transparent. :)

I'd like to complement you on two things if I may - 1) I sincerely appreciate that you don't sugarcoat your experiences. Too many KZbinrs feel that embelishing the real is nessessary, but it comes across as it is, which is inauthentic 2) You realy put some effort into your videography - it shows.
