I started mine 5 months ago and realized that after not retwisting for 7 weeks now my locks are getting really thick. I’ll leave it for another 6 weeks before retwisting. I also use virgin hair fertilizer and my hair is darker thicker and scalp is clean no build up. I’m a dude by the way 🤣🤣🤣

Also instead of retwisting after your shower, you can wrap the fly aways at the root around the dreads to encourage them to grow with the dread. This way you’re not causing tension but still keeping the locks quite neat.

I got my locs started with a loctician many years ago, and used to go for 'maintenance' every 2 weeks. After about a year, I stopped going and washed and retwisted myself. For the past 4 years, I have not retwisted, but I softly separate the roots sometimes. I found that I hated the 'neat' parts and seeing my scalp, so now I have no defined parts. My hair is thick and pretty in its semi-freeform state, and people always compliment my hair. I love it!

I think starting locs with a light retwist once a month and a biweekly wash is key. This is my second set and I think it helps it lock faster. I did this until about 8 months. After that I was golden! My hair was mostly loc, had some hang (3.5 inches) and didn’t stick out all crazy on my head.

I’ve heard it said that trying to keep roots retwisted is like trying to keep a retouch on the roots of permed hair. Always trying to keep kinky-curly hair in its natural state from being seen. Most black women are always afraid to let their true hair show and they are deathly afraid of water getting on their natural hair. STOP. Embrace what your hair looks like in its natural state. There’s nothing wrong with it. It’s beautiful. It’s funny that there is more concern with kinky-curly roots making the hair look unkempt but very little concern about dirty hair or hair that smells bad from infrequent washing or smelly grease/oil. That is the ultimate unkempt condition.
@indigoocean79064 жыл бұрын
hmm... I get your point but getting locs in itself is a huge step away from conforming to Eurocentric standards of beauty. Locs are the most natural form their is when it comes to black hair. I think it's ok to want your partings to look neat.

Thank you for that advice! I have thick hair and I don't like my hair to be frizzy that's why I twist em myself overtime and it caused it to break or get skinny to the point where I got to double strand it. I'll stop retwisting and twisting my hair when it's frizzy, wash em twice or every 3 or 4 weeks and leave em alone.

I retwist every 6 months; so, only twice a year! I just started doing this so this is my 1st time. I'm currently on my second (last) 6 months no retwist. I haven't noticed much of a difference yet! Didn't think just twisting would last. i have about 200 microlocs. I noticed the tension on my scalp after retwisting. I tried to do a full wash myself at my 5wk point and it was crazyyyyy, even after separating them (that’s how retwist 1 came about 🤣). I pretty much just cleanse the scalp now and spray the locs themselves to moisturize instead of fully submersing, cuz it’s seeming like a great way to involuntarily enter into a free form situation 🤣🤣 Not at all worried about the new growth texture issue butttttt...I def need to see what TX is gonna do about reopening these salons quick though, otherwise I’m gonna have to make a go at it 🤭

My hair hasn't been retwisted since February 7th. I have shampooed my hair 3 times because I exercise. But I haven't twisted my hair. I have all new grow though. So I have a ponytail and bang

I retwist every two months, I love the feeling of washing and leaving .. plus I love wetting my hair in the shower every time not sure if that’s healthy or not 🧐

I'm 3 weeks in and I wet mine everytime I shower as well. Tbh I see more growth this way
@saraht65584 жыл бұрын
Be careful with excessive wetting because if your hair isn’t allowed to completely dry it can potentially mold.

@@saraht6558 thanks for the tip. But I dont drench my scalp. I jus wet my fingertips and massage my scalp.

@@saraht6558 thanks i'm aware of that as well but my hair is always down so i let it complete dry

i don’t put emphasis much on retwist, i can go 2 months with out one and i go around looking ‘raw’ all the time lol. I find it works for me, but as i start doing self maintenance on my hair when i want to do retwist i’ll be able too with out having to wait

I just washed my hair and did some loose two stand twist and it feels so bomb and looks dope once you take out the two stands

Ok, so I am going to listen to you only because I cannot afford to go to my stylist for a wash and retwist and because I can't twist myself. Lol. And my hair looks like yours after washing, maybe worse. They don't look like locks anymore . The roots still looks locked but the ends look loose. It's sort of difficult to explain. It looks like my locs have been washed loosed. Literally, and my stylist and old stylist have said the same. It's weird and I have super coarse hair. I have that white stuff on my hair from when I took the ponytail out or whatever style I have at the time, looks like mold. But I never get it wet and don't sweat so I don't get it. So this will be my fist time on 3/27/2021. It's 4:49 p.m. and I about to do it. Stop me anytime now :) Lol.

💯 I retighten 3-4 times a year...not retwist or tighten after washing is beneficial
@Thisreadingcorner4 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree. I am more comfortable stretching my retwists now at 9 months because my locks are solid although frizzy.

I love your video. My only suggestion is to get and try the high puff combs. It really helps to hold the hair without the pulling on you hair and edges

I want to go longer in between retwists, however, I am concerned with my roots getting tangled. I am almost 2 months loc'd and I'm worried about how my locs will look if I wash without twisting at this stage. What's your opinion on someone in my position?
@zaharralb4 жыл бұрын
You could always separate them without retwisting
@healthfulady6094 жыл бұрын
This is my concern. I’m only 6 weeks in and I’m scared lol. I’m doing a hot oil treatment as we speak, but I’m scared to wash and not retwist
@maryonngrace56044 жыл бұрын
Hey, I think all you need is to practice separating and see how it works for you.
@neicyyy72464 жыл бұрын
That’s why after you wash you separate your locs so they don’t get matted together

Nara Reed I think been so young in your loc journey. After washing do a light retwist until your hair gets train and loc, than you can wash and not retwist so often. My opinion of course!

I’ve been getting washed and re-twist by my lactation since December but this last time I told her I’m gonna wait 30 days for the re-twist. so now I’m gonna wash it the next couple of weeks and then when I see her two weeks after that is when it’s going to get washed again and then then Re- twisted

I have a question. I'm one year locd now and I'd go 6 weeks until I wash and then retwist. I noticed my hair gets so tangled and when I do retwist I'm now pulling and snapping my hair just to find the part again. I don't care for the really neat look but it's the snapping and picking and pulling when it is time to retwist. Is it too late in the game to wait longer in between for fuller locks?
@adlenenelson96564 жыл бұрын
I remember first locking up I hated the frizzy look but honestly as your locs start to grow the frizzy look isn’t as bad it looks

your locs look like my starter locs in terms of length, thickness and head shape. watching u always makes me excited 😍 i’m 9 weeks loc’d, i don’t retwist often and when i do i use oil so it’s not a super tight hold. i want my locs to be as thick as possible
@kimmarrast51754 жыл бұрын
I can attest to the benefits of retwisting less. I'm trying it now and I can honestly say my hair looks and feels healthier. I do oil treatments and generally keep my hair tied up between retwists.
