I take zinc between meals for better absorption. Taking it away from calcium (in foods or supplements) is also important, calcium and zinc are antagonists. Those who eat a lot of calcium may have low zinc levels. It is also good to take magnesium a few hours away from zinc. It's true that vegetarians/vegans (I am one) can have problems with zinc, we eat a lot of phytates which interfere with zinc absorption (oats contain a lot of phytate) Since I increased my zinc supplementation I have seen many positive results, first I was on 5/12 mg per day, now on 12/25 mg per day (only part of them will be absorbed) I don't integrate copper but in my diet there are always sunflower, pumpkin, flax and chia seeds that contain copper. A person who eats meat and/or does not eat many phytate-containing foods will need a much smaller dose.

Thanks for your videos, great and informative content. I just started taking a timed release zinc supplement, 50 mg. Do you think this could lead to problems with overdose? I also take a multivitamin which I believe would also contain zinc. Thanks.

50mg zinc isn't fully elemental zinc. Which means your body won't fully absorb it, only around 20 - 30% depending on the type of zinc. So you would only probably absorb 10 - 15mg of zinc from 50mg zinc.

My PCP in USA from Penn med generally doesn't recommend me taking supplements. I've got a habit upgrading myself with different ones. I decided taking each pill of supplements every other or even every 3-4rd day same pill. Zinc one of it. In my opinion if it doesn't work at least with such a protocol also doesn't hurt me.

I've heard it's best to have about an 8:1 ratio between zinc and copper. But, there's no consensus of whether taking a supplement that combines both is best, or, separating the minerals by 2 hours. Assuming we're not getting enough by diet, any recommendation on supplementing?

Zinc is highly advised to take in a balanced mineral formula. Zinc should not be taken alone on a regular basis . Zinc taken regularly will lower and impair Copper metabolism which then leads to Iron Overload or Disregulation which is very serious.

I wouldn’t see this an issue provided you’re getting these other minerals from your diet. But yes I definitely see your point

Too much zinc "alone" didn't cause iron overload for me but iron deficiency (that was when i took 100mg of elemental zinc for months). Maybe you did like i did and also took a few 1000iu of vitamin d3 each day? or lots ascorbic acid?. Vitamin d3 lowers ceruloplasmin (wich is needed for copper metabolism) and increases zinc and iron absorpion, pair that with lowered ceruloplasmin and you will have iron overload for sure. Yeah you can then take copper supplement and yeah you will feel better but that is only temporary and after a long while you will get copper toxic and feel worse then you ever was before. Just lower the freaking zinc intake instead of loading up on copper. I had zinc toxicity and iron overload when i started 3000iu of vitamin d3 but my copper levels was still perfect mid range. So the high zinc ( i dropped to 50mg after the iron deficiency) inhibited the copper function but still did not cause a copper deficiency. So loading up on copper (wich will not be utilized because of the high zinc and lowered ceruloplasmin in that case) you ask for serious trouble long run.. I took 50mg of zinc each day for over 7 years and never had issues untill i had a vitamin d deficiency and i needed to supplement. Than i got all those symptoms like shortness of breath, looking pale, cold hand and feet, muscle weakness, extreme fatigue, blurry vision, nausea etc wich i thought was iron deficiency again (wich is similar to copper deficiency) But my blood revealed iron overload and zinc toxicity.. Copper was perfect..

@@RickAstleyLetMeDown supplements are not necessary unless we have a deficiency or advised for whatever reason by a medical professional. I do not believe anyone who states they took Zinc every day for several years and there Copper was normal, because this us not possible...I would only believe these claims were sufficient evidence was provided...
