Here's 5 things that trigger my IBS, but weirdly, they're all totally low FODMAP or not related to FODMAPs at all.
Whilst I try my best to follow the low FODMAP diet, there's still quite a few things that Mark and I can't eat. All of these things are low FODMAP, but hit us both pretty hard. Do they affect you too? Please let me know in the comments below.
Are there any other foods or drinks that are low FODMAP which you can't tolerate?

It’s to the point I do not eat out because I feel like it’s Russian roulette is it? Or maybe not? 95% of the time it does affect me. Some of my meds do as well.

What's so eye opening is, I've struggled with IBS all my life and people told me I was "being weak, whining, being picky"....and the flares and etc, people laugh at or think it is funny, when we are in severe pain. There needs to be more sensitivity to our condition. I'm a Chef and Baker so, I love and cook a variety of foods and I'm really not picky at all, I just can NOT literally properly digest various foods. Everyone is different.

I've had some gruesome injuries that would bring most people to extreme tears if they happened to them. And by comparison, those injuries were a 1 or 2 on the pain scale compared to the pain of IBS. An IBS flare-up is so extremely painful, unrelenting, and all-consuming that nothing I've ever felt remotely compares. Hours upon hours of undulating waves of extreme pain that makes me vomit from the pain.

About the cold carbs, my nutritionist told me that when starch is heated and then cooled down (even if it's heated again) it goes through a process of cristalization, which is great for people with no gut problems because your body absorbs less starch from these foods, but I guess that for us it becomes a problem since we have to get rid of it somehow and our stomach is a bit lazy! Hope it helps!

@@Mystomach Hi. I was diagnosed about 15 years ago upon a CT scan I believe, finding the classic open/close pattern’s throughout my whole gut (at the time, mostly ileum was inflamed). At the time I had lots of bloody diarrhea and I basically stopped eating almost everything and started doing green veggie juicing, and for many many years I just managed with a gluten free diet and controlled most of the symptoms, like stomach aches and cramps, but still wit on and off diarrhea. Nowadays, I’m still med-free but have a much varied diet and manage with occasional kaopectate (bismuth is an effective relatively non-toxic cheap IBD management tool that you could use intermittently…never more than a couple months on a daily basis) and lots of potent antioxidants (vitamin C during day, melatonin for sleep) and stress management. This fight is 50% on your head and 50% with sustaining a clean diet (low in red meat due to heme-iron harms, high in omega oils, high in insoluble fiber, low in carbs + easy to digest). I also occasionally supplement with B12 (if I’m eating vegetarian), zinc, vitamin K (if I’m not getting enough greens) and treat myself against sulfur reducing bacteria with Malva sylvestris, molybdenum and again, bismuth (in peptobismol and Kaopectate). I also drink kombucha, daily, like kefir and yogurt to keep a diverse and functionally complete microbiota which also protects me from bad microbes. It’s a lot, I know. Good luck!

When carbs cool down the starches inside them change to resistant starches that cannot be digested. For normal people that is a good thing but for IBS sufferers it is really bad, because resistant starches are food for the bad bacteria. This is taken partly from James Wong's book 'How to eat better' in which he explains the resistant starches and from online info from the Monarch University. Hope this helps :-) Thanks so much for your videos, they are super helpful! PS: the Lactofree cream chees is the most delicious devil, it is devastating for me. Maybe the FOD map is not for you. Maybe you just have some allergies and need to be tested and stay away from those foods. I think IBS is caused by so many factors but it also causes so many factors like allergies, autoimmune diseases, pain ,seasonal allergies etc. I think the point of doing this is to give your digestive system a break so that you can start to heal and tolerate some things you couldn’t after a while. Sometimes I would imagine you have to permanently eliminate things because there’s so much damage that has been done.

Wow. I was looking for videos on low fodmap breakfast ideas because I can’t keep spending so much money per meal at my job’s cafeteria or on DoorDash and everything from either source seems to be a problem for my stomach. Saw this video and decided to check it out. This explains why my cousin told me her son struggles with beef. I told her that didn’t make sense as meats aren’t fodmaps, so it must be the garlic and onion seasoning she puts on it. It’s probably all three. I’ve also been struggling with lemonade. Fizzy or not, once I drink it, it doesn’t wanna come back out and neither does anything else I consume. No pain, just constipation. I’m getting tired of how sensitive my stomach is. Also tired of people telling me I just need to stress less or drink honey or some fancy water or bla bla bla. If it was that simple, they’d have told all the dr’s and fixed each of us the first time we went in for a checkup. Anyway, thanks for the pointers. I got your purple book. Now I just have to learn how to use a food scale and cook😅

This is so sad, I'm so sorry for you, it seems like you don't have a single chill day😫 I've found that caffeine, dairy products in general, fizzy drinks and cold carbs are the worst for me, I can't eat them without feeling bloated and having a ton of gas and pain after (sorry if it sounds disgusting xd). But I think rinsing rice after cooking can help, maybe because a lot of starch is eliminated in the process. Also I've noticed that food combining can be helpful, and for me eating too much raw veggies (even low-fodmap ones) is a big mistake. I hope it gets better, you deserve it😃😃lots of love to you and Mark💓

What makes Becky's contributions so useful is that she is not reading out of a hymn book but narrating from personal expeirence. It is like the difference between a journalist on the spot and someone reporting from an office. You can see this with her experience of cold carbohydrates. They are not officially given as bad for IBS but for some IBS sufferers they may be and she warns us about them, rightly not caring what any "official line" is. This is what I call useful medical advice! And yes everyone is different. Half a bottle of wine does me no harm but most so called "soothing teas" send my stomach churning around! I can confirm reports about rhum. Alcohol which i have to avoid are: sweet reinforced drinks (eg Baileys), rhum, champagne, beer.

Alcohol, coffee they are like poison for me, immediate or bad lasting effects starting from 2nd days of consumption. Lactose free milk also troubles me, but mixing with turmeric gives some relief, though i cant have it regularly. I can not have any food everyday, variation is the only way to go. Boiled eggs can trouble too. I feel chicken(lean meat) is the safest to have on a regular basis, good to have the antibiotic free chicken.Rice products are safer but apparently being fully rice dependant is not good since it has arsenic in it and can be carcinogenic, so some keep varying your means with whatever limited options are there. And yes spinach also creates trouble if i have it consecutively. IN fruit i can say only blueberry feels safer. I have gerd, so citrus fruit is difficult for me.

Good + useful video! Something that I find triggering are certain preservatives, some effect me as badly as my worst FODMAP triggers. Also malt barley makes me feel gross. High fat/sugar, caffeine, alcohol are also ones for me too 😁

Hi Becky, I am on the fodmap Monash one. There are definitely some things I cannot have. Yesterday I had 1/2 banana that was bit ripe, then I had I piece of hard cheese and slice of ham... and that overdid it. My symptoms are rubbish... I just start burping non stop from all the gas. I love my wine but I think that’s out the door now. And so I bought gin, but tonic water is bubbly... blow. I do eat a lot of potatoes as they are my go to vegetable as i get so down on what I can eat. No onion, no garlic and I do usually reheat my potatoes- well. Cheers.

Dr.John Axe video on IBS is very good. and Becky Excaell.. your video IS so good. Thank you. I always felt any COLD drink or food goesi in to our body has to be room temperature (the body breaks down to body temp before it can process the food) And if i drank lemon water cold, i could hear my stomack grumbling. then to the bathroom. yep our body tells us. I wear a lite kotex (always) pad to give me a headstart.

I'm in constant pain and forever bloated and it's affecting my everyday life n have had to leave serveral jobs as a result. I've tried low FODMAP diet it can help me for a day then back to square one. As you said there are still definitely a lot of trigger foods in a low FODMAP diet. Hopefully one day soon we can all find a solution to this problem and live more freely !

Lastly, food fiber when cooked, heated and humidified, becomes soft and pliable. When cooked fiber is refrigerated the moisture is drawn out of the fiber by the low humidity of the refrigerator and the fiber becomes hard again. Some foods can be reheated with water and rehumidified while other can't be. Nuking only heats the water it does not soften the fiber because it doesn't force the water into the food fibers. Gotta take the time to put it on the stove in a pan with a lid and a little water. Think about it for a few minutes and it will make sense.

Sugar used to hurt me so badly, but after going on some anti anxiety medication, I can weirdly tolerate it again? I still avoid it, but when I have coffee I put a small bit of maple syrup in to take away the bitterness. Egg whites and chicken ALWAYS kill my stomach. But egg yolks don't hurt me, and I can have turkey, so it's not a poultry allergy. Steaks can also give me a tummy ache, but I'm ok with ground beef or a hamburger--it's just the slab of a steak that can give me pains. Lemon is another thing I can't go anywhere near.
@BeckyExcell
@BeckyExcell 6 жыл бұрын
Wow that is quite a random list really. I've heard though that egg whites can be quite an irritant for some people... at least the yolk is the best bit!! Very strange with the chicken and turkey thing!! I can't imagine how that works when they are so similar! I think steak can be quite hard to digest sometimes so that might make sense. Loads of people also seem to have problems with lemon! The body is a weird thing how it can change so much though! xx

Like you I can’t do caffeine, I can however tolerate decaf tea and coffee. Sugary foods, dairy and alcohol I can tolerate occasionally for a meal out but if on holiday for example (we like to cruise!) I find having those items daily will accumulate and result in IBS-D episode a few days in and has in extreme resulted in me passing out.

On human design they show that is the way we eat, not really what we eat.. And some people feel better with hot food, some people digest better with sounds, some people can't mix food.. Each person has a different way to digest.. I didn't REALLy try mine. But my digestion on human design say that I should eat one by one separately and the more nature as possible, not many sauces etc..

But I feel like I can totally relate with every single problem you mention on your videos! Never thought about the cold carb though, so I'll definitely try that out. Fizzy drinks are a major problem and I haven't had them since early teen years. High fat.rich foods are ones I also avoid like the plague. Becky Excell oh you can also replenish your colon with plain kefir in enema form. It helps you heal quicker and put some good bacteria in the intestines. Any probiotics we put in our stomach doesn't really make it to our colons, very small amount. Most gets destroyed before it hits even the small intestine...

Yes people think I’m crazy because I shake all the fizz out before drinking it and really the only soda I drink is GingerAle and only when I have had an upset despite the HFCS. Weird. Yes cold cuts are murder on me along with every artificial sweetener there is including Stevia. I’ve met a lot of people over the years that don’t tolerate the chemicals that are in the food chain like the BHA BHT in them. You didn’t mention, or I missed it, about gums like Xanthan gum. They are everywhere in the food chain and it’s main side effect is gut issues. Thanks again.

Dr. Andy Cutler says it's fine to eat red meat for thiol sensitive people - it agrees with me, but like you say"everyone is so different." I do know that when someone has very cold drinks and food, the body has to work on getting it to room temp. before attempting to digest it. So it's hard on the digestive system according to Ayurvedic.

Cold intolerance? Or histamine? I found out I have a histamine intolerance before learning about the FODMAP diet and sibo. The "cold intolerance" you describe might actually be a histamine response. That means a food need to be cooked quickly, and left overs are a no go since the histamine build over time and get worse. Try avoiding left overs and slow cooked foods.

It is not entirely clear the extent to which coffee is a negative trigger because it speeds up bowel motility and whether there are other factors at play. I have cut my coffee drinking down from about five cups a day to one or two. Thats a compromise which I can live with but agreed coffee isnt the best thing for IBS. What experience do people have of decaffinated coffee? I find that commomile tea is calming and doesnt stress. Look out for herbal tea mixtures because it just takes one ingredient... I think fenchel is bad for me.

Another thing you should be careful about on a low fodmap gluten free diet is eating too much rice. All rice contains small amounts of arsenic which can cause stomach issues . Its not recommended to have more than 3 servings a week. i find it easy now only cooking for myself to make rice or noodles and i was just thinking its also in flour mixes and bread eek. You may say large parts of the world eat rice but there are villagers in Bangladesh where there is a lot of arsenic in the water supply and thus rice grown that have high rates of cancer from arsenic poisoning. Worth considering if you have symptoms still.
