You should do a video on pro-stock vs. retail gear: skates, sticks, jerseys, etc...

the difference between pro stock sticks and retail are for sticks pro players can choose custom curves they want different material in the blade and the shafts custom flex as well skates same thing they can choose different tongues different blades and holders

Oh I know. But given that it's accessible for people to buy pro stock online (prostockhockey.com, etc...), as well as things like jersey quality, I thought it might be interested for those that aren't in the know. Some may wonder whether it's worth it to invest in discounted pro stock. Just a more fleshed out breakdown of pro options vs. retail in a video.

For some items its perfectly fine to buy pro stock gear, and definitely can be a great value, mainly for things like gloves, helmets, pants..sticks and skates can be a bit iffy - one of the main reasons is what youd call "dressing" - which means you may find lets say a Bauer Vapor 1X stick, but its actually a Vapor X60 "dressed" with 1X graphics, and you actually end up with a stick thats nearly 5 years old but with the current flagship product graphics because of marketing and sales - most pro players youll notice in locker rooms dont always wear or use the most current gear, youll see players still wearing shoulder pads and elbow pads from 10 years ago that arent even made anymore, and other items that are "broken in" or "lucky" that they wont bear to stop using (Crosby still uses the same jock strap from when he was a teenager and has his equipment manager keep repairing it, theres a video out there somewhere on it) - theres lots of info on prostock stick codes to tell what actually is the model online in forums. Skates can be the same way, youll find plenty of listings for Bauer Nexus skates with a Vapor X-Rib mold pattern in them and so youre thinking youre getting a certain product but you end up with something that isnt the same as the retail version description..the nexus being a very wide fit normally but the specific prostock was built with a narrow vapor fit and dressed with nexus graphics on the outside of the skate and they end up not fitting you like they normally would in a store. Jerseys are an awesome example of the difference between 'retail/replica' and 'authentic/prostock' - ive got 2 different Reebok Edge practice jerseys - one bought from a store retail and one bought off ebay that was a game used training camp authentic and the difference is interesting how much more goes into prostock. I should probably do a video on it some time lol. But anyways, some products are safer than others, ive got some friends that will only buy prostock stuff and swear by it, but its up to you really I guess.

Tyler Dowd google "pro stock stick codes" and youll find plenty of forums and sites that discuss the breakdowns of each brand's codes and what the stick actually is manufactured as

Hey Chris, I think you should also mention the fact that any major hockey store with a pro shop or a store that specializes in skates will also modify off the shelf skates. For example I have a wide food and I bought a pair of Bauer N9000. I needed them a little wider and the good people at Pro Hockey Life were able to widen them as well as “punch” them out in certain parts of the skate where I needed more room. This was done with a special press that stretches the skate after they come out of the oven. The guy at PHL also told me that they can easily do this with more expensive skates because the have a higher quality of material compared to a lower costing skate. So it’s kind of like getting a custom fit skate from something off the shelf.

I lucked out when I got my CCM skates. But I'm a goalie and I need a very different skate than a regular player would use. I'd love to see a video on goalie skates and how to get a good fit. I've been retired from hockey for a while now but I still enjoy a drop in once in a while. I swear by CCM and I still have my old skates. (they are still serving me very well) Looking forward to more videos.

Very helpful, have a 12.5 A width foot, just skate once a week for fun, and fitness. Age 61, I watched Lou Lamoriello coach at Providence. Bought a $400 pair of skates 5 years ago, awful, too wide, pinched my toes, put three inserts in to fill space. Bought a pair of CCM 44k Ribcore size 10, better but still fell movement in right skate. Any thoughts? Many thanks, Ken

You should have noted that goalie skate lines are not the same fits. Supreme goalie ~vapor fit (I fit vapor goal skates) but can't say the same for ccm skate line . I'm trying to play out and I bought the wrong skate fit (used). Most stores don't give a direct answer to the skates unless they specialize in goalie gear too.

@BenP25

Definitely interested in a video on your thoughts of a custom skate vs an off the shelf skate being baked and having problem areas punched out. I've always had some trouble finding skates that I *really* feel comfortable in because of bony bits of my feet which stick out a little bit. I find when I pull my skates nice and tight I get far better performance (as you'd expect) however the sides of my skates really press against the bony bits and it is extremely uncomfortable to skate in and when the skates are taken off can be painful as my foot readjusts to not be squeezed any more. This makes me sometimes not tie them up so tight so I get a bit of comfort, but my power is seriously impacted and my feet wobble in the skate a little bit, sometimes causing me to do a comedy slip up 🙄 I'd be interested in a video which might explain if a custom skate would benefit me or if other options might be available.

I used to skate with figure skating shoe but this week I bought a pair of bauer s180. I took them out on the ice today and the first thing i noticed when i skate faster on the ice i hear a terrible crackling noise that i never heard of when i figure skate. It also felt like I was going over a bunch of tiny bumps on the ice. I had them sharpened at the store. What exactly could the problem be? any advice helps.

Most online stores accept online returns or returns to stores if they have a brick and mortar store. Being in Columbus, we have only 1 hockey store other than the standard sporting stores. Shocking with an NHL team, honestly to me. I'm looking to get into playing hockey but the store prices are well over the budget that I have in mind. Looking at staying under $70 I've found the CCM Super Tacks and CCM Jetspeed. But after watching this video I think it eliminated the Jetspeed because I do have a wider ball of the foot area. Any thoughts if you still come to this video??
