One thing I find positive is the recent trend for older women to let their hair go grey and work with it. I love this way of thinking in general, it's a very much needed message. Thanks.

Where have you been all my life? For years I have tried to conform myself to the marketed image of beauty. Growing up in the 70's and 80's there were images of long legged bronze beauties with perfect features and blond hair. Whereas I was dark haired, paled skin, with not so long legged I felt substandard until through age and wisdom, I started to realize my uniqueness and embraced my own beauty. I am passing this video along to my DIL.

A good exercise for learning to see essences could be to: describe people you know/celebrities you know well, without describing any of their physical features.

Thank you for posting on this topic. Although I know that self esteem issues are ubiquitous in today’s society, it still seems undercover and almost taboo to talk about not liking one’s own appearance. I’ve struggled with feeling very ugly my whole life, to the point of suicide ideation, not leaving the house, and in general dimming my personality down so people don’t take offense to my ugliness. Trying to talk to anyone about this (besides a therapist, I guess) gets me no where, and no one will validate or relate to me. I feel so lonely in my day to day life. I subbed, I enjoy your content and think you’re absolutely lovely. Thanks again for the video.

I personally find the essence part the hardest to determine! Not only because of the over compensation aspect, but also because different people, different contexts bring out different aspects of myself. And because I'm extremely introverted I have this striking contrast in behavior. So it kind of feels like if I were to find my essence, I would have to choose some aspects of myself as opposed to others... Does that make sense? Did you struggle with something like this, Elyssa? I'd also like to add that for the most time I thought this was a struggle only I had, about my "real personality" I mean. But one time I was watching Stephen Colbert interviewing someone, which I wish I could remember who because it resonated so much with me and I'd love to find that clip... but anyway, Colbert shared about a feeling he always had that he could never be his complete self with someone, because of the same reasons I talked about: different contexts, different facets.

I think I understand what you are saying here. I know for the fact that most people will adjust thier behavior to mirror/compliment/relate to the person you are speaking with. I think it is fundamental and normal behavior that helps us to connect with others and show that we appreciate them. Some people, of course, only hear themselves, but that is a different story. If I am in the different country, I will start mimicking the native speech, maneuvers etc. Even though very subtle but still, mirroring. And, omg what about all the influences of the media!!!! To help find your essence, I think we have to think of the time then we alone, what do we like to do, what are our body movements look like, are we fast and furious in our actions or are we soft and graceful etc. Cheers!!!!♥️💃♥️ Its fun though.

I totally agree with you. I think that getting to know one's essence it's a process and takes time. As an adaptable and highly empathic person connected to different cultures I have experienced that feeling of being airy or mutable very often. Experimenting helped me a lot but then I started to truly observe what I liked and didn't liked for myself. How it felt to wear something to my senses depending on color, texture, silhouette, type of garment, etc. For example, I prefer trousers over skirts, I love soft and texturised materials and mostly medium to dark colors. I love refined beauty but I am also practical and have a strong drive. So I can feel that there is a combination of yin and yang in me. At the beginning it was confusing because we tend to think that those are contradictory but I can see now that they are complementary parts of me.

By watching different women on KZbin helped a lot in my own beauty journey! I watch young, older women, women of different colour, ethnies etc.... One youtuber who made a real difference for me is Jenny Mustard: she completely embrace the way she looks (which is not the Hollywood type or magazine type at all) she is proud of her body and has her own style which was even more striking when she was younger! She also developed her KZbin channel to include more of her values and opinions. It is difficult to accept oneself and develop one's own beauty/style uniqueness and unfortunately I had to get older to do that!

As a very short and most likely very yin woman I can feel your frustrations with not being taller and more yang, since I have had the same yearning lol. Personal beauty is a never ending process, and that's a good thing, there's always something to discover about ourselves and a new stage in life to explore..... That said, I would love if you could do a video on Denim esthetics. I'm positive I am not the only one who lives for denim in clothes and feels incomplete or naked without some denim somewhere.....

Lovely video, as always! I totally agree with you on the essence point, how it can be challenging. I am still on the journey of discovering my true essence and one thing that has made it relatively easier is asking the people who are closest to me to give me 3 or 5 adjectives they associate with me and ask them if that matched their first impression of me. I hope this helps someone out there. Love!

Hi Elyssa! Thanks for another thoughtful video. I would love to hear your take on how Body Architecture and Color work symbiotically. It seems like most content on KZbin really separates the two. Do you think knowing your best colors/tones can help understand your body type and visa versa? I believe Bernice Kentner linked the two.
@lipasketch3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you're right! They are presented as separated subject. But I remember Aly from the Aly Art channel talking about Soft Classics looking better in soft colors. Well, I am a soft classic and I know I look better in soft/muted/delicate cool colors. So it makes me wonder if it's the case for everyone or if it's possible for there to be a soft classic whose coloring is more bright and saturated...?
@jessicavanderdysrasler81933 жыл бұрын
Yes! We are on the same page, Filipa!
@elyssa_aesthetic3 жыл бұрын
This is such a thought provoking question. And I have given it thought before. But it’s been my experience that although this can be symbiotic method it’s not always absolute. I still feel that essence has a major role to play. So, for instance, I know of some SC’s who would look and feel off in really soft looks because certain aspects of their essence call to be accommodated with more saturated colors rather than extremely soft. I think you would really enjoy David Zyla’s archetype system as it’s centered around color first (kind of).....it’s just very unique and definitely worth checking out.....I feel that it’s in alignment with your observations.

My tip is to start with figuring out your best hair & makeup looks first, looking through photos & trying out different looks to find your favorite version of yourself, THEN going through your wardrobe (try every item on & look at a full length mirror) & go shopping (again, try everything on, even things you've never imagined yourself wearing before) do the clothing part with your makeup & hair done in your favorite/most flattering everyday style. This will give you a realistic view of how the clothing will enhance or detract from your beauty.

Super inspiring and so well articulated and insightful. Thank you for sharing and for putting so much thought into these tips. When you talk about learning your body architecture in terms of yin/yang, do you think it's helpful to dissect yourself as a whole or sort of piece by piece? I find the basic Kibbe test to be a little vague and hard to define without context/comparison but maybe it's more helpful to ditch the pre-generated tests and sort of analyze things you already know about yourself?

I've been lucky, in that, I had a foundation of having a reasonable amount of appreciation for my appearance. My struggle has always been that I want to be... everything. Depending on the day, I want to be Charlize, I want to be Salma, I want to be Kate Winslet, etc... I think perhaps my body type is contradictory to my essence. Or maybe it's that my outward presentation is contrary to my body type and essence because I find it intimidating... my head hurts

Hear me out, I'm always confused about undertones because I'm heavily freckled, I get the overall vibe I'm olive and when I wear highly yellow undefined outfits I look sick. Same when I'm in some gold things. I feel like I look extremely yellow and somehow desaturated. But I have a slightly redish hair color around my face and all the time I hear from otherS to try that "natural ginger" hair color on me.... I'll try it and I guess it'll be great (but is a warm hair color) I've tried blonde for a month and I looked (again) sick. So..... I'm confused about it all
@bbappzz983 жыл бұрын
what you're describing is very similar to what audrey coyne describes and she has an olive undertone. any colour can lean cool or warm, olive undertones happen when the yellow leans cool. merriam style mentioned that she doesn't know why but warm undertones can typically get away with wearing cool and warm colours but it's the opposite for cool undertones and i find that to be true. i'm a golden undertone and yellow can be a bit tricky, i find mustard doesn't suit me but a bright sunshine yellow does, gold always looks good though. i think because mustard is much more cool so it looks weird on me but i can rock bright fuschia, blues and purples. however when i wear a warm red, orange-red or gold, it just fits.

Elyssa, I am STUCK. I can't tell if I am a flamboyant gamine or a dramatic classic. I am too yin to be a dramatic or a flam natural. I'm 5'7" with small head so pushing the gamine height. My face seems to "fit" in a lineup of gamine faces because it's not an oval. Yet, I seem to easily look as if I'm trying too hard. A little bit of anything goes a long way on me. Plain outfits, minimal jewelry seem to be very flattering on me. On the test, I can tell that about half my answers are a mix of A/B. I can't tell if the comparatively yin features are classic or yin. I've been told that I look like several flamgam actresses but also have also been described as "classic" and "understated." I'm so lost.
@mkim40913 жыл бұрын
David Kibbe no longer recommends the test. He has a FB group Srtictly Kibbe n Strictly Kibbe for beginners. He shares his knowledge and gives guidance. I suggest going from there. What better place to get advice than from the original source.
