Honestly I am a little off these luxury brands these days. I used to buy quite a bit, but it's all so mass oriented now with prices that really have gone up to an absurd level; the fun has gone for me. I don't want to stand in line for an hour to be 'lucky' to go in. Luxury really has lost it's luster and has become the object of greedy shareholders.

Fully agree. We took a trip to Japan recently which cost maybe a bit less than 2 bags and I wouldn't trade it for the world. I think during the pandemic there was a time when all we could do was shop and I went crazy, now it's not as nearly as interesting. Also helps that brands are not making anything groundbreaking.

Agreed Sophie! Ridiculously expensive prices to the point of greed, poor quality and boring designs are why I checked out of any new products from luxury brands. I still have bags in amazing condition from the late 90's and early 2000's. All Gucci and Fendi. My vintage Chanel bag ( auth card has date of 89-91) is built like a tank lol. It will last forever! I use them all everday. Luxury brands are so creatively bankrupt that they keep doing bag reissues like the Prada nylon and Dior Saddle bag. Rather buy an original version. And excellent point, I love what I already have and these days, I'm shopping my own closet. 😎

Preach It!!!!! TRAVEL AND EXPERIENCES #1!!! This has been my thinking for decades. I traded travel for handbags during the pandemic. Back to traveling now!!! The luxury world pricing does not seem to understand that their competition is travel and retirement savings not mortgage and utilities. Also, my safety is MOST important; luxury companies are exposing us to danger because of their new and pre-loved prices. Approximately (not on sale) $300 to $2,000 luxury handbags and especially local Italian bags have great craftsmanship and great leather without the high prices endangering our lives and competing with travel cost. Love that you’re honest about maybe purchasing in the future. Love your for you being you and being a great person. Seeing the world and experience life, Priceless ❤❤❤

Hi Sophie, I think this is my first time commenting! I haven't bought a bag from a high-end brand since about 2019! In 2020 - 2021, I didn't really see a point in buying and I wasn't spending enough time outside to justify adding another expensive bag to my collection. Like you, I have been putting things into perspective and thinking about what else I can do with my money i.e visiting new countries. I also have thought about the amount I have spent on bags and compared it to the costs of my holidays. Recently I went to on a 6-day city break in Europe and flights and accom cost about £300! I find that going on holiday and having enriching experiences like these are a better way to spend my money. Regarding bags, I still have a wish-list and my number 1 bag retails for £1200, but I don't think it will give me the same satisfaction as visiting other countries. Also, the bag I reach for the most these days is my £14.99 Uni Qlo bag so I *cannot* justify spending £1.2k on a bag I'll probably 2-3 times a year. Living in London, I am especially wary of the thieves and being targeted so I do prefer to keep it lowkey a lot of the time.

People rave about it because it's beautiful but also because it's original and not so easily available in the US. So in a way it's an Hermes / Chanel in the states due to its not immediate and low availability - the very thing said brands do to make their bags more desirable. The scarcity factor always works.

Hi Sophie, I'm writing to you from NYC. I flew here two days ago for some medical appointments. I love in Georgia (USA). In between appointments, I did some window shopping on/around Madison Avenue where all the very high end shops are: Hermes, Brunello Cuccinelli, Chanel, etc. NO ONE was in those shops (and during the Christmas holidays!) The staff looked so bored. Staff members were either sitting in chairs and on their phones or just staring off into space. I did pop into Hermes and it was full of people, but very few were actually trying on things. The rest seemed to be there just to look. There was a lot of commotion, like a typical old school department store. It didn't feel elevated to be there - more like a circus. Something is amiss for sure , but of course, retailers are not going to disclose that they are hurting for sales.

Thank you so much for this very interesting video ❤ What I read several times in "serious" newspapers / articles was that luxury brands actually made more money during covid than ever before - mainly because people did not travel and had more money for other forms of "escapism". I also read that this year, Hermes is the ONLY fashion house that made more money than the previous years - all the others are selling less! The numerous price increases, the fear of theft and the quality issues are the reasons I hear the most often. Take care 💕

I think that luxury is for the people with too much money, not for the average or even higher middle class. None of those bags are really worth that money, they are just a status simbol, nothing more. Of course, those bags can be beautifully designed, but you can always find a great quality dupes, if you want. I have to admit that I love bags and shoes too much, but I always buy good quality no name or dupes because I love to spend my money on travelling the world, trying nice food and wine, buying a nice vintage art...I do not need to justify myself by walking arround with the 5 to 20 thousend pound bags. They are simply not worth it.

Interesting video and thoughtful reasons to pause adding more luxury bags. I truly haven’t worn my Chanel bags in a year and have some guilt and plan to take out over the holiday season to some special theater performances and dinners. I always love having them on those occasions. I am in Chicago, IL and our neighborhood has become a refuge for migrants from Venezuela. I am face to face with more poverty and homelessness than ever before and in light of it I feel more comfort carrying a lululemon bum bag , a coach heart bag I recently added in or a plain Jane canvas tote. It’s not so much a fear of theft but a desire to not flaunt wealth to others especially those who are in such need. I think luxury can become a way to mask our own desire to be seen as successful and lately I maybe have wanted my bag to blend in and not be a source of attention. Stay well and stay safe

on my first trip to Paris I also got myself a “mid range” bag and I put the put the apostrophes because my Zadig bag I got is still quite expensive, especially that most of my bags are in the 200 dollars mark at most so a Zadig moon rock was a luxury for me and I’m really happy with that bag. I don’t know why Zadig is not popular in social media but it’s a pretty nice brand, it’s more an equivalent to Saint Laurent asthetic than the classic luxury brands but I love it. You picked something more sophisticated elegant I want something more glamorous rock. Nice choice with Pólene, I might go with that one if I go back to Paris. Zadig is more cool is more in the lines of Saint Laurent Jackemous and Balenciaga than Celine, LV or Goyard. Polene is more sophisticated and classic more heritage.

I’ve definitely slowed down, since last year actually. Not much to do with the economy because relatively speaking, my country has been fairly insulated from the inflation in everyday goods that the rest of the world has been experiencing. I have been spending on travel and wine though. Recently, due to my trip to Italy last month, i’ve also somehow fallen in love with Loro Piana (probably have been influenced by all the quiet luxury going on, and by the fact that a wedding I attended had the same venue as a scene from Succession), i’m now scrambling to buy a vicuna sweater, which is somehow harder to find than expected😂 but actually seriously under the radar quality materials and items that will send me to cloud nine with its luxurious softness is what I am after. Of course, getting travel in and buying it duty free will also be a priority.

I got a medium Lady Dior in Ultramatte Blush for about $5,200 USD in China back in 2020. I’m happy with my purchase because they brought it back in stock, and I like to have more timeless pieces. Because of this video, I’ve found out that it’s now going for $6,500 in the US (where taxes are lower than in China)!

They raised the prices to a point that makes no sense for what the stuff actually is and what you're getting. With 5k can you imagine all the other fun things you could buy, as you said. I agree with you, unless it's just a one special bag, I would just rather spend more on other things. I didn't mind "wasting" some money on some purses I may not wear too much but now it's like.. mmm no I can go have way more fun with that money because they doubled it all. I've switched to horses and jewelry, I find I get more for what I am paying. Experience and value for what it costs.

Hi Sophie thank you for your video , I totally get your point.. I m 40 , I have build a nice bags collection over the years … Nowadays I can t justify those new prices , I have kids that go to a private school .. So education , trips abroad ( experiences ) are more important to me .. I just got last summer a small lime bag in nylon from Fendi for 1300 euros the cutest thing ever ! Perfect for the season , got so many compliments.. And what I notice with those small seasonal bags I ve been getting from Alaia , Fendi , Prada I don t see them a lot ! I do have double flaps and one Kelly .. I see those bags everywhere ( fake or real one are everywhere ! ) .. So I do stand out for less money which I appreciate ! 💜

I think you’re so right Sophie. I would expect my typical trip of a 4* hotel & flying in economy (but with a nice airline) costs about the same as some of these luxury bags but it’s crazy think 5* & flying business would match. You’ve bags coming out of your ears, so I think definitely invest the money that would’ve been spent into travel & yet still buy those ones that excite you. After Covid we learned not to take travel for granted. You should book Singapore & may I suggest Japan if possible too (I’m trying to nude my mom to go there, I’ve been in 2016…so I’ve researched to death if you’ve any Qs) or maybe Australia. You mentioned you’d like to see there

Completely agree. I’ve had to have one bag repaired….another just started to disintegrate. Both within the same year…from two different luxury houses. I think I may have used each bag perhaps 8 to 10 times each as I try to rotate them. Completely unacceptable. Anniversary trip to Europe next year. So grateful for what I have but it’s so discouraging. The prices, fear of being targeted, and quality issues 😮. Thanks for the video.

Yes, security is a thing. I never travel with my Chanel bag neither LV. I would also not buy expensive suitcase ( like Rimowa ), because it draws attention and you are targeted easily ( especially in Italy ). Folded Longchamp is a way to go for me ( mine is almost 10 years old ).

Absolutely agree! I personally buy way less such items, and invest more in technology and devices/machines for production. I also think it’s good that this is basically a “side hustle” for you, besides your actual business! This way you can distance yourself, while full time content creators are going more and more in debt, trying to keep up the haul videos! Best wishes

Gosh the pandemic really altered my spending behavior so much. I have actually gone from wearing Chanel, LV and Dior to brands with low label visibility like Bottega Veneta, Coach, Mansur Gavriel, Staud and Cult Gaia. I also lost interest after the massive price increases. I got my classics and I'm not buying luxury trend bags anymore.

Sophie, you’re spot on. I’ve slowed down buying bags, I haven’t bought a Chanel bag all year and I didn’t even realize 😊. I’ve bought SLG’s, Beanie’s etc., but no bags. The chronic price increases with these brands are disgusting and not to mention subpar quality. We are going on our second European family vacation for the year, far outweighs a leather bag at these prices and this is what we’ll be doing more of. Glad you had a great Italian holiday ❤

I have really slowed down on purchasing from designer brands. I got a YSL clutch for my birthday and also a diamond half eternity band. I love the bag but I almost wish that I had my husband spend that extra money towards a slightly better ring and or another piece of jewelry that I was looking at. But I still love the bag. I think I'm done buying luxury pieces until they slow down on raising prices. For the most part I am content with my designer bag collection. Although I would love to get a medium sized bag into my collection. I have either decent sized bags or small bags/clutches. It would be nice to have something in between. For now though we are planning on saving for a big trip next summer and also we are in the middle of renovation plans for our kitchen. More important things.

Value is only what someone else is willing to pay for something; be it a bag or a house. So, as long as someone is willing to pay the asking price, that is considered its value. Should an item run out of buyers at the asking price however, that value begins to decrease until it is at a price that someone will pay. I think as quality decreases across the "luxury" (or not so luxury anymore) sector, people willing to pay exorbitant prices may dwindle and we may see a growth stall in the market. The Covid period has perpetuated an artificial inflation of this sector which is unsustainable as both service and product quality decline. It will certainly be interesting to observe over the coming months and years, but I am also allocating funds towards experiences now as opposed to bags and other luxury accompaniments to life . Thanks for the video Sophie, your ideas are always so on point and excellent conversation starters!

Thank you so much, Sophie, for your honest and insightful video. I don't often comment, but tonight I felt like I wanted to affirm what you have shared. It's all about, "opportunity costs," as far as how I want to use my disposable income, i.e. on vacations, home decor, charities, or my passion for fashion--especially handbags. Though I can't take any extended vacations at this time (due to an aged furry child who I don't want to leave at home), there is the most beautiful Lady Dior that I love so much. However, it costs $10,000!! 😱 As much as I love it, for numerous sentimental reasons, I just cannot justify spending that kind of money. Thank you for helping to confirm my decision to pass on this particular handbag, which is truly a work of art, but not at the current price tag. Take care and God bless you and David!🩷

I'm trying to get rid of things in general and decided not to buy my first bag yet. I kind of want to shop with the wife. My style is changing as well. I've just turned 38 and I want different clothes than I have. I'd like to focus on getting my look down then get a nice bag that we can share together and that I wouldn't mind gifting my kiddo later (she's already 10 years old and will want some nice things soon I reckon). I still have to move countries so I will just enjoy your vlogs and my other faves' collections until I can realistically get my first bag. Probably preloved tbh. Might be fun to shop in person for that at a market or something. I'm a bit curious what's on offer in Austria and looking forward to sharing closets with my spouse. That'll be good fun. ❤

This video was so useful💗. I definitely agree with the price rises, I’m mid 20’s and looking at my lux wishlist and actually taking items off because the prices are just going up when instead I can go on trips abroad like you say here. I definitely been looking at pre loved markets for those items ie Chanel and Dior as I would love a Chanel 19. Think it’s all down to Covid but I believe people are less buying lux items because there so much sadly and cost of living crisis.

Im also in the same stage with you, Sophie! I feel like there are something more valuable out there, such as building my business, education, traveling and experience! I'm also felt the same for buying luxury bag in the moment and it probably stay like this now, and also felt I already have "the bag" and dent want anything unless the quality and design is worthy. For me, I also think I kind of graduate from Dior but recently very into Burberry for the quality, quilt luxury feel, and the price as well! Nowadays. I felt if I wanted to buy anything that is for that kind of money but in luxury world, I would rather buying watch such as the timeless design of Tank Louis from Cartier or their jewellery. Daks or other classic brand's blazers or coats and some ice quality dress shoes or loafers that can be wear for many year but never go out of the stye.

I'm sticking with Aspinal of London and Strathberry for my dream bags. Luxury leather without the higher price tag and without the poor quality. I'm waiting for Aspinal to come out with the Madison tote in a beautiful blue color again.

Love your chitchat sessions. Agree with you on everything. Yay for Prada - it’s my first luxury bag and so I’ll always have a soft spot for this brand. I’m stopping with the bags and focusing more on affordable luxury RTW (especially past seasons/discounted) as I want to build a capsule wardrobe out of quality pieces.

Sophie, i COMPLETELY agree with you. Once you buy a few of these bags... spending that kind of money is beyond stressful and makes me, personally, think what is wrong with me to spend that kind of money on a handbag. Because at the end of the day, it's still a bag. I will say my two Bvlgari serpenti bags and my ysl sunset medium were worth the money for me. Esp the Bvlgari because that looks and feels substantial. I've slowed down massive. I have a good collection, but I've stopped purchasing luxury bags specifically. My dream bag is a very rare version of a chanel 19 but that bag is 7-8k!!! I just can't.... i could take my family on vacation for a long while for that money. An experience that you can't put a price on.

I have to pause to remember to comment on this. 😁 I totally agree with you Sophie about comparing buying a bag or to something that you can only experience once in your life. Once I have what I wanted for bags I felt the same. Looking and watching people unbox is just enough for me to enjoy luxury bags. I love them but I don’t feel like buying them. You know what I mean. And most especially my kids are growing so fast, me and my husband really enjoyed traveling with them. So worth spending.

I agree. I buy designer bags infrequently; maybe one every two years. I bought my first designer bag over a decade ago, took a break for a few years, and then bought my second bag maybe 5 years ago, my third two years later, and so on.. My closet isn't full. I've been hearing about and seeing all of the issues that you talked about in recent years, so my motivation to "collect" really isn't there. Maybe it would have been if I bought more when I first started. Anyway, I'm looking to add a few more classic pieces, a few small leather goods, and after that I'll be done. I'll always enjoy luxury and shopping, but I also love experiences and traveling. For me, personally, life is best lived with as much balance as possible :)

Thank you for making this video. It is very true for all you have mentioned. I have stopped buying brand new. I look for prelove because it is more value for the money. The price inceease does not justify the quality. I have used my money for holidays with family, great meals with family and giving back to the community. If I find something worth the money I will buy it. In this fragile times, I feel spending time with loves ones, family, experience is more important.
